Windows 11 has no single switch for “OneDrive deletion notifications.” You can control OneDrive’s Windows alerts in Settings > System > Notifications, but account emails and shared-file notices are separate. Turning alerts off does not stop OneDrive syncing or prevent a deletion from reaching the cloud. If files are already missing, check both the Windows and OneDrive Recycle Bins.
First, identify which notification you’re seeing
“OneDrive deletion notification” can mean several things. The right place to manage it depends on whether the message is a Windows pop-up, an account email, or a prompt from the sync client.

OneDrive’s desktop settings are typically available by selecting the OneDrive cloud icon in the taskbar notification area, then Help & Settings (gear) > Settings. If the icon is hidden, look in the taskbar overflow menu. Labels and available settings can vary by Windows build, OneDrive version, and account type. Turn off or customize OneDrive alerts in Windows 11
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select System > Notifications.
- Under Notifications from apps and other senders, find OneDrive.
- Turn off OneDrive’s main notification switch to block its Windows notifications, or open its entry to adjust the options available on your PC.
Depending on your Windows 11 build, the OneDrive entry may let you control notification banners, Notification Center visibility, sounds, or other behaviors. If you want fewer interruptions but still want a record of alerts, turn off banners and sounds while leaving Notification Center notifications on, if those options are shown.
This changes how Windows displays notifications; it does not pause sync, prevent deletions, or turn off OneDrive email. If you still receive email notices after disabling Windows notifications, manage those separately in OneDrive’s web or app settings. Sign in to the appropriate OneDrive account, open Settings, and look for Notifications or related options. The available categories can differ between personal and work or school accounts. Choose a notification setup that fits
- Keep deletion warnings: Leave OneDrive notifications enabled if you want to notice unexpected activity. You can use Windows Focus or Do Not Disturb when you need fewer interruptions.
- Reduce pop-ups, keep a record: If offered, disable banners or sounds but retain Notification Center alerts.
- Stop OneDrive alerts: Disable OneDrive in Windows Notifications, then separately turn off any unwanted OneDrive email or account notifications.
Disabling alerts can make it easier to miss a useful warning about a large or unexpected change. Notification preferences are not a substitute for checking the files or maintaining a backup.
Deleting a synced file is different from freeing disk space
A file in your OneDrive folder in File Explorer is part of a sync relationship. Deleting it there can send the deletion to OneDrive and other connected devices. If you only want to reclaim local storage, don’t delete the file: use Files On-Demand to make it online-only instead. The cloud copy remains available while the local download is removed. This distinction matters especially if OneDrive backs up your Desktop, Documents, or Pictures folders: an item that looks like an ordinary local file may be in a synchronized location. A shared-folder deletion can also affect other people, while removing a shared item from your own Shared list is not necessarily the same as deleting the underlying file.
Recover a deleted file: check both Recycle Bins
Deleted items are not necessarily permanently gone, but the recovery location depends on how the item was stored and deleted. If you are unsure, check both locations before emptying either bin.

Check the Windows Recycle Bin
Start here when a locally available file was deleted from File Explorer:
- Open Recycle Bin on the Windows desktop.
- Find and select the file or folder.
- Right-click it and choose Restore.
The item should return to its original location. A deleted online-only file may not appear in the Windows Recycle Bin.

Check the OneDrive web Recycle Bin
Use this route for a file deleted from OneDrive.com, an online-only file, a file missing from the Windows bin, or an item connected to cloud sync:
- Go to OneDrive.com and sign in to the account that held the file.
- Select Recycle bin in the left navigation.
- Select the item and choose Restore.
For a Personal Vault item, unlock the vault before checking the Recycle Bin. Work or school files may be subject to organizational retention rules or SharePoint recovery processes. Microsoft’s recovery guidance explains the different Recycle Bin paths and account distinctions.

Microsoft documents automatic Recycle Bin deletion after 30 days for personal Microsoft accounts and 93 days for work or school accounts, unless an administrator changes the latter setting. These are documented periods, not a guarantee that every item will be recoverable for exactly that long: account type, organizational policy, and whether the bin was emptied matter.

- Stop editing or reorganizing the affected folders. Further changes can complicate recovery.
- If you need to contain an active sync, pause OneDrive temporarily. Select its taskbar cloud icon and use Help & Settings to find the pause option. Pausing sync is temporary; it does not restore files.
- Check another synced device to see whether a copy is still available there.
- Check the Windows Recycle Bin and OneDrive web Recycle Bin. Restore individual affected items if possible.
- If the deletion is widespread and you are eligible, consider Restore your OneDrive. Microsoft says the feature can roll back eligible file and folder activity within the previous 30 days for Microsoft 365 subscribers.
Microsoft advises allowing an accidental large deletion to complete and then undoing or restoring it rather than relying on an uncertain attempt to interrupt it. Pausing sync can be useful while you investigate, but it is not itself an undo. See Microsoft’s guidance on stopping or pausing OneDrive.
When to use Restore your OneDrive
Use this broader rollback when many files were deleted, overwritten, corrupted, or changed in a way that individual restores cannot reasonably address. It is not the same as restoring one file from the Recycle Bin, and it is not a conventional independent backup. Microsoft says files and folders created after the selected restore point are moved to the OneDrive Recycle Bin; albums are not restored, and items permanently deleted from the Recycle Bin cannot be recovered through this feature. Check the proposed restore point and its consequences before proceeding. Details and eligibility are in Microsoft’s Restore your OneDrive documentation.
If the file is still missing
- Confirm that OneDrive.com and the Windows client are signed in to the correct Microsoft account. Personal and work or school accounts are separate.
- Search OneDrive.com and File Explorer; the item may have been moved or renamed rather than deleted.
- Check both Recycle Bins and another synced device. Don’t empty a bin while you are still investigating.
- Check whether Desktop, Documents, or Pictures is included in OneDrive backup.
- For a shared folder, ask its owner whether it was removed or deleted; recipients may not have authority to restore it.
- For work or school files, ask your administrator about retention, permissions, or SharePoint/Teams recovery. Microsoft provides a separate guide for items deleted from SharePoint or Teams.
Microsoft’s missing-file guidance also recommends verifying the account and searching the relevant locations. If an item is absent from the appropriate Recycle Bin or has been permanently deleted, standard OneDrive restoration may no longer be available.
