The safest manual WordPress database backup is a complete SQL export made before upgrades, migrations, or other risky changes. Use phpMyAdmin if you have hosting-panel access, mysqldump over SSH for repeatable command-line backups, or WP-CLI from the WordPress installation directory. Store the export away from the web server and verify that it can be restored.

What a WordPress database backup includes

A database export contains database data such as posts, pages, comments, users, and settings. It does not include your themes, plugins, media in wp-content/uploads, wp-config.php, or other site files. WordPress.org describes a complete site backup as two parts: the database and the files.

Back up at regular intervals and before upgrades, migrations, domain changes, or major configuration work. A database dump alone cannot rebuild a site whose files are missing.

Identify the correct database first

  1. Open the site’s wp-config.php file.
  2. Record DB_NAME, DB_USER, DB_PASSWORD, and DB_HOST.
  3. Confirm that the database belongs to the site you intend to back up; a hosting account may contain several databases.
  4. Note the table prefix, such as wp_. Installations often use a custom prefix, and every table with that prefix must be included.

Do not paste the password into logs, screenshots, or support tickets. When a command-line tool asks for it, enter it at the password prompt.

Method 1: Export with phpMyAdmin

phpMyAdmin is usually the most accessible manual method when your host provides it.

  1. Sign in to your hosting control panel and open phpMyAdmin.
  2. Select the WordPress database in the left navigation. Match it to DB_NAME from wp-config.php.
  3. Open the Export tab.
  4. Choose Quick for a normal export of all tables, select SQL as the format, and click Go.
  5. Save the downloaded .sql file with a date and site identifier, for example example-2026-09-30.sql.

Choose Custom instead of Quick when you need to select particular tables or adjust export options. For a recoverable site backup, export all WordPress tables rather than only the posts table.

Method 2: Create a dump with mysqldump over SSH

If your host provides shell access, run mysqldump with the host, username, and database name from your hosting account or wp-config.php:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
mysqldump --add-drop-table -h db01.example.net -u dbusername -p dbname > blog.bak.sql

Enter the database password when prompted. The --add-drop-table option makes the dump remove same-named tables before recreating them during a restore.

  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required

Compress after the export

gzip blog.bak.sql

This produces blog.bak.sql.gz. For a streaming compressed export that avoids leaving an uncompressed intermediate file, use:

mysqldump --add-drop-table -h db01.example.net -u dbusername -p dbname | gzip > blog.bak.sql.gz

The WordPress handbook also documents bzip2. gzip is generally faster for large databases, while bzip2 may produce a smaller archive; use whichever your server and restore workflow support.

Method 3: Export with WP-CLI

From the WordPress installation directory, run:

wp db dump backup.sql

WP-CLI reads DB_HOST, DB_NAME, DB_USER, and DB_PASSWORD from wp-config.php, then runs a database dump. You can choose another destination filename, include specific tables with --tables, exclude tables with --exclude_tables, and pass valid mysqldump flags when your environment requires them. WP-CLI documents this command as exporting the database to a file or to standard output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Store and verify the backup

  • Keep the export off the web server, such as on an external USB hard drive or portable SSD.
  • Maintain a second copy in another location to protect against server, disk, theft, or accidental-deletion failures.
  • Check that the file exists and has a plausible size. An uncompressed SQL dump should open as readable text containing SQL statements; a compressed archive should decompress successfully.
  • For a production site, test-import the dump into a staging database before depending on it for disaster recovery. This confirms that the file is usable without replacing the live site’s data.

No universal retention period or storage capacity is specified by the WordPress handbook, so choose a schedule that reflects how often the site changes and how much loss you can tolerate.

Restore a database with phpMyAdmin

  1. Create or select the destination MySQL or MariaDB database.
  2. Open phpMyAdmin and select that destination database.
  3. Choose Import.
  4. Browse to the .sql file, or to an archive format supported by your host, confirm the SQL format, and run the import.
  5. Confirm that the expected WordPress tables, including the site’s actual table prefix, appear afterward.

An import replaces the destination database contents with the state captured in the dump. Any changes made after the backup can therefore be lost. Make a separate backup of the destination before importing if it contains data you may need.

Restore from the command line

Decompress a gzip archive first:

gzip -d blog.bak.sql.gz

Then import the SQL file:

mysql -h mysqlhostserver -u mysqlusername -p databasename < blog.bak.sql

Enter the password at the prompt. Verify the destination database and credentials carefully: the command writes directly to the database named in databasename.

Moving the site to another domain

After importing into a different domain, update WordPress’s siteurl and home values in the wp_options table as needed. For all other URL changes, use WordPress-aware search-and-replace tooling so serialized data is handled safely. A plain text replacement can corrupt serialized values and leave the migrated site partially broken.

Which manual method should you use?

Method Access required Best fit Control
phpMyAdmin Hosting-panel access Visual, occasional exports Quick or Custom table and format options
mysqldump SSH or another shell Large databases and scripts Command-line flags, compression, and automation
WP-CLI Shell access and a WordPress installation WordPress-aware workflows Table inclusion or exclusion plus mysqldump options

Command-line exports are usually more practical for large databases when browser upload or download limits interfere. phpMyAdmin is easier when you do not have SSH; WP-CLI is convenient when you already administer the site from its installation directory.

Common problems and checks

  • Wrong database selected: compare the database name and table prefix with wp-config.php before exporting or importing.
  • Permission or connection errors: recheck DB_HOST, username, password, and database privileges; do not assume the host is localhost.
  • Browser limits or timeouts: use mysqldump or WP-CLI, especially for a large database.
  • Missing content after recovery: remember that SQL contains database data only; restore the matching themes, plugins, uploads, and other WordPress files as well.
  • Broken links after a domain move: update siteurl and home, then perform a serialization-safe URL replacement.
