The most direct way to reduce data shared with a font provider is to serve properly licensed font files from your own site, remove remote font requests, and verify the deployed pages no longer fetch fonts from that provider. This limits one third-party data flow; it does not by itself make a site compliant with every privacy law.
What happens when a page uses a remote font service?
A typical web-font integration loads a provider’s stylesheet first. The browser then requests the referenced font files from that provider. That request necessarily exposes network information such as the visitor’s IP address to the service handling the connection.
Google’s Fonts team says its servers necessarily receive IP addresses to transmit Google Fonts and says it does not use that data to create end-user profiles or for advertising. Those are Google’s statements about its service, not an independent audit of every font provider.
Self-hosting changes the destination: the browser retrieves the font from your own origin or infrastructure instead of making a direct browser-to-font-provider request. Other third-party resources on the page—analytics, videos, advertising, CDNs or embedded widgets—remain separate data flows.

Self-hosting is a technical privacy measure, not a legal guarantee
Removing a remote font request can reduce a disclosure, but it does not automatically establish compliance with GDPR or another privacy law. The European Commission describes compliance as an organizational responsibility that an organization must be able to demonstrate.
Regulatory treatment also depends on jurisdiction, facts and current guidance. A Bavarian data-protection authority discussion distinguishes externally hosted and self-hosted fonts and addresses consent context, but it should not be treated here as a settled statement of every court’s holding, damages or geographic scope. For a jurisdiction-specific decision, consult current regulator guidance and qualified legal advice.
Step 1: inventory every font request
Start with the site as it is actually delivered, not just with a theme’s settings screen.

- Search page markup and loaded stylesheets for external font stylesheets, font URLs and CSS imports.
- Check theme, page-builder and plugin settings that can inject typography resources.
- Open browser developer tools, select the Network panel, reload in a clean session and filter for
font,woff,woff2or known font-host domains. - Repeat the check on important templates, including article pages, landing pages, checkout or account pages and mobile layouts. Different templates may load different families or weights.
Step 2: verify the font license
Obtain each font under terms that permit the way you plan to use it. A license may distinguish desktop installation, web embedding, redistribution, modification, territory, number of domains or other conditions. Do not assume that a font visible on a provider’s site can automatically be copied and served from your server.
Keep a record of the exact font files, license text or purchase terms, and any required notices. Vendor implementation guidance can identify licensing boundaries, but the applicable font license controls your use.
Step 3: serve the permitted files from your origin
Place the licensed web-font files on the same origin as the site, or on infrastructure you control under the same privacy and operational policy. Use stable paths and serve modern formats such as WOFF2 when the font supports them, with another permitted format only when your browser-support requirements justify it.

Define each family, style and weight in your own CSS and include a generic fallback:

}Update the path, family name and descriptors to match the files you actually licensed. A fallback family keeps text usable if the web font is delayed or unavailable.

Request or retain only the families, weights and styles used by the design. A page that needs regular and bold text does not need every weight in a font collection.

Subsetting can reduce transferred bytes by retaining only required character ranges. Check coverage against the real audience before removing glyphs: multilingual pages, names, currencies, mathematical symbols and user-generated content can require more than a Latin subset. Google and web.dev documentation describe subset and character-specific delivery as ways to avoid unnecessary font data.
Step 5: choose a deliberate font-display value
The font-display descriptor controls what users see while a web font is unavailable and what happens if it arrives late.
swap: show fallback text promptly and replace it when the web font loads. This prioritizes readability but can produce a visible change in typography.fallback: allow a short period for the web font, then use fallback text if it is not ready; browser timing rules determine the exact behavior.optional: let the browser decide that the web font is not worth using under constrained conditions, reducing the chance of a late visual swap.
There is no universally correct value. Base the choice on the importance of the typeface, acceptable layout shift, connection conditions and whether readable text is more important than matching the final design.

Step 6: remove the old remote integration
Delete external <link> elements, CSS @import rules, provider-generated snippets and theme options that still point to the remote font API. Leaving an unused provider stylesheet in the page can preserve the third-party request even when local files are also present.
Step 7: verify the deployed result
- Publish the changes and open the production URL in a clean browser session, preferably with an empty cache or a private window.
- In the Network panel, confirm that the external font stylesheet and external font-file requests no longer appear.
- Confirm that the local WOFF2 (and any intentionally retained fallback format) requests return successfully and that the response has an appropriate content type.
- Test representative pages, templates, languages and viewport sizes. Look for missing glyphs, incorrect weights, synthesized italics and unexpected fallback text.
- Recheck after theme, plugin, design-system or content changes, because a component can reintroduce a remote font dependency.
This verification establishes what the deployed page loads at the time you test it; it is not a claim that every site or configuration behaves identically.
Self-hosting versus a remote font service

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “Google Fonts” means no request is made: the browser still contacts the font service when the stylesheet and files are remote.
- Copying files without checking terms: technical access is not permission to redistribute.
- Removing glyphs too aggressively: a smaller file is not useful if readers see missing characters.
- Leaving an unused import behind: one forgotten stylesheet can keep the external request alive.
- Promising a speed improvement: measure request timing, bytes, caching and visible loading behavior on representative pages.
- Treating local hosting as a complete privacy program: audit all third-party resources and document the site’s broader data practices.
What a defensible rollout looks like
A privacy-focused font change has four verifiable outcomes: the files are licensed for the intended use; the CSS points to your origin; the selected subsets and weights cover the site’s audience; and production network traces show no unwanted font-provider requests. Keep records of the files, licenses, CSS changes and verification date so future updates can be checked rather than assumed.
