If a WordPress plugin will not update from the dashboard, you can replace its files manually: back up the site, preserve the existing plugin folder, then upload the extracted replacement to wp-content/plugins. Prefer SFTP or FTPS over ordinary FTP, and keep the old folder until you have verified the site.
Before you replace the plugin
Make a current backup of both the site files and the database. WordPress Developer Resources recommends this before uploading, replacing, or deleting WordPress files: back up files and database. A file-only copy will not protect plugin data stored in the database.
- Confirm the correct site root and environment. Hosting accounts may contain multiple sites or staging copies; the target plugin directory must belong to the site you intend to update.
- Download the plugin ZIP from its author or the WordPress Plugin Directory, then extract it on your computer. The destination for the extracted plugin folder is
wp-content/plugins, not the site root. - Check the plugin author’s release notes for any required migration, compatibility, or license steps. Do not blindly replace a customized plugin or one whose vendor specifies a separate upgrade procedure.
Choose a safe way to transfer the files
Use an FTP client, a host’s file manager, or another transfer tool that can upload folders. WordPress documentation notes that ordinary FTP sends data in clear text; use SFTP or FTPS when your host offers them. See the WordPress file-permissions and file-transfer guidance. FTP, FTPS, and SFTP are distinct protocols, so use the connection type and credentials specified by your host.

If you upload the ZIP itself, ensure the file manager extracts it into the correct wp-content/plugins directory and does not create an extra nested folder.

Update one plugin using FTP or SFTP
- Connect to the correct site. Open your FTP/SFTP client or host file manager and navigate to that site’s
wp-content/pluginsdirectory. - Deactivate the plugin if possible. In WordPress, open Plugins and deactivate the plugin you are replacing. If the dashboard is unavailable, use the recovery steps below instead.
- Preserve the current folder. In the server’s plugins directory, rename the plugin’s existing folder—for example, from
plugin-nametoplugin-name-old—or move it to a safe location off the server. Renaming keeps a quick rollback copy on the server, but does not replace a full backup. - Upload the extracted replacement. Transfer the new plugin folder into
wp-content/plugins. Keep the directory name expected by the plugin; avoid uploading only a ZIP unless your file manager will extract it correctly. - Activate and check the update. In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins and activate the replacement. Check the front end, login, admin screens, forms, and the plugin’s main features. Complete any migration or license activation required by the author’s release notes.
- Keep the old copy until verification is complete. Once the replacement works and your backup is secure, you can remove the renamed old folder. Do not delete it while you may still need to roll back.
If the update fails, restore the previous plugin
If the new version causes errors, use FTP/SFTP or the host file manager to deactivate it by renaming its folder, then restore the preserved directory to the plugin’s expected name. For example, rename the new plugin-name folder to plugin-name-failed, then rename plugin-name-old back to plugin-name. If the dashboard is accessible, activate the restored version under Plugins. WordPress’s FTP upgrade guidance also describes renaming the old folder back when backing out of an upgrade: WordPress update documentation.
If files or database changes from the new version have already caused problems, restoring the old folder alone may not reverse them. Use the full backup as appropriate and follow the plugin author’s rollback or migration instructions.

If you cannot access wp-admin
When a plugin failure prevents dashboard access, WordPress.org’s troubleshooting instructions recommend renaming wp-content/plugins to a temporary name such as plugins.hold. This disables all plugins while leaving their files and settings in place. See WordPress troubleshooting.

- Using FTP/SFTP or the host file manager, rename
wp-content/pluginstoplugins.hold. - Try logging in to the WordPress dashboard. Renaming the directory disables all plugins; it does not uninstall them.
- Rename
plugins.holdback toplugins. - In Plugins, reactivate plugins one at a time, checking the site after each activation to identify the one causing the failure.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Replacing the wrong site’s files: verify the site root before changing anything, especially on hosting accounts with staging and production sites.
- Uploading an incorrectly nested folder: the plugin files should be inside the plugin’s expected directory under
wp-content/plugins, not inside an accidental extra copy of the same folder. - Overwriting the only rollback copy: preserve the prior directory and maintain a separate backup of files and database.
- Changing permissions unnecessarily: WordPress guidance advises against altering permissions unless you know they are incorrect. Bad permissions can prevent WordPress, plugins, themes, or the web server from reading or writing files.
- Using ordinary FTP for sensitive transfers: because it sends data in clear text, choose SFTP or FTPS when your host supports them.
WordPress introduced automatic plugin updates in version 5.5, but manual replacement remains an option when dashboard updates fail or when your workflow requires a manual transfer. The method here updates one plugin folder; renaming the entire plugins directory is a broader emergency measure that disables every plugin.
