To allow one trusted website to open pop-up windows while keeping Microsoft Edge’s blocker enabled, go to Settings and more (…) > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > Pop-ups and redirects. Under Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects, select Add site, enter the site’s address beginning with https://, and select Add.
This site-specific exception is safer than disabling pop-up blocking for every website. Menu labels can vary slightly by Edge version, language, platform, or organization policy. See Microsoft’s current pop-up instructions for reference.
Allow pop-ups for one website on Windows or Mac
- Open Microsoft Edge and select Settings and more (…).
- Select Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services.
- Select Site permissions, then All permissions.
- Choose Pop-ups and redirects.
- Leave Blocked (recommended) enabled.
- Under Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects, select Add site.
- Enter the trusted website’s address, including the protocol—for example,
https://example.com—and select Add.
Use the legitimate address shown by the service or your organization, not a random search-result URL. Banking, payment, authentication, exam, reporting, and business applications may use a separate domain for a sign-in window or transaction. If adding the main site does not work, check the domain shown in the blocked-pop-up message or address bar before adding another trusted exception.
Review, edit, or remove an allowed site
Return to Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All permissions > Pop-ups and redirects and review the Allowed to send pop-ups and use redirects list. Use the control beside the relevant website to remove or change the exception if those options are available in your Edge build. If Edge offers only removal, delete the entry and add the corrected address again.

Remove temporary exceptions after finishing the task. A permission should cover only the trusted site that needs it; avoid broad wildcard patterns unless an administrator is deliberately configuring managed Edge policies.
Should you turn off pop-up blocking?
Usually, no. Turning off Blocked (recommended) allows pop-ups broadly and gives unfamiliar or compromised websites more opportunity to open unwanted windows, redirects, fake warnings, phishing pages, or malicious downloads. Keep the global blocker on and use the allow list for a specific site.
You can temporarily disable the global blocker as a diagnostic test. If the service works only while blocking is disabled, turn blocking back on and create the narrow site exception instead.

What Edge’s pop-up blocker controls
Edge’s pop-up protection is intended to stop webpages from automatically opening a new window, tab, partial window, or certain redirects associated with that behavior. Legitimate websites may use pop-ups for statements, authentication, payment flows, document previews, downloads, or administrative consoles. Microsoft also warns that pop-ups can be used for scams and malicious downloads.
The setting does not control everything that looks like a pop-up:
- User-initiated windows: Edge does not necessarily block a window opened after you deliberately select a button or link.
- In-page advertisements: Ads or fake warnings drawn inside the webpage are not necessarily controlled by the pop-up permission.
- Notifications: Alerts delivered through Windows or macOS notifications use a separate permission.
- Extensions: An extension can alter pages, redirects, or blocking behavior independently of the site setting.

Use the toggle to block or allow pop-ups. Microsoft’s mobile help documents this as a device-level control rather than the same desktop-style, site-by-site allow list, so do not assume that every Android Edge version exposes identical exception controls.

The documented iOS procedure does not establish a consumer-facing, per-site allow list equivalent to the desktop interface. If a particular iPhone or iPad build shows different controls, follow that build’s labels; otherwise, the available choice may be global blocking rather than a single-site exception. If an allowed site still cannot open its pop-up
- Reload the page. A page that was already open may need to be refreshed after changing permissions.
- Confirm the domain. The pop-up may originate from an app, login, payment, identity-provider, or reporting domain different from the page you opened.
- Check the address bar. Edge displays an indicator when it blocks a pop-up. Use it to identify the blocked action and, where appropriate, allow the trusted site.
- Update Edge. Open Settings and more (…) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge and install an available update.
- Test extensions. Temporarily disable extensions one at a time to find a content blocker, security tool, or other extension that interferes.
- Review cookie restrictions. Third-party cookie blocking can affect authentication and embedded payment flows, although relaxing cookie protection may reduce privacy or compatibility.
- Clear relevant cached data. Stale site data can prevent a web application from completing its launch sequence.
- Check the site itself. The issue may involve JavaScript, account permissions, redirects, a service outage, or a setting inside the application.
- Identify the actual symptom. A notification, in-page overlay, or extension-generated warning requires a different fix.
Microsoft lists updating Edge, disabling extensions, reviewing third-party cookies, and clearing cache among its troubleshooting measures in the pop-up support article.
Pop-ups, notifications, and in-page ads are different

To block unwanted website notifications, go to Settings and more (…) > Settings > Privacy, search, and services > Site permissions > All sites, select the website, and set Notifications to Block. Work and school computers
If the allow-list control is missing, disabled, or repeatedly reverts, Edge may be managed by an employer, school, or other organization. Check whether Edge displays a message that it is managed by your organization, then contact the administrator rather than changing the registry or attempting to bypass policy.
Administrators can use DefaultPopupsSetting to define the global behavior and PopupsAllowedForUrls to define site-specific URL exceptions. Microsoft documents these policies for supported Edge versions on Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. The site-specific policy supports URL patterns and wildcards, but broad patterns can grant permission to more sites than intended.
For policy details, see Microsoft’s documentation for DefaultPopupsSetting and PopupsAllowedForUrls. A mandatory policy may prevent a user from changing the setting locally.
Security checklist
- Allow only websites you recognize and trust.
- Use the narrowest domain needed.
- Do not add a site just because a pop-up claims your computer is infected or that you won a prize.
- Do not assume a familiar brand name makes a redirected domain legitimate.
- Remove temporary exceptions when the task is complete.
- Keep global pop-up blocking enabled unless you have a specific reason to test otherwise.
