To make Python IMGKit output resemble a browser screenshot, control more than the HTML: IMGKit delegates rendering to wkhtmltoimage, which uses WebKit, so its layout may differ from Chrome or another target browser. Match the renderer environment, assets and fonts, viewport, capture bounds, and JavaScript readiness first; adjust zoom or scaling only after those inputs are consistent. The documentation does not promise pixel-perfect equivalence across rendering engines.
Why IMGKit and a browser render the same HTML differently
IMGKit is a Python wrapper, not a browser engine. It passes content and options to the wkhtmltoimage executable, which renders with WebKit. A current desktop browser can use a different engine, version, font environment, and rendering behavior. That means identical HTML strings do not guarantee identical line breaks, dimensions, or pixels.
First decide what “match” means for your use case. If you need a visually similar image, controlling the inputs and accepting small raster differences may be enough. If the image must match a particular browser workflow closely, the most reliable direction is to render through the same browser engine and version, then define and test an explicit visual tolerance. The reviewed IMGKit and wkhtmltoimage documentation does not establish a universal set of flags that makes their output pixel-identical to every browser.

Make the rendering setup reproducible
Before changing CSS or zoom, record the actual executable and environment. IMGKit lets you select the wkhtmltoimage path through its configuration; the binary, operating system or container, installed fonts, and options affect what it can render.

- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
- Record the installed IMGKit version and the exact path and version of
wkhtmltoimage. - Keep the operating system or container image and installed fonts consistent between runs.
- Use the same final HTML and CSS as the target browser, including any generated styles or content.
- Check whether the page depends on authentication, cookies, custom headers, network access, or relative asset URLs.
For a local file, relative links need a resolvable base, and local CSS, images, or fonts may be blocked by the executable’s local-file access policy. Allow only the resource paths the render needs. If stylesheets are not linked and resolvable from the document, pass them explicitly through IMGKit’s CSS input or a user stylesheet. IMGKit’s README and the utility manual describe these controls: IMGKit documentation and wkhtmltoimage options.
Align viewport and capture dimensions
A browser viewport influences responsive layout; the rectangle saved to the image is a separate concern. Set the renderer viewport to the browser’s viewport and separately align output width, height, or crop geometry with the screenshot you are comparing. The utility documents --viewport-size; its image settings also cover screen width and crop dimensions.
For example, a 1280-pixel-wide viewport with a 900-pixel-tall crop is not the same setup as a 1280-by-900 viewport if page content responds to height or the capture workflow treats viewport bounds differently. Compare the same viewport width and height first, then ensure you are capturing the same region. Consult the installed binary’s help and manual because option availability and effect can depend on the build.

A fixed delay is only a time-based pause, not proof that every request, animation, or client-side task has finished. Prefer an application readiness signal when possible: have the page set a known window status after the content needed for the image is ready, then configure the render to wait for that status. If no such signal exists, choose a delay based on the page’s behavior and validate the result rather than assuming a short default is sufficient.
Use this Python starting point
Install the Python wrapper and make sure the wkhtmltoimage executable is installed separately and available at the path you configure. The sample settings are starting values, not universal recommendations; adapt the viewport and readiness strategy to the page being captured.
import imgkit
options = {
"format": "png",
"encoding": "UTF-8",
"enable-javascript": None,
"javascript-delay": "500", # Replace with an appropriate readiness strategy.
"viewport-size": "1280x800",
"zoom": "1",
}
config = imgkit.config(wkhtmltoimage="/absolute/path/to/wkhtmltoimage")
imgkit.from_file("page.html", "output.png", options=options, config=config)
For a remote page, IMGKit can render a URL; for HTML held in memory, use its string interface. The wrapper accepts utility options and stylesheet inputs. Check the installed binary’s help for supported flags and behavior rather than assuming a setting behaves identically across builds. The project README also recommends running the underlying command directly when a conversion fails, so the executable’s error is visible.
Compare results in a controlled order
- Start with a static fixture. Use a small page with local CSS, a known font, and no asynchronous JavaScript. This makes it easier to isolate renderer and geometry differences.
- Match the browser dimensions. Set the viewport and capture bounds to the intended values. Keep the image format and output dimensions the same for both captures.
- Verify every resource. Check logs for stylesheet, font, image, and script loading. Confirm URL bases, network access, credentials, cookies, and local-file permissions where relevant.
- Add dynamic behavior incrementally. Reintroduce scripts and external assets one group at a time. Use a readiness condition where possible; use a delay only when the page gives no more deterministic signal.
- Check fonts before scale. A fallback font can change glyph widths and line wraps, shifting content below it. Confirm the intended fonts load before changing zoom.
- Tune one scaling setting at a time. Once inputs match, test zoom and smart-shrinking behavior, keeping the exact configuration with each output for repeatability.
Compare geometry first: line wrapping, element positions, and clipping. Then inspect raster-level details such as antialiasing, subpixel rendering, and encoding. Different rendering implementations can leave small pixel differences even when the layout is close; the documentation does not quantify or guarantee a particular tolerance.

IMGKit controls to check when a mismatch remains
| Likely cause | Control to investigate | What it helps establish |
|---|---|---|
| Unexpected executable | imgkit.config(wkhtmltoimage=...) |
Whether IMGKit is using the intended binary path. |
| Viewport or crop mismatch | --viewport-size, screen width, crop width and height |
Whether layout dimensions and captured rectangle align. |
| Dynamic content missing | JavaScript enablement, --javascript-delay, --window-status, debugging output |
Whether scripts ran and the page reached the needed readiness point. |
| Local resources missing | Local-file access policy, allowed paths, resource loading | Whether local CSS, images, or other files are accessible. |
| Styles differ | IMGKit CSS input or a user stylesheet | Whether both renderers receive the intended stylesheet. |
| Text scale differs | Minimum font size, zoom, smart shrinking | Whether font sizing or WebKit scaling changes the result. |
| Screen and print rules diverge | Print-media option | The settings documentation says this has no effect for wkhtmltoimage; do not rely on it to switch this renderer to print styling. |
Troubleshooting common failures
IMGKit cannot find the executable
Check that wkhtmltoimage is installed and that the configured absolute path points to the executable available in the process environment. Run that binary directly to confirm it starts and to inspect its own version and help.
The command fails or crashes
Run the equivalent wkhtmltoimage command outside Python to expose the underlying error. The IMGKit README notes that some versions can fail with segmentation faults. Confirm the binary build and inputs before treating the issue as a Python wrapper problem.
CSS, images, or fonts are absent
Check the HTML’s base URL and whether linked resources are reachable from the render process. For local content, review local-file access settings and allow only the required paths. Supply stylesheets explicitly if they are not otherwise linked and resolvable.
JavaScript content is blank or incomplete
Confirm JavaScript is enabled, then inspect debug output and use a readiness signal if the application can provide one. Increase a delay only as a diagnostic or fallback; a delay cannot establish that a slow or failed request completed.

Text wraps at different points
Verify viewport width, font availability, stylesheet loading, and font-size behavior before adjusting zoom. A font substitution can change character widths and cause cascading layout shifts even when the nominal CSS size is unchanged.
Rendering fails on a headless machine
The IMGKit project README describes using Xvfb where needed. Treat this as an environment compatibility measure, not a setting that makes WebKit render like a different browser.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does setting IMGKit’s print-media option switch it to print styles?
No. The settings documentation says the print-media option has no effect for wkhtmltoimage.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I assume every wkhtmltoimage build supports the same flags?
No. Check the help and behavior of the exact binary installed in your environment.
Will a longer JavaScript delay guarantee a complete page capture?
No. It waits for a duration; it does not confirm that all requests or page work have finished.
