To minify CSS and JavaScript in WordPress, enable minification in one optimization plugin—such as Autoptimize or WP Rocket—or use Cloudflare’s edge minification if your site is proxied through Cloudflare. Minification removes unnecessary characters such as whitespace and comments, reducing asset size without changing the intended code. It is separate from combining files, compression, and script deferral, so enable only the features your site needs and test important pages after each change.
What CSS and JavaScript minification does
A minifier rewrites text-based assets by removing formatting characters and comments that browsers do not need. The resulting stylesheet or script contains the same functional code in a smaller file. WP Rocket describes CSS minification as removing whitespace and comments to reduce stylesheet size (CSS documentation); its JavaScript guidance makes the same distinction for scripts (JavaScript documentation).
Minification does not reduce the number of JavaScript or CSS requests. It also does not automatically defer scripts, remove unused rules, or guarantee a particular PageSpeed score. The result depends on your files, cache, server, delivery protocol, and other optimizations already in place.
Choose one minification route
| Route | Best fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Autoptimize | Owners who want a WordPress plugin focused on asset optimization | Its WordPress.org listing documents CSS and JavaScript optimization and warns against running overlapping minification features in another plugin or page-cache tool (Autoptimize). |
| WP Rocket | Sites already using, or evaluating, WP Rocket’s broader caching features | Separate CSS and JavaScript minification controls, file exclusions, and combination options are documented in its optimization settings (CSS, JavaScript). |
| Cloudflare Speed | Sites already using Cloudflare as their proxy or CDN | Cloudflare documents automatic minification and compression for HTML, CSS, and JavaScript at the edge. Confirm that the feature is available in your current account and service configuration (Cloudflare web assets). |
There is no universally fastest plugin. Select the layer that already owns your caching and delivery, then keep minification in that layer rather than enabling the same operation repeatedly.
Before enabling anything
- Check your host, CDN, and existing performance plugins for active CSS or JavaScript minification.
- Record which plugin or service currently creates page caches and how to purge them.
- Make a recent backup and note a few representative URLs: the homepage, a page with forms, a shop or cart page if applicable, and a page with menus, sliders, or other JavaScript interactions.
- Use a staging site when your site is business-critical or has complex plugins and themes.
Method 1: Minify with a WordPress plugin
Autoptimize
- Install and activate Autoptimize from Plugins → Add New.
- Open Settings → Autoptimize.
- In the JavaScript options, enable the setting that optimizes or minifies JavaScript. In the CSS options, enable the setting that optimizes or minifies CSS.
- Save the changes, purge any page or CDN cache, and test the representative URLs.
Autoptimize’s available labels and advanced controls can change between releases. Leave aggregation, inline delivery, and other advanced options off until basic minification is confirmed. Its documentation cautions against simultaneous, overlapping minification in another plugin or page-cache feature.
WP Rocket
- Open Settings → WP Rocket → File Optimization.
- Under CSS Files, select Minify CSS files.
- Under JavaScript Files, select Minify JavaScript files.
- Save changes and clear WP Rocket’s cache; also purge any separate host or CDN cache.
WP Rocket applies optimized assets to cached or optimized pages. Its documentation also describes product-specific exclusions, including already-minified files and files or tags marked not to minify. If a theme or plugin supplies an exclusion control, use that control instead of editing generated files manually.

Method 2: Minify at Cloudflare’s edge
- Sign in to Cloudflare and select the relevant website.
- Open the current Speed or web-asset optimization settings shown for your account.
- Enable automatic minification for CSS and JavaScript (and HTML if you want Cloudflare to process it).
- Save, purge the appropriate Cloudflare cache, and check the same page types from a fresh browser session.
Cloudflare lists minification separately from Brotli and Gzip compression. Edge processing can be convenient when Cloudflare already serves your site, but do not also enable an identical minifier in WordPress unless you have deliberately configured one layer to exclude those assets.
Minification versus combining and compression
Combining files
Combining joins multiple CSS or JavaScript files into fewer files. That can reduce requests, but it can also alter load order, dependencies, or cache behavior. WP Rocket notes that combining JavaScript is not necessarily best practice on HTTP/2 and is disabled automatically when its Delay JavaScript Execution feature is active (WP Rocket’s JavaScript guidance). Treat combining as an optional, site-specific experiment—not a requirement for minification.

Compression
Compression encodes the response for transfer; minification changes the source text itself. Cloudflare documents Brotli and Gzip compression as separate optimizations from minification (Cloudflare web-asset optimization). A site can use both, provided only one layer is responsible for each setting.
How to test safely after minifying
- Open the homepage and key templates in a private window while logged out.
- Test navigation menus, search, forms, cookie dialogs, sliders, accordions, modals, checkout, login, and any page-specific widgets.
- Check desktop and mobile layouts for missing styles, unformatted content, or flashes of incorrect styling.
- Inspect the browser console for JavaScript errors and the Network panel for failed or blocked CSS and JS requests.
- Run your usual performance audit only after caches are warm, and compare the same URL and test conditions. Treat any score change as site-specific rather than a guaranteed result.
What to do if something breaks
Layout becomes unstyled or partially styled
Turn off the last CSS optimization change, purge every relevant cache, and retest. If the problem disappears, re-enable minification and add the affected stylesheet to the selected tool’s CSS exclusion list.

A menu, form, or widget stops working
Disable the last JavaScript optimization or exclude the script that controls the feature. Check dependency order before trying combination or execution-delay settings; minification alone should not be assumed to require combining.
Changes do not appear
Purge the WordPress plugin cache, host cache, CDN or Cloudflare cache, and your browser cache as applicable. View the page source or Network panel to confirm whether the browser receives the optimized asset.

Two tools report that files are already optimized
Choose one owner for minification. WP Rocket documents compatibility with Autoptimize when duplicate functions are disabled and says it can detect matching Autoptimize options (Using Autoptimize with WP Rocket).
Expected results and sensible scope
Minification reduces the bytes in eligible CSS and JavaScript responses, but the amount varies by the original files and by whether caching, compression, HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 delivery, and other optimizations are already active. The cited documentation does not establish a fixed percentage reduction or guaranteed load-time or score improvement for an individual WordPress site. Measure your own key pages, keep the setting only if the site remains correct, and expand to combining or other advanced options only when a specific bottleneck justifies the added compatibility risk.
