Yes—eligible users can now make and receive voice calls directly in WhatsApp Web, without installing WhatsApp Desktop. Meta announced browser calling on July 28, 2026, and says it is rolling out gradually, so the call controls may not yet appear for every account. Meta’s announcement also covers group calls and other calling features.

What you need
- An active WhatsApp account and access to the phone or device used to link it.
- A computer connected to the internet and an up-to-date browser.
- A working microphone, plus speakers or headphones.
- Browser and operating-system permission to use the microphone.
WhatsApp has not published a definitive browser-version compatibility list in its announcement, so use a current browser rather than relying on a particular version number. The browser itself needs an internet connection. Link the account from your phone first; do not assume the phone can remain permanently offline during Web Calling.
Link your account to WhatsApp Web
- On your computer, open the official address: web.whatsapp.com.
- Wait for the QR code or device-linking prompt.
- On your phone, open WhatsApp and go to Linked devices.
- Tap Link a device and authenticate if asked.
- Scan the QR code on your computer, then wait for your chats to load.
Menu wording or placement can vary slightly by phone and app version. Make sure you are on the official WhatsApp site before scanning a code.

- In WhatsApp Web, open the chat with the person you want to call.
- Look in the chat header for the handset (voice-call) icon and select it.
- If your browser asks to use the microphone, choose Allow.
- Wait for the other person to answer. Use the in-call controls to mute or end the call; available controls can vary with the interface.
You do not need camera permission for an audio-only call. If the handset icon is missing, the feature may not have reached your account yet; see troubleshooting below.

Answer an incoming call
When Web Calling is available, an incoming call can appear in WhatsApp Web while you are signed in. Select Answer to accept or Decline to reject it, and allow microphone access if prompted. Whether you receive a desktop notification depends on browser and operating-system notification settings, and a sleeping computer or closed browser should not be expected to ring.
Call from the Calls tab
If a Calls tab is visible in your WhatsApp Web interface, you can use it to review call history or choose a recent contact or call entry. You can also start from a contact chat and select the handset icon. The tab and its controls may not be available to every account during the gradual rollout.

Make a group voice call
Meta says Web Calling supports group audio as well as one-to-one audio, video calling, and call links. If group-call controls are available in your account, open the group chat and use its call option. You may also be able to join through a WhatsApp call link. For a link, the host can enable Require approval to join, which places joiners in a waiting room until approved. See Meta’s feature announcement for details. A definitive participant maximum is not established by the cited official announcement, so do not rely on an unverified number.

Other Web Calling features
Meta lists video calls, screen sharing, reactions, a Calls tab with history and favorites, and the ability to transfer a call between a phone, tablet, WhatsApp Web, and WhatsApp Desktop without hanging up. Look for transfer controls during an active call; their exact label and position may differ. Meta says calls are end-to-end encrypted, have no time limit, and carry no WhatsApp calling fee. Your internet provider or mobile-data plan may still charge for connectivity.

WhatsApp Web voice calls not working

If basic checks do not help, try WhatsApp Desktop or make the call from your phone. Older guides saying WhatsApp Web cannot call are outdated after the July 2026 browser-calling rollout, but gradual availability means a missing control is not necessarily a setup mistake.

WhatsApp Web, Desktop, or phone?

Keep your account and computer safe
- Use only web.whatsapp.com; never scan a QR code from a suspicious site.
- On a shared computer, do not leave WhatsApp signed in. Sign out when finished.
- On your phone, review Linked devices and remove computers you no longer recognize or use.
- Grant microphone access only to sites you trust. Consider removing the permission after using a shared computer.
- End-to-end encryption protects the call content, but it does not make a shared, compromised, or monitored computer safe. Use WhatsApp account security features, including two-step verification if available.
