On iOS 18 or later, open the Passwords app, authenticate, choose All, tap Add, enter the service name, username and existing password, then save. On iOS 17 or earlier, use Settings → Passwords → Add. This creates a saved credential on your iPhone; it does not change the password on the website.
What manually adding a password actually does
You are storing login details that already exist in Apple Passwords (and, when enabled, iCloud Passwords & Keychain). You are not changing the online account.
- Save an existing password: Record the username and password you already use.
- Change a password: Sign in to the service and use its account-security settings, then update the saved record.
- Generate a password: Let iPhone suggest a new, strong password while creating or changing an account.
- Create a passkey: Set up passwordless sign-in through a service that supports passkeys.
- Add a verification code: Store a time-based two-factor code in Passwords.

Add a password on iOS 18 or later
- Open the Passwords app.
- Unlock it with Face ID, Touch ID or your iPhone passcode.
- Tap All. This avoids overlooking an entry saved in another category or group.
- Tap the Add button in the upper-right corner.
- Complete the fields described below.
- Tap Save or Done, depending on the wording shown on your iPhone.
- Open the service’s app or website and test AutoFill.

What to enter
- Website or App: Use a recognizable name such as “Example Bank” or “Instagram.”
- Username: Enter the actual identifier—often an email address, but it could be a handle, customer number or membership ID.
- Password: Enter the existing password exactly, including capitalization and symbols.
- Website: Use the real login-domain address when available, rather than only the brand name. Correct domain matching improves AutoFill suggestions.
- Notes: Optional account information. Avoid putting highly sensitive recovery secrets in a note unless you understand the exposure risk.
Be especially careful with leading or trailing spaces, smart quotes, and look-alike characters such as 0 and O. If the service has separate web and app login portals, save the address you actually use; a separate entry may be appropriate.
Add a password on iOS 17 or earlier
- Open Settings.
- Tap Passwords and authenticate.
- Tap Add in the upper-right corner.
- Enter the website, username and password.
- Tap Save (or the equivalent confirmation control).
- Try signing in through the relevant app or website.
Older iOS versions manage saved credentials through Settings rather than the standalone app. See Apple’s password-management guidance and account-management help.
Turn on Password AutoFill
iOS 18 and later
Go to Settings → General → AutoFill & Passwords (Apple’s capitalization may appear as “Autofill & Passwords”), then enable AutoFill Passwords and Passkeys. If another manager is selected, enable Apple Passwords or choose the provider you intend to use. iPhone supports up to three password apps as AutoFill providers: Apple’s AutoFill guide.

iOS 17 and earlier
Open Settings → Passwords → Password Options → AutoFill Passwords. Labels can vary slightly by release.
Use the saved login
- Open the service’s app or website and tap its username, email or password field.
- Choose the suggested account above the keyboard or beside the field.
- Authenticate if prompted.
- If no suggestion appears, tap the Password AutoFill control and choose Other Passwords, then select the entry.
Apple describes both the suggestion and Other Passwords fallback in its iPhone AutoFill instructions. AutoFill does not expose a credential to an app until you consent: Apple Password AutoFill security.
Edit or delete a saved password
iOS 18 and later
- Open Passwords, tap All, and select the account.
- Tap Edit.
- Correct the username, password, website or notes, then tap Done.
- To remove it, tap Delete and confirm.
iOS 17 and earlier
Go to Settings → Passwords, authenticate, select the account, tap Edit, and save or delete the record.

Deleting a record removes the saved credential, not the online account. With iCloud Passwords & Keychain enabled, the deletion can propagate to synchronized devices. Current Passwords versions may show a Deleted or Recently Deleted area, but ordinary deletion should not be treated as recoverable; Apple’s management details are in its support guide.

Sync the entry to other Apple devices
Use the same Apple Account on each device and enable iCloud Passwords & Keychain. A typical current path is Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Passwords and Keychain → Sync This iPhone. Apple says iCloud Keychain keeps passwords and passkeys updated across approved Apple devices; it does not promise an instantaneous sync: Apple Passwords overview.
Password saved but not offered? Work through these checks
- Open Passwords and choose All; check personal and shared groups.
- Search for the saved website or app name.
- Verify the Website field uses the actual login domain.
- Confirm Password AutoFill is enabled and the intended provider is selected.
- Use Other Passwords from the AutoFill menu instead of waiting for a suggestion.
- Look in Deleted or Recently Deleted.
- If it is missing on another device, verify the same Apple Account and iCloud Passwords & Keychain on both.
- Try Safari or the service’s official website. A custom app login screen may not expose standard fields, requiring copy and paste from Passwords.
- Restart the iPhone and install available iOS updates if Passwords or AutoFill is missing or malfunctioning.
A password changed online is not automatically guaranteed to update every saved copy. Edit the Passwords entry after changing the account password.

Passwords, generated passwords and passkeys are different
A manually added record contains a username and password. A generated password is a new random value iPhone proposes during account creation or a password change; Passwords can flag weak, reused or compromised credentials: Apple’s Passwords documentation.
A passkey is a separate, passwordless credential created by a participating website or app and unlocked with Face ID, Touch ID or the device passcode. You cannot generally invent one by typing text into a password record. Passkey setup requires iCloud Keychain and two-factor authentication, and the steps vary by service: Apple’s passkey guide. A service may continue to offer passwords alongside passkeys.
Apple Passwords or a third-party manager?
Apple Passwords is usually sufficient if you mainly use Apple devices and want a built-in, no-extra-subscription vault for passwords, passkeys, verification codes and Wi‑Fi credentials. A third-party manager is worth considering for regular Windows, Android or Linux use, broader browser portability, advanced family or team sharing, emergency access, secure files, identity records, SSH credentials, or less dependence on one ecosystem.

You do not need a third-party app merely to add one password manually to an iPhone.
