Veeam Backup & Replication can move a VMware vSphere VM to Microsoft Hyper-V through Instant Recovery to Microsoft Hyper-V. The process is not an in-place VMDK conversion. Veeam first starts a temporary Hyper-V VM directly from the backup repository, then copies its data to production Hyper-V storage with Migrate to production.

That distinction matters: the recovered VM becomes available quickly, but it has limited disk performance until the storage migration is complete.

How the VMware-to-Hyper-V migration works

The workflow has three phases:

  1. Back up the VMware VM. Veeam needs at least one successfully created restore point.
  2. Run Instant Recovery to Hyper-V. Veeam registers a temporary Hyper-V VM whose disks are read from compressed and deduplicated backup files.
  3. Migrate to production. Veeam copies the recovered disks to the final Hyper-V storage and progressively switches reads to the new disks.

Instant Recovery is therefore best understood as migration by backup and recovery, rather than direct conversion. Do not treat a successfully booted temporary VM as the finished migration.

Check support before starting

Veeam’s platform pages list Windows Server Hyper-V 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2025, Microsoft Hyper-V Server, Azure Stack HCI/Azure Local, and limited Instant Recovery targets based on Windows 10 and Windows 11. The VMware support page lists vSphere 7.x, 8.x and 9.0, with limitations and lifecycle considerations for vSphere 7.x.

Check the Hyper-V platform support matrix and VMware vSphere support matrix for the exact Veeam build, guest operating system, storage configuration and virtual hardware. The documentation baseline referenced for this procedure is Veeam Backup & Replication 13.0.2.29.

Veeam lists supported Hyper-V virtual hardware versions from 5.0 through 12.0 for Hyper-V 2016 through 2025. Both Generation 1 and Generation 2 VMs are supported, and VHDX disks up to 64 TB are supported. These facts do not guarantee that every VMware guest configuration will migrate without adjustment.

Pay particular attention to workloads using:

  • BSD guest operating systems, which Veeam lists as unsupported for this recovery path.
  • Pass-through disks.
  • Guest disks connected through in-guest Fibre Channel or iSCSI initiators.
  • Unusual firmware, boot, controller or partition configurations.
  • Licensing or clustering tied to the VM’s UUID, MAC address or virtual hardware.

Prerequisites and preparation

  • Veeam Backup & Replication is installed with the required infrastructure components.
  • The VMware vSphere environment is registered with Veeam.
  • The target Hyper-V host is added to the Veeam backup infrastructure and the Hyper-V role is enabled.
  • The repository is accessible to the relevant Veeam Data Movers.
  • The destination has sufficient CPU, memory, temporary space and permanent storage.
  • A host-level Hyper-V virtual switch already exists.
  • VLANs, physical uplinks and firewall rules are ready.
  • An application-consistent backup is available if the workload requires one.
  • A cutover window and rollback plan have been approved.

Veeam warns that disabling changed block tracking for the target Hyper-V host can disable the driver required for Instant Recovery. Review the Instant Recovery limitations and considerations before changing host settings.

Inventory the source VM

Record the following for each VMware VM:

  • VM name, cluster and ESXi host.
  • vCPU, memory, firmware mode and boot-disk order.
  • Every virtual disk, its size, provisioning type and controller location.
  • VMware snapshots and snapshot dependencies.
  • Network adapters, port groups, VLANs, IP addresses and DNS records.
  • Guest operating system and VMware Tools version.
  • Monitoring, backup and security agents.
  • Application, database, storage, replication and load-balancer dependencies.
  • Licenses tied to UUID, MAC address or virtual hardware.

Remove unnecessary VMware snapshots or consolidate them before creating the migration backup. Keep the original VM intact until the Hyper-V copy has passed validation and the rollback period has expired.

Step 1: Create and verify the VMware backup

  1. Open the Veeam console and select Home.
  2. Create a Virtual Machine > VMware vSphere backup job.
  3. Give the job a clear migration-specific name.
  4. Add the complete VM or the intended group of VMs.
  5. Select a repository with enough capacity and suitable performance.
  6. Set retention according to the rollback plan.
  7. Configure guest processing and application-aware processing when required.
  8. Run the job manually.
  9. Confirm that the job completed successfully.
  10. Verify that the restore point is visible and usable.

A one-time migration does not require a particular retention period, synthetic full schedule or active full schedule. Those are backup-policy decisions. A short-lived migration job may be appropriate, but retain the restore point for as long as the rollback plan requires.

At minimum, inspect the job result and restore-point availability. For important workloads, perform a test restore or another recovery verification before the cutover window.

Step 2: Prepare the Hyper-V destination

Add the destination host to Veeam and confirm that Veeam can communicate with it. Verify host credentials, firewall rules, Hyper-V services and available storage.

Decide where the VM’s configuration data and virtual disks will live. For example:

<Hyper-V volume><VM name>
    Virtual Machines
    Virtual Hard Disks

This is an organizational example, not a Veeam-required folder layout. Configuration files, VHDX files, temporary Instant Recovery state and final production storage are separate planning concerns.

For a Hyper-V cluster, select storage accessible to the intended cluster nodes, such as the appropriate CSV or other shared storage. Plan the VM’s cluster registration and resource placement before starting recovery; do not assume that a standalone-host layout is suitable for a cluster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare networking

Create or validate the destination Hyper-V virtual switch at the host level. Veeam states that only virtual switches configured at the Hyper-V host level are available for selection during Instant Recovery to Hyper-V.

Match the source port group or distributed-switch network to the correct Hyper-V switch, but do not rely on similar names. Verify:

  • Production, management, backup and migration networks.
  • VLAN IDs and whether each physical connection is trunk or access mode.
  • Physical switch uplinks and Hyper-V team or SET configuration.
  • DNS, DHCP, static addressing and firewall rules.
  • Load-balancer, monitoring and authentication dependencies.
  • Whether the first boot should use no network or an isolated test network.

Step 3: Launch Instant Recovery to Hyper-V

The exact menu wording can vary slightly by console version and starting point. In current Veeam documentation, the task is launched from the backup and is identified as recovering the VMware VM as a Microsoft Hyper-V VM.

Choose the VM identity carefully

Keeping the original name can simplify inventory continuity, but it is risky while the VMware copy still exists. A temporary name and isolated network are safer for initial testing.

Record the original and recovered VM names, UUIDs and MAC addresses. Check whether monitoring, backup, licensing, clustering or application software depends on any of them. Veeam warns that the recovered VM retains the same MAC address as the original workload. Running both copies connected to the same network can therefore create a MAC conflict as well as an IP conflict.

If the source remains powered on, leave the recovered VM disconnected or isolated. Do not connect both copies to the production network.

Step 4: Boot and test the recovered VM safely

For a pre-cutover test, leave the recovered VM powered off until network isolation and the source-VM state are confirmed. Then boot it in a controlled network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this checklist:

  • Confirm that the VM boots and the expected boot disk is used.
  • Confirm that all disks are present and mounted.
  • Check Windows or Linux services.
  • Verify that application services start in the correct order.
  • Confirm that the network adapter is recognized.
  • Check IP configuration, DNS resolution and domain authentication.
  • Test file shares, databases and dependent services.
  • Check time synchronization.
  • Confirm monitoring, endpoint security and backup agents behave correctly.
  • Run application-level health checks.
  • Check licensing and hardware-dependent application behavior.
  • Review logs for driver, boot, storage and network errors.

A successful boot proves only that the guest started. It does not prove application correctness or final production performance. While the Instant Recovery session is active, the VM reads from backup files and Veeam documents limited I/O performance in this state.

Step 5: Cut over from VMware to Hyper-V

Make source shutdown a formal cutover gate, not an optional cleanup task. The recovered VM can retain the source MAC address, and leaving both copies active can cause duplicate IP or MAC behavior.

  2. Cleanly shut down the VMware source VM.
  3. Confirm in vCenter that the source is powered off.
  4. Confirm that no other device is using the source IP address.
  5. Connect the Hyper-V VM to the intended production virtual switch.
  6. Start the Hyper-V VM.
  7. Validate DNS, authentication, application health and dependent services.
  8. Redirect load balancers, monitoring, scheduled jobs and backup policies as needed.

Do not delete the VMware VM at this point. Preserve it powered off for rollback.

Step 6: Migrate to production storage

Leave the Instant Recovery session running while testing. When the destination is approved, choose Migrate to production from the recovery session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the VMware source is powered off.
  2. Choose Migrate to production.
  3. Select or confirm the final Hyper-V host and storage.
  4. Review the migration settings.
  5. Start the migration.
  6. Monitor the session until all disks are copied.
  7. Confirm that the VM is using the production Hyper-V disks.
  8. Start the VM if it was intentionally left powered off.
  9. Repeat the application and infrastructure validation.

During this operation, Veeam starts additional Data Movers to copy data from the backup repository to the target host. As the copy progresses, reads increasingly come from the production disks instead of the backup files.

Migration duration is environment-dependent. Repository performance, network throughput, target storage, disk size, changed-data volume and concurrent jobs all matter. Do not generalize timing from another administrator’s test environment.

Post-migration tasks

  • Confirm that the intended VHDX files exist in the final production path.
  • Confirm that the VM is registered on the correct Hyper-V host or cluster.
  • Confirm that the Instant Recovery session completed cleanly.
  • Verify normal storage and application performance.
  • Create or enable a Hyper-V backup job for the migrated workload.
  • Run a new backup and verify its restore point.
  • Update monitoring, documentation, disaster-recovery plans and asset inventory.
  • Review DNS, certificates, firewall rules, load-balancer membership and scheduled tasks.
  • Keep the original VMware VM powered off until the agreed rollback period ends.
  • Retire the VMware VM only after formal approval.

Troubleshooting

The VM is not available in the restore wizard

Confirm that the VMware backup completed successfully and contains at least one usable restore point. Check repository availability and permissions. If necessary, run a new backup.

The Hyper-V host cannot be selected

Verify that the host is added to Veeam, credentials and connectivity are valid, the Hyper-V role is enabled and required firewall rules are open. Also check whether changed block tracking or a related host configuration has disabled the Instant Recovery driver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The destination switch is missing

Create or correct the virtual switch on the Hyper-V host itself. Verify its VLAN and uplink configuration. A System Center logical switch should not be assumed to be selectable unless it is exposed to Veeam as an eligible host-level switch.

The recovered VM will not boot

Check firmware and boot mode, boot-disk order, virtual storage drivers, Secure Boot settings and guest-OS support. VMware Tools or platform-specific drivers may need attention. Test with networking disconnected and keep the VMware source untouched while investigating.

The VM has no network connectivity

Verify the Hyper-V switch, VLAN, physical uplink, guest adapter and static IP configuration. Check whether the source port group used tagging differently from the destination switch. Confirm that DNS and firewall rules were updated for the new host path.

There is a duplicate IP or MAC alert

Power off the VMware source before connecting the recovered VM to production. Veeam documents that the recovered VM retains the original MAC address. Check ARP tables, DHCP leases, DNS and any load-balancer records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Performance is slow

First determine whether the VM is still running from the Instant Recovery session. Limited I/O is expected while disks are read from backup files. Complete Migrate to production, then evaluate Hyper-V storage, controller layout, caching and workload performance.

Migration stalls or storage is insufficient

Check space for the source backup, recovery metadata, final VHDX files, working data and subsequent Hyper-V backup chains. Calculate capacity using actual used and provisioned disk sizes, and check repository, network and target-storage health.

When Veeam is the right tool

Veeam is a strong fit when the organization already protects VMware with Veeam, has a usable repository, needs a testable recovery stage and wants to preserve the source VM for rollback. Veeam’s hypervisor migration guide positions cross-hypervisor recovery as a way to move workloads between platforms including VMware and Hyper-V.

It is less attractive when this is a single small migration and deploying or licensing Veeam would outweigh the benefit, or when the workload uses unsupported disks, guests or hardware. Exact licensing and feature entitlement depend on the current edition and licensing model; consult Veeam’s licensing policy or an authorized reseller rather than assuming a feature is included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alternatives

Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager V2V may suit organizations already standardized on System Center and seeking a Microsoft-oriented conversion workflow. A timing reported in one test environment is not a general benchmark.

Rebuilding the VM is often safer for old, heavily customized or technically indebted systems, especially when the migration is also an opportunity to modernize the application.

File-level or image-level recovery can help when complete-VM recovery is unsuitable, but it requires more manual reconstruction. For large estates requiring dependency ordering and repeatable cutovers, a replication or disaster-recovery-based approach may be more appropriate.
