There is no iPhone or iPad setting that can make your internet faster than your router, broadband plan, or the website you’re using allows. The quickest way to improve slow Wi‑Fi is to find the bottleneck: test another device, compare speeds near the router and in the problem room, then work through the fixes below. Menu wording can vary slightly by iOS or iPadOS version and device management.

Start with these quick checks

  1. Move closer to the router. If performance improves, the problem is likely coverage, walls, or interference rather than the iPad or iPhone itself.
  2. Pause heavy network use. Temporarily stop large downloads, cloud backups, game updates, or high-resolution streams on other devices.
  3. Restart your iPhone or iPad. After it restarts, unlock it so it can use saved Wi‑Fi credentials and rejoin the network.
  4. Restart the modem and router. If they are separate, power on the modem first and wait until it is online, then power on the router. Follow the maker’s procedure; restarting is not the same as factory-resetting.
  5. Check for an outage. If the modem does not come back online or all devices have lost internet, check with your ISP.

Restarting can clear a temporary connection problem, but it cannot raise the maximum speed of your internet plan.

First find out whether the iPhone, Wi‑Fi, or internet service is slow

“Wi‑Fi speed” and “internet speed” are related but not identical. Wi‑Fi is the wireless link between your device and the router. Internet performance also depends on the router’s connection to your ISP, the plan, network congestion, and the remote app or website.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Test another device on the same Wi‑Fi. If several devices are slow, investigate the router, ISP, outage, or congestion first.
  • Test the iPhone or iPad on another Wi‑Fi network. If it works well elsewhere, the home network is a stronger suspect. If only that Apple device is slow on multiple networks, focus on its settings, software, VPN, or hardware.
  • Compare locations. Fast beside the router but slow in one room points to coverage or interference. Slow everywhere, on every device, points more toward the router or broadband service.
  • Compare apps and sites. If one service is slow while others work, the app, its server, DNS lookup, or a service outage may be responsible—not the Wi‑Fi radio.

Apple recommends trying other devices and another Wi‑Fi location to isolate a connection problem. See Apple’s Wi‑Fi troubleshooting steps.

Make speed tests comparable

Run the same test service on the same device near the router and in the problem room, then repeat at another time of day. Note download speed, upload speed, latency or ping, and jitter if the test provides it. One result is not conclusive: the test server, time, other network traffic, and test method can affect the number. A speed test measures the route to its test server, not every website or streaming service. If available, compare with a router-level or wired test as well. The FCC’s broadband guidance notes that multiple devices sharing a wireless network can affect performance.

Choose the best Wi‑Fi band for where you are

Different bands trade range for capacity. If your router presents separate network names, test them in the location where you actually use the device:

Band Often useful for Trade-off
2.4 GHz Farther rooms and areas behind walls Usually reaches farther, but can be more congested and offer lower throughput.
5 GHz Higher throughput nearer the router Often faster, but typically has less range than 2.4 GHz.
6 GHz Compatible devices near a suitable router Can offer more capacity and less congestion, but range is shorter and both device and router must support it.

When one network name covers multiple bands, the device and router may choose the band automatically; the network name alone does not tell you which band is in use. Apple’s network-selection behavior considers Wi‑Fi generation, band, signal strength, and other factors. Wi‑Fi 6E and Wi‑Fi 7 availability depends on the exact Apple model, region, router, and configuration. A newer Wi‑Fi standard does not guarantee faster internet if the plan or broadband connection is the limit. Check Apple’s device and Wi‑Fi specifications for model-specific support.

Improve signal and reduce congestion

  • Place the router centrally, elevated, and in the open—not on the floor or tucked inside a cabinet.
  • Keep it away from thick walls and large appliances where practical, and reduce the distance and number of walls between it and the device.
  • If the household is busy, test while fewer devices are streaming or downloading. Check the router’s connected-device list and any parental-control, traffic-filtering, or device-priority settings.
  • For a large or multi-floor home, a mesh system or added access point may improve coverage. Place mesh nodes where they still receive a strong connection from the main router; a node in a dead zone cannot reliably relay a good signal. Wired Ethernet backhaul is usually more dependable than a weak wireless link.
  • An extender may help in some layouts, but it adds another wireless hop and can reduce throughput. Check performance before and after adding one.

Buying a new router makes sense only if the router is the constraint—for example, it is obsolete, damaged, overloaded, or unable to cover the home. It will not fix a failing ISP line or make a slow broadband plan faster.

Check that the iPhone or iPad is using the intended connection

  1. Open Settings → Wi‑Fi. Make sure Wi‑Fi is on and the intended network has a blue checkmark. Apple explains the connection indicators in its Wi‑Fi connection guide.
  2. Check Airplane Mode and turn it off if you intend to use Wi‑Fi and it is enabled.
  3. Remember that Wi‑Fi Assist can use cellular data when Wi‑Fi performance is poor. It is a cellular fallback, not a Wi‑Fi speed booster. Check it when diagnosing unexpectedly high cellular use or inconsistent behavior.

Forget and rejoin the network

A saved network profile can sometimes be the problem. Before starting, make sure you know the Wi‑Fi password.

  1. Open Settings → Wi‑Fi.
  2. Tap the More Info button beside the connected network.
  3. Tap Forget This Network, then confirm with Forget.
  4. Select the network again and enter its password.

Forgetting removes the saved password and connection profile. A supervised or managed device may not offer the option. Apple notes that forgetting a network also affects its associated private address under the applicable iOS or iPadOS behavior. See Apple’s instructions to forget a network and its guidance on Private Wi‑Fi Address.

Update both ends of the connection

Install available iOS or iPadOS updates, and check for router firmware through the manufacturer’s app or administration page. Updates may fix compatibility, stability, or security problems; they are not guaranteed to increase speed. Apple recommends keeping router software current and checking that the router supports the Apple device. For router setup considerations, see Apple’s recommended router and access-point settings.

Test VPNs, security apps, and network profiles

A VPN changes the route traffic takes and can add processing overhead or latency. Security software, DNS filters, parental-control profiles, and school or work management settings can also affect connections. Test carefully:

  1. Temporarily disconnect the VPN and compare performance.
  2. If you use third-party network or security software, follow its maker’s instructions for a temporary test. Do not leave protection disabled as a permanent speed fix.
  3. Restart the device and test again, then re-enable the protection.
  4. If the iPhone or iPad is managed by a school or employer, ask the administrator before changing profiles or controls.

Apple includes VPN and security software among the items to check when troubleshooting Wi‑Fi. A speed difference during a test does not by itself mean a VPN or protection app is unnecessary.

Keep Private Wi‑Fi Address on unless you have a compatibility reason

Private Wi‑Fi Address helps reduce tracking of a device across networks. On supported newer operating systems, the network’s setting may offer Off, Fixed, or Rotating. Find it under Settings → Wi‑Fi → More Info for that network. Apple recommends leaving private addresses enabled on networks that support them.

Turning it off is not a routine speed tweak. Consider a temporary test only if a network has a specific authorization or compatibility problem, or Apple identifies one. Update the device and router first, and restore the privacy setting if the test does not resolve the issue.

DNS: useful for lookup problems, not a bandwidth upgrade

DNS translates a domain name such as a website address into an IP address. A slow or failing lookup can delay the start of some connections, but changing DNS does not increase the Wi‑Fi radio’s throughput or your ISP plan’s maximum bandwidth. DNS performance varies by location, provider, routing, and cache state; no one provider is fastest for everyone.

Reset Network Settings only as a last resort

If the problem is limited to one Apple device and simpler fixes have failed, a network reset can clear some saved configuration. Have the Wi‑Fi password ready. Menu wording can vary slightly.

  1. Open Settings → General.
  2. Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone or Transfer or Reset iPad.
  3. Tap Reset → Reset Network Settings.

This does not erase photos, apps, or other personal media. It does remove saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords and can remove mobile, VPN, or APN settings; you may need to configure connections again. It can disrupt work or school access, so check with an administrator if the device is managed. Apple describes the reset and its effects in its reset settings guide.

When to contact your ISP, router maker, or Apple

What you observe Who to contact or what to investigate
All devices are slow, even beside the router; wired or router-level tests are also poor. Check the plan and outage status, then contact the ISP about the line, modem, or service.
Modem will not regain service, or the connection drops repeatedly across devices. Contact the ISP; if the service is healthy, ask the router maker to check the equipment.
Wi‑Fi is fast near the router but weak in certain rooms. Adjust router or mesh placement, or consider an access point or mesh system if coverage is the confirmed issue.
Only one device is slow across several Wi‑Fi networks. After updates and network troubleshooting, contact Apple Support if the problem persists.
Only one app or website is slow. Check that service, its app, and VPN, DNS, or filtering behavior before changing router hardware.

Do not repeatedly change iPhone settings when the evidence points to the ISP. Apple advises contacting the provider if other devices still cannot access the internet after network troubleshooting. A router upgrade or faster broadband tier is worth considering only after tests show which one is limiting performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing DNS make Wi‑Fi faster?

It may reduce delays caused by name lookups in some cases, but it does not increase Wi‑Fi throughput or your internet plan’s bandwidth.

Should I turn off Private Wi‑Fi Address?

Usually not. Keep it enabled unless you are diagnosing a specific network compatibility or authorization problem; it is not a general speed fix.

Does Wi‑Fi 7 make an older iPad faster?

Only if the iPad supports the relevant Wi‑Fi standard, and even then the router, signal, and internet plan also limit real-world performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will Reset Network Settings delete my photos?

No. It removes network-related settings such as saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords, and may remove VPN, mobile, or APN settings.

Why is Wi‑Fi fast near the router but slow upstairs?

Distance, walls, and placement can weaken the signal. Try a better router or mesh-node location, or consider an access point or mesh system if testing confirms a coverage problem.

Should I buy a new router or upgrade my internet plan?

Use comparable tests to identify the bottleneck first. A router helps with coverage or capacity problems; a plan upgrade helps only when the broadband service itself is limiting performance.
