Microsoft Edge blocks pop-ups by default. The safest setup is to keep Blocked (recommended) on and allow only a trusted site that genuinely needs to open a separate window or tab.
These desktop steps apply to Edge on Windows and macOS. If what you see is a notification in the corner of your screen or an advertisement inside a webpage, the pop-up setting may not be the right control.
Open Edge’s pop-up settings
In Edge, select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner, then go to:

Block pop-ups on all sites
On the Pop-ups and redirects page, turn on Blocked (recommended). This is the sensible default for most people: it limits unsolicited windows and redirects while letting you make exceptions for specific trusted services.

Allow pop-ups for one trusted site
- On the Pop-ups and redirects page, find Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects.
- Select Add site.
- Enter the site address, beginning with
https://, and select Add.
Use the address supplied by the legitimate service, and check its spelling and domain carefully. Do not allow an unfamiliar advertising, redirect, or download domain just because a page says pop-ups are required. If a trusted service uses more than one domain, identify which address actually opens the needed window before adding another exception. An exception for one site is not a blanket endorsement of every service or third-party frame connected to it.

A pop-up may be reasonable for a known banking, workplace, payment, video-meeting, government, or educational service when its expected workflow requires a separate window. Verify the service’s domain independently; do not rely on claims made by an unsolicited pop-up.

Remove an exception or block a site you previously allowed
Return to Pop-ups and redirects and find the site in the allowed list. Use the list’s available control to remove or edit its entry; the exact control label may differ between Edge versions. Removing an allow exception returns the site to the global setting. If Edge offers a separate per-site Block option and you want an explicit block rule, choose it instead.
Reload the site and retry the workflow. If you removed an exception but the behavior does not change, confirm that you are using the same Edge profile where the exception was created. A work or school device may also have a policy that controls the setting.

Try the address-bar prompt as a shortcut
When you visit a trusted site and trigger an action that needs a pop-up, Edge may show an address-bar notice or permission control indicating that it blocked one. If it appears, use the option to permit pop-ups for that site and retry the action. This is optional; the indicator and wording can vary by Edge release, platform, window size, and site behavior. If you do not see it, add the site from Settings using the steps above.
Is it really a browser pop-up?
| What you see | Likely cause | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| A new browser window or tab, or a partial window over a page | A pop-up or redirect | Pop-ups and redirects |
| An alert in Windows’ lower-right corner or notification center | A website notification | The site’s Notifications permission |
| An ad-shaped panel or dialog inside the current webpage | An in-page advertisement or the site’s own dialog | Not necessarily controlled by the pop-up blocker |
| Unexpected tabs or repeated redirects | A site, extension, or potentially unwanted software | Check exceptions, extensions, and device security |
Edge’s pop-up permission controls windows and redirects; it is not a general-purpose ad blocker. A window deliberately opened after you select a link or button may also appear even with blocking enabled. Microsoft explains these limits in its pop-up guidance.

Turn off website notifications separately
If the alerts appear in the notification area, changing Pop-ups and redirects will not revoke the notification permission. To block notifications from a site, go to Settings and more (…) → Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Site permissions → All sites, select the website, then set Notifications to Block. You can also select the site-information control to the left of the address bar and change Notifications under Permissions for this site. See Microsoft’s instructions for managing website notifications.

- Identify the symptom. A new tab or window points to pop-up behavior; a desktop alert points to notifications; an overlay inside a page may be an ad or site dialog.
- Check the exception list. Make sure the site has not been allowed. Remove an unwanted exception and confirm Blocked (recommended) is on.
- Update Edge. Open Settings and more (…) → Settings → About Microsoft Edge and install an available update, then test again.
- Check extensions. Open Settings and more (…) → Extensions → Manage extension. Disable extensions one at a time and retest to see whether one is causing or changing the behavior. Re-enable extensions that are not responsible.
- Use cookie changes only as a diagnostic. Microsoft includes blocking third-party cookies among troubleshooting steps, but cookie restrictions can interfere with legitimate site functions. Test this only if a particular site is malfunctioning, and restore your preferred setting if it does not help.
- Clear cache or site data if needed. This is not the first step for a simple permission mistake: clearing data can sign you out or remove stored preferences. Retest after clearing only if the problem persists.
- Scan for unwanted software when behavior is aggressive or unrelated to open sites. Persistent alerts do not automatically mean malware, but unrelated tabs, deceptive warnings, or repeated redirects are reasons to scan the device. Follow Microsoft’s pop-up troubleshooting guidance and its linked Windows Security advice.
For work or school administrators
Organizations can manage the default pop-up behavior with Microsoft Edge’s DefaultPopupsSetting policy: 1 allows pop-ups for all sites and 2 blocks them. The PopupsAllowedForUrls policy defines site-specific allow patterns and supports wildcards. Microsoft lists supported Edge versions and platforms in its documentation for DefaultPopupsSetting and PopupsAllowedForUrls.
These are administrator policies, not recommended consumer workarounds. If a setting is greyed out or keeps reverting on a managed device, contact your organization’s administrator rather than trying to override it.

- Use the official HTTPS address and verify the domain independently.
- Do not trust urgent security warnings, phone numbers, or download instructions in unsolicited pop-ups.
- Remove exceptions when they are no longer needed.
