Microsoft Edge now generally labels the former Bing Chat entry point Copilot; work or school accounts may show Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. To show or hide the toolbar button, go to Settings and more (…) > Settings > Appearance > Copilot and sidebar > Copilot, then switch Show Copilot button on the toolbar on or off. The button opens the sidebar; hiding it does not by itself disable Copilot or the entire sidebar.
Show the Copilot button on the toolbar
- In Edge, select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner, then select Settings.
- Open Appearance.
- Under Other appearance settings, select Copilot and sidebar > Copilot.
- Turn on Show Copilot button on the toolbar. The button should appear in the upper-right area of the toolbar.
You can try opening the settings directly by entering edge://settings/appearance/copilotAndSidebar in the address bar. Microsoft documents the toolbar control in its Edge privacy information.
Hide the button without disabling Copilot
Use the same path—Settings and more (…) > Settings > Appearance > Copilot and sidebar > Copilot—and turn off Show Copilot button on the toolbar. This removes that toolbar entry point. It does not necessarily disable Copilot through other entry points or turn off other Edge sidebar apps. Microsoft documents Ctrl+Shift+. as a keyboard shortcut for opening Copilot in Edge, though the shortcut may vary with platform, keyboard layout, account, or Edge version.

Control access to webpage and PDF content
To keep Copilot from using the active page as context, open Settings > Appearance > Copilot and sidebar > Copilot and turn off the page- or browser-content permission. Depending on your Edge build and account, the setting may be labelled Allow Copilot to use browser content or Allow Microsoft to access page content. Microsoft describes these controls in its Copilot management guidance and Edge privacy information.

With page access allowed, Edge may send browsing context for the session so Copilot can respond about the page or a supported PDF. Support varies by document type; not every PDF, local file, protected page, or document can be summarized. See Microsoft’s Copilot in Edge documentation for current feature and compatibility details.
Turning off page-content access is not the same as preventing all data from being sent. Microsoft says some requests may include basic context such as the query, URL, page title, and conversation history. It says page content itself is not stored as conversation history, while conversation history remains until you delete it. Review Microsoft’s privacy explanation for the details.
Turn off the whole sidebar
The toolbar button, Copilot app, and Edge sidebar are distinct controls. Hiding the button only removes the entry point. In managed environments, administrators can disable the sidebar with the HubsSidebarEnabled policy; doing so also prevents other Edge sidebar apps from being enabled. For individual users, do not assume that turning off the Copilot button disables every sidebar feature. Microsoft’s management guidance explains the organization-level control.

Manage Copilot in a work or school profile
Personal Microsoft-account Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat for work or school use different account and policy systems. Work access may depend on Microsoft Entra sign-in, tenant configuration, licensing, and administrator controls. Enterprise data protection applies to Copilot Chat prompts and responses when the user is signed in with a Microsoft Entra account, according to Microsoft’s Copilot in Edge documentation.
Control the toolbar icon
For Microsoft Entra profiles in Edge for Business, administrators can configure Microsoft365CopilotChatIconEnabled:
- Enabled: Copilot appears in the toolbar.
- Disabled: Copilot does not appear in the toolbar.
- Not configured: The icon is shown by default, and users can generally control it with the toolbar setting.
Microsoft lists support for Windows and macOS on Edge version 139 or later; the policy is not supported on Android or iOS and does not apply to profiles signed in with a personal Microsoft account. On Windows, the Group Policy path is Administrative Templates/Microsoft Edge; the registry value is SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdgeMicrosoft365CopilotChatIconEnabled, type REG_DWORD. Recommended settings use SOFTWAREPoliciesMicrosoftEdgeRecommended. See the policy’s Microsoft documentation for configuration details.

Control page context
Organizations can use EdgeEntraCopilotPageContext for work-profile page context and CopilotPageContext for the personal Microsoft-account/Bing scenario. These policies limit browsing context rather than simply hiding the icon. Their scope differs, so administrators should consult Microsoft’s Copilot management guidance before applying them.

Check whether a policy is in control
Enter edge://policy in the address bar and look for Microsoft365CopilotChatIconEnabled, HubsSidebarEnabled, EdgeEntraCopilotPageContext, CopilotPageContext, or ExtensionInstallBlocklist. A managed policy can force a setting, remove the user toggle, or prevent a change from taking effect. If the device or profile is managed, ask the administrator to change an enforced policy.
Troubleshoot a missing Copilot button or sidebar app
Work through these checks in order. On a managed device, check policy before changing broader browser settings.

- Open
edge://settings/appearance/copilotAndSidebarand confirm the sidebar is enabled. - Open Copilot’s app-specific settings and switch on Show Copilot button on the toolbar.
- Restart Edge, then check whether the button or Copilot sidebar app appears.
- Open
edge://policyand check for policies that hide the icon, disable the sidebar, restrict page context, or block extensions. - Check for an Edge update at
edge://settings/help. - Sign out of the Edge profile and sign back in. If the issue may be profile-specific, test a new Edge profile.
- If you use a work or school profile, contact your administrator.
Microsoft’s missing Copilot icon troubleshooting guidance also identifies account or region availability, outdated Edge, group policy, extension restrictions, and profile problems as possible causes. If the sidebar is present but Copilot is missing, check the app-specific setting and sidebar policy as well as the account and Edge version.
Use a browser reset only as a late step: it can change settings such as the homepage, new-tab page, search engine, pinned tabs, extensions, cookies, and temporary data. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page says favorites, history, and saved passwords are not affected by the reset it describes.

Menu wording and availability can vary with Edge version or channel, operating system, account type, region, and organization policy. Current controls are under Appearance and Copilot/sidebar settings; older Bing Chat instructions may point to labels that no longer match the interface. Personal Microsoft-account users may see Microsoft Copilot, while work or school users may see Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat.
Copilot features also depend on context. Microsoft’s work-focused Edge documentation, updated February 20, 2026, says Rewrite in Edge is temporarily unavailable in Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat. A separate Edge privacy page documents Compose and Rewrite with Copilot in some Edge contexts, including the Alt+I shortcut and a setting under Languages > Writing assistance. These descriptions are not a promise that the same feature appears for every account or interface.
For work users, Microsoft says enterprise data protection applies to Copilot Chat prompts and responses when signed in with a Microsoft Entra account. Feature availability and page-summary support remain subject to account, tenant, policy, and document compatibility.
