To mirror a website, use a crawler to download a chosen set of pages and linked files into a local directory, then check the copy offline. HTTrack is a practical starting point because it has both a guided interface and command-line options; GNU Wget is a command-line alternative. Neither guarantees a complete copy of dynamic or interactive features, so define a narrow scope and verify what matters.
What mirroring a website does—and does not do
A website mirror is a local collection of downloaded pages and files arranged to preserve some of the site’s browsing structure. A crawler follows links within a chosen scope, saves pages and assets, and may rewrite links so you can open the copy offline. HTTrack documents this local, link-preserving workflow in its manual.
A mirror is not necessarily a complete or current replica. Pages may depend on JavaScript, user interaction, an account, or services that are unavailable offline. Treat it as a useful archive or migration starting point, not proof that every live-site behavior and asset has been captured.
Before you start: permission, scope, and storage
Confirm that copying is allowed
Check the site’s terms and get authorization where needed before mirroring it. HTTrack’s FAQ advises asking permission. GNU Wget’s overview says it respects robots.txt, but a crawler’s behavior does not settle whether copying or redistribution is permitted. Do not use a mirror to bypass access controls. Legal rules depend on jurisdiction and context.

Choose a bounded scope
Decide whether you need a single section, a set of pages, or a broader site copy. Begin at the relevant page or directory and avoid crawling unrelated areas. HTTrack exposes scope, filters, and limits through its options; its command-line guide describes them.
Pick a destination with room to grow
Choose a local directory with enough free space for the site’s pages and assets. Required capacity depends on the site, and a crawler may encounter many linked files. An external drive can be useful for a large archive, but it is optional; there is no universal storage amount that fits every mirror.
How to mirror a website with HTTrack
HTTrack offers a guided interface as well as command-line controls. For a first mirror, use its guided workflow, specify the starting URL and destination, and keep the capture bounded to what you are authorized to copy. Exact labels and available options can differ by platform and version; consult the project’s documentation for the interface or command-line option details.
- Install and open HTTrack. Get it from the project and choose the guided interface if you prefer not to build a command by hand.
- Create a project and set its destination. Use a clear project name and a local directory with sufficient free space. Keep the mirror separate from unrelated files.
- Enter the starting address. Start with the site or section you intend to copy, not an unrelated top-level address. Apply scope and filtering options so the crawl stays within your purpose.
- Run the crawl. Let the tool download pages and linked resources. A large site can take time and storage; do not assume that a successful run means every page was captured.
- Open the local entry page. Use a browser to open the saved start page from the destination directory, then click through internal links while offline.
- Inspect key pages and assets. Check representative pages, images, stylesheets, and documents. Note any missing content or links that do not work locally.
HTTrack documents the ability to resume interrupted work and update an existing mirror. If you use either capability, check the resulting copy again: the source site and crawler behavior can change between runs.

Using GNU Wget from a terminal
GNU Wget is a command-line utility that supports recursive downloads and link conversion for offline viewing. Its official 1.25.0 manual overview describes these capabilities and says Wget respects the Robot Exclusion Standard (robots.txt). Command options and behavior can vary with the installed version; check the manual for the version on your system before running a crawl.
Wget’s recursive and conversion options can be combined to download linked material and make links suitable for offline browsing. Because the exact command depends on the scope and limits you need, consult the official manual rather than running an unbounded recursive download copied from an unrelated use case. Set a destination deliberately and test the result locally.
HTTrack or Wget: choosing the approach
| Need | HTTrack | GNU Wget |
|---|---|---|
| Interface | Guided interface and command-line utility, per the HTTrack documentation. | Command-line utility, per the GNU Wget manual. |
| Offline browsing | Downloads site files into a local structure and supports link-preserving offline browsing, per the manual. | Supports recursive download and link conversion for offline viewing, per the manual. |
| Resume or refresh | The manual documents continuing interrupted work and updating an existing mirror. | Not stated in the cited overview. |
| Robots.txt | The command-line guide discusses robots.txt behavior; consult the current guide for applicable options. | The overview says Wget respects robots.txt. |
| JavaScript execution | The command-line guide states HTTrack does not run JavaScript. | Not stated in the cited overview. |
The cited documentation does not provide a controlled head-to-head speed or completeness benchmark. Choose based on interface, scope controls, offline link needs, and your comfort with the command line—not on an unsupported claim that one is universally faster or more complete.
What a crawler may miss
Pages and URLs created by JavaScript
HTTrack’s command-line guide states that it does not execute JavaScript. If a page creates links at runtime, a crawler that does not run that code may never discover those URLs. Client-side rendered sections and interactive features also require manual checking; downloading the initial HTML is not the same as reproducing the live application.

Login-protected or interactive content
Do not assume a crawl will include content that requires signing in, completing a challenge, or interacting with a page. The documentation does not establish that every such case can be captured. Verify authorized access and inspect the saved result rather than treating the crawl as complete.
External services and changing content
A saved page can refer to resources hosted elsewhere or rely on services that continue to change. Offline inspection helps reveal broken links and missing assets, but it cannot make a live dependency local if it was not downloaded.
Verify, update, and troubleshoot your mirror
Local links open the wrong page or fail
Check that the crawler included the linked page and that link conversion or rewriting was enabled as intended. Open the saved entry page from the mirror directory, then test internal links—not just the original live URL.
Images or styles are missing
Inspect whether those files were within your crawl scope and whether they were hosted on another domain. Review filters and allowed scope, then rerun only if permitted and necessary. Do not broaden the crawl without considering storage and site rules.

Important content is absent
Consider whether the page builds its content with JavaScript or requires a login or interaction. HTTrack does not run JavaScript according to its command-line guide. Record such gaps and preserve important material through an authorized method that actually exposes it.
The crawl stops early or takes too much space
Confirm the destination has free capacity, tighten the scope, and consult the tool’s documentation for limits and recovery options. HTTrack documents resume support for interrupted work. A portable external SSD may help if local capacity is the constraint, but actual needs depend on the site.
The source has changed since the mirror was made
HTTrack’s manual documents an update mode for an existing mirror. Treat an update as a new crawl, not a guarantee of a synchronized archive; revisit important pages and assets after refreshing.

FAQ
Can I mirror any website?
Technical access does not establish permission. Check the site’s terms, applicable rules, and authorization before copying.
Will the local copy work exactly like the original?
No crawler is established here as capturing every dynamic, interactive, or login-dependent feature. Test the pages and assets you need while offline.
Can I use a website screenshot as a mirror?
No. A screenshot is an image or PDF capture, not a linked local collection of pages and files.
