Make the page understandable to a normal crawler, parser, screen reader, and human. Put the important words in crawlable HTML, organize them with meaningful headings and sections, expose content after JavaScript rendering, describe images and controls with text, and keep structured data consistent with what visitors can see. Test the delivered page rather than assuming that your source code is what a crawler received. A /llms.txt file is optional documentation for services that support it; Google says it is not required for Google Search or its generative-AI features.
What “AI-readable” means
LLMs do not receive a special version of your website. A search crawler or other service fetches a response, renders some pages, extracts text and metadata, and builds its own representation. A page is AI-readable when that representation contains the complete primary content, the relationships between sections are clear, and important context is not trapped in an image, an inaccessible control, or an interaction the crawler cannot perform.
- Discoverable: the relevant crawler can fetch the URL and follow its links.
- Complete: the title, answer, qualifications, and supporting content are present in delivered or rendered HTML.
- Structured: headings, lists, tables, landmarks, links, and labels express the document’s hierarchy.
- Consistent: visible copy agrees with the title, canonical URL, metadata, and structured data.
- Accessible: text alternatives, names, roles, and readable instructions make the same information available to assistive technology.
No checklist guarantees that every LLM will index, quote, or cite a page. Google’s recommendations are specifically about Google Search; other services can apply different crawlers and policies.

1. Make the intended content crawlable
Allow fetching and indexing where appropriate
Remove accidental barriers before changing markup. Check that the page is publicly reachable, does not require a login for its primary answer, is not trapped behind a consent dead end, and is not marked noindex by mistake. Use a stable, descriptive URL and a canonical link when several URLs represent the same document. Keep your sitemap and internal links current.

Use Google Search Console’s URL Inspection to see what Googlebot received, including the rendered result. The source you view in a browser is not proof that a crawler saw the same content.
Render JavaScript content deliberately
JavaScript is not automatically disqualifying. Google says it can process JavaScript when it is not blocked, but JavaScript SEO adds another rendering stage and more failure points. Do not block essential scripts or API responses in robots.txt. For important pages, put the title, introduction, headings, and core answer in the initial HTML or server-render the content; use client-side code for enhancement rather than making the entire document depend on a late interaction.
Inspect the rendered DOM and test states that matter: a logged-out visitor, a slow connection, a cookie choice, an empty API response, and an error response. If a paragraph appears only after a click, infinite scroll, or a browser-only API, provide an equivalent crawlable path or server-rendered fallback.
2. Give every document an unambiguous outline
Use one title and one clear main heading
Write an informative <title> and a matching, specific <h1>. A reader or extractor should know the page’s subject without seeing the navigation, a hero image, or a campaign slogan. Use headings for hierarchy, not for visual size: an <h2> starts a major section and an <h3> groups a subsection inside it.
Use semantic landmarks and ordinary elements
Prefer <main>, <article>, <nav>, <section>, <header>, and <footer> where they describe the page. Use paragraphs for prose, lists for sets of items, and tables with header cells for genuinely comparable values. Do not replace meaningful text with styled <div> elements.

The example’s value is the relationship between elements, not its styling. W3C explains that HTML elements provide information about a document’s structural hierarchy.
3. Write content that can be extracted accurately
Answer first, then qualify
Put the definition, decision, or procedure near the start of the relevant section. State who or what you are discussing, use concrete nouns, and resolve pronouns so a quoted paragraph still makes sense outside its original page. Keep one idea per paragraph and use descriptive link text such as “download the accessibility report” instead of “click here.”

Make scanning reveal the logic
Use numbered steps for procedures, bullets for requirements, and short tables for plans, options, or before-and-after values. Explain specialist terms at first use. Identify the authority, date, geography, edition, or conditions whenever a claim depends on them. There is no ideal word count: Google says not to split a useful explanation into artificial fragments or rewrite solely to chase an imagined AI keyword formula.
4. Make images, audio, and controls legible without vision
Provide useful text alternatives
Give an informative image an alt value that conveys its purpose. Mark purely decorative images with an empty alternative so assistive technology can skip them. If a chart contains the evidence for a conclusion, put the data or a concise explanation in nearby text; do not make the image the only copy of an instruction or heading.
Label interactive elements and media
Controls need programmatically determinable names and roles. A search icon should have an accessible label; a form field should have a visible, associated label; a video that carries essential information should have captions or a transcript. WCAG 2.2 (a W3C Recommendation dated 12 December 2024) expresses these requirements as testable success criteria, including text alternatives, headings, labels, readable language, and names and roles.

5. Add structured data that agrees with the page
Choose the type that matches the purpose
Structured data can clarify a page for systems that support it, but it cannot rescue missing or contradictory visible content. Use the schema type that describes the page’s main purpose, include only claims a visitor can see, and keep prices, dates, ratings, authorship, and availability current. JSON-LD is generally the easiest format to maintain because it is separate from presentation markup.

}
</script>
Validate the markup and monitor applicable Search Console enhancement reports. Never place hidden promotional text or unsupported fields in JSON-LD. If the visible headline changes, update the structured data in the same deployment.
6. Treat llms.txt as optional documentation
A root /llms.txt can be a curated index for a downstream service that explicitly supports the convention. It is not a replacement for crawlable HTML, a sitemap, robots controls, semantic structure, or accessible writing. Google’s current guidance says Google Search does not use special llms.txt or AI-only markup as a requirement or ranking shortcut. If you publish one, keep it accurate, link to canonical pages, and measure whether a known consumer actually uses it instead of promising a search benefit.
7. Compare delivery approaches by what the crawler receives
| Approach | Primary content | Structure and metadata | Main risk | Maintenance focus |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Server-rendered HTML | Usually present in the first response | Directly inspectable | Stale output if templates are not updated | Templates, canonicals, cache invalidation |
| JavaScript-rendered interface | Available after successful rendering | Depends on the rendered DOM | Blocked scripts, failed requests, delayed or interaction-only content | Rendering tests, script access, loading and error states |
| Curated Markdown endpoint | Can be concise and extraction-friendly | Must stay consistent with the canonical page | Drift, missing context, or a consumer that ignores it | Generation, canonical links, update checks |
There is no source-supported universal winner. Compare the delivered artifact: completeness of primary content, semantic structure, metadata consistency, accessibility, validation cost, and behavior after updates.
8. Test the delivered result
Automated checks
- Crawl representative URLs and record status codes, redirects, canonicals, indexability, broken links, and duplicate titles.
- Inspect rendered HTML and confirm that the main answer, headings, links, and structured data exist after scripts run.
- Validate JSON-LD and monitor Search Console reports where the chosen type is supported.
- Run accessibility rules for names, roles, labels, headings, contrast, and text alternatives.
Human checks
- Navigate by headings and landmarks with a screen reader or keyboard.
- Read a section in isolation and verify that its subject, scope, and qualifications remain clear.
- Compare visible text with the title, description, canonical URL, and JSON-LD.
- Test slow, blocked, empty, and error states so a failed request does not silently erase the answer.
WCAG notes that conformance combines automated testing with human evaluation. Keep these checks in deployment or content-review workflows; a one-time audit cannot catch later template or API changes.

9. Reliability, performance, and evidence limits
Fast, stable delivery reduces the chance that a renderer times out before receiving the primary content, but speed alone does not make prose understandable. Prioritize the document’s answer over nonessential scripts, lazy-load below-the-fold media without delaying the heading and core copy, and return meaningful error states. Cache carefully so a crawler does not receive an outdated title, price, or availability statement.
A 2022 Association for Computational Linguistics EMNLP Findings paper reported 50% more tasks and 192 times less data in its MiniWoB benchmark comparison. Those are benchmark results, not a guarantee for every website, model, or production workload; test your own delivered pages before drawing performance conclusions.

The crawler sees a blank shell
Likely cause: essential copy is created only after a script, API call, or client-side route succeeds. Fix: inspect rendered HTML, allow required scripts and requests, server-render the primary content, and provide an error state that still explains the page.
Headings or links are missing
Likely cause: text is drawn inside an image, inserted after an interaction, or represented by unlabeled generic elements. Fix: use real heading and link elements, add accessible names, and repeat essential image information as text.

The page works for people but not assistive technology
Likely cause: missing labels, poor heading order, absent text alternatives, or custom controls without names and roles. Fix: test with keyboard and a screen reader, then remediate against the WCAG 2.2 success criteria.
Or skip the browser setup
When you need to inspect what a JavaScript-heavy page actually renders, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—let Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client inspect pages without you building browser automation.
Use the API documented at https://screenshotneo.com/docs/:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/docs -o shot.webp
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://example.com/docs"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://example.com/docs' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element shots, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF options, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, up to 100 URLs per bulk call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. The parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify a switch.
The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing gives two months free, and every feature is on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to inspect rendered pages without paying for failed captures.
