On a personal Instagram account, open your profile, go to Menu (☰) → Settings and activity (or Settings) → Account privacy, turn off Private account, and confirm Switch to public (or the equivalent wording). Your posts can then be viewed by anyone on Instagram, and people can follow without approval.
Instagram’s menu labels vary by app version, language, device and account type. The official privacy instructions describe the same Account privacy setting used to enable private mode; making a personal account public is the reverse action. See Instagram’s account-privacy guidance.
Make your account public on iPhone or Android
- Open Instagram and tap your profile picture in the bottom-right.
- Tap ☰ Menu in the top-right.
- Choose Settings and activity or Settings.
- Open Account privacy. It is commonly listed under a section such as Who can see your content.
- Switch Private account off.
- When Instagram asks you to confirm, choose Switch to public, Make public or the equivalent option.
The change applies to the account, not just the phone on which you made it. Instagram says mobile and web privacy settings are linked.
Make your account public on a computer
On Instagram.com, open More → Settings → Account privacy, then turn off Private account and confirm the change. Instagram can present a different layout for different accounts, so treat this as the corresponding web setting rather than a guaranteed identical menu sequence. How to verify that your account is public
- Return to Account privacy and check that Private account is off.
- Open your profile in a logged-out browser, or use another Instagram account that does not follow you.
- Check whether that non-follower can open a recent post and follow you without sending a follow request.
Do not rely only on your own logged-in view: you can always see your own profile. A public profile is generally reachable at instagram.com/yourusername. A private profile limits posts on the web to logged-in, approved followers.
What changes when you go public?
- Followers: Anyone on Instagram can follow without your approval.
- Posts: Anyone on Instagram can generally view your feed posts and Reels.
- Discovery: Posts may be eligible to appear in Instagram Search, Explore, hashtag pages and location pages. Public content may also appear in search-engine results when Instagram’s settings and eligibility allow it; public status does not guarantee indexing or a particular ranking.
- Sharing: Depending on separate content controls, other people may be able to share, remix, embed or download certain public content.
Your profile photo, name, username and bio can be visible more broadly even while an account is private. Going public does not automatically open every other setting: comments, message requests, mentions, tags, Stories, activity status and sharing permissions remain separately configurable. Instagram compares these public and private behaviors in its public-account guidance.
Review these settings before switching
- Inspect older posts, Reels, Highlights and tagged content. Remove or archive anything that contains private conversations, addresses, school or workplace details, travel plans or identification documents.
- Check your bio, profile photo, links and any contact buttons. Public profile information can be seen beyond your approved followers.
- Review Comments, Mentions, Tags, Messages and Story-reply controls, and restrict them if needed.
- Look for controls governing Reel downloads, remixing, embedding and resharing, where available for your account.
- Remember that making an account private again cannot retrieve copies someone already downloaded, screenshotted or reshared.
Why can’t I find “Account privacy”?
You have a Creator or Business account
Instagram’s professional-account documentation says Creator and Business accounts cannot be private; they are already public-facing. That is why a public/private toggle may not appear. Details are in Instagram’s professional-account help.

Your age or supervision settings restrict the change
Instagram says accounts belonging to people under 18 are private by default. Users under 16 need a parent or guardian’s permission to switch public. Ages 16–17 can generally change to public without permission unless parental supervision is enabled. The actual result can depend on the age recorded on the account, region and current Teen Account protections.
The setting moved or the app is not displaying it
- In Settings, search for privacy or account privacy.
- Update Instagram through your device’s official app store.
- Close and reopen the app, then log out and back in.
- Try Instagram.com or another supported device. Instagram Lite and mobile-web layouts may expose fewer controls.
- Confirm the account type in the account-type or professional-tools area.
- If the option is still absent, use Instagram’s in-app Help or Report a problem flow. Do not give your password to an app claiming it can unlock the setting.
Do you need a professional account?
No. A personal account can be public; switching to Creator or Business is optional. Professional accounts add features such as Insights, a professional dashboard, category labels and optional contact information, but Instagram says they cannot be private. If you later want a professional account to become private, switch it back to a personal account first, then enable Private account. The route may be labelled For professionals, Creator tools and controls or Business tools and controls → Switch account type → Switch to personal account. Changing type can affect Insights, contact buttons, category labels and connected Facebook-page behavior.
What about old posts and pending follow requests?
Feed posts and Reels on an account that is now public can generally be viewed by people who previously could not see them. Stories, Highlights, archived posts, tagged posts and material copied to other networks can follow different audience or sharing rules, so check each content area rather than assuming every historical item behaves identically.

Instagram’s published guidance does not establish one universal rule for pending follow requests when a private account becomes public. Check your follower list and requests after changing the setting instead of assuming every request was approved.
How to switch back to private
For a personal account, return to Profile → Menu → Settings and activity (or Settings) → Account privacy, turn Private account on and confirm. If the account is Creator or Business, switch to a personal account first; professional accounts cannot use private mode.

Does making my account public guarantee that it will appear on Google?
No. Public posts may be eligible for search-engine results, but indexing and ranking depend on Instagram’s settings and eligibility.
Can I make just one Instagram post public?
The public/private switch applies to the account. Use Instagram’s separate audience, sharing and content controls for narrower visibility rather than treating the account switch as a per-post setting.
