Choose the fix that matches what looks too small. Gmail uses different controls for the page you read, the text you write, and the default style of new messages.

Make the entire Gmail page larger on a computer
When the inbox, message list, reading pane, labels, and controls are all difficult to read, use your browser’s page zoom. Open Gmail, then press Ctrl + + on Windows, Linux, or ChromeOS, or Command + + on a Mac. Repeat until the page is comfortable. Chrome’s instructions are documented at Google Chrome Help.
Page zoom enlarges the complete page, including text, images, buttons, and other interface elements. Less content will fit on screen, so you may need to scroll more.
Use Chrome’s menu instead
- Open Gmail in Chrome.
- Click the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
- In Zoom, click the plus control.
Zoom Gmail without changing other websites
Chrome can remember a zoom level for one site. To manage it, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → Zoom levels, then remove or change Gmail’s entry. This is also the place to check if Gmail suddenly became huge.

Chrome offers a font-size setting, but Google notes that some websites do not allow browser-only font resizing. Page zoom is the more reliable choice for Gmail.
Enlarge text while writing or replying
This changes the message content, not the Gmail interface or incoming mail.
- On a computer, click Compose or open a reply.
- Click Formatting options at the bottom of the compose window.
- Select the words or paragraph you want to change.
- Open the font-size control and choose a larger size.
Select existing text before choosing a size so the change applies predictably. Gmail documents the formatting toolbar at Gmail Help.
Keyboard option
Google’s Gmail screen-reader documentation lists Ctrl + Shift + plus on Windows or Linux and Command + Shift + plus on Mac for larger text; the corresponding smaller-text commands use the hyphen key. These commands are an accessibility and keyboard option, and their behavior depends on the compose state. See Gmail keyboard shortcuts for screen readers.

If the size control is missing
- Expand the collapsed formatting toolbar.
- Make sure you are composing or replying, not simply reading.
- Check whether Plain text mode is enabled; rich-text controls are unavailable there.
Set a larger default for new desktop emails
- Open Gmail and click Settings.
- Click See all settings.
- Stay on the General tab and scroll to Default text style.
- Choose the larger text style in the preview box.
- Scroll to the bottom and click Save Changes.
This setting starts new outgoing messages with your chosen rich-text style. It does not enlarge the inbox, received messages, or older sent mail. Pasted text, signatures, replies, and plain-text messages may retain their own formatting, and recipients’ mail apps or accessibility settings can render the message differently. The setting is described in Google’s Gmail formatting help.
Make Gmail larger on Android
Google directs Android Gmail users to the device’s system controls rather than a separate Gmail-only font-size setting.
- Open Settings and search for Font size.
- Move the font-size slider to the right.
- If buttons, icons, or the layout are still too small, search Settings for Display size and increase it too.
- Reopen Gmail.
Android’s exact labels vary by manufacturer and Android version. Font size changes lettering; Display size changes more interface elements and therefore reduces how much content fits on screen. Google says some apps do not fully respond to font-size changes, and its current accessibility controls can reach up to 200% on supported devices. Change text in an Android message
- Tap Compose and enter text.
- Double-tap the text to select it.
- Tap Format.
- Choose the available formatting control, including font-related options where your app exposes them.
Make Gmail larger on an iPhone or iPad
Use iOS system text controls, but treat the result as device- and app-dependent rather than a guaranteed Gmail-specific setting.

- Try Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size.
- For larger accessibility sizes, use Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text.
The Gmail app may not enlarge every screen or support every point on the iOS size scale. If it remains difficult to read, try iOS screen magnification or open Gmail in a browser and use the browser’s available zoom controls. Google Community discussions about iPhone Gmail font size are not definitive; Google labels Community material as potentially unverified or outdated, as shown in this discussion.
Gmail in a mobile browser
Gmail opened in Chrome on Android has another scaling layer separate from the Gmail app and Android settings. Try the browser’s own text-scaling or zoom control first. If that is insufficient, adjust Android Font size or Display size. Exact Chrome-for-Android menu wording varies, so do not assume that instructions for the desktop browser match your phone.

You changed the wrong kind of setting
Default text style affects messages you write. It cannot enlarge Gmail’s inbox or a received message; use browser page zoom on a computer or device accessibility settings on mobile.

A sender may have selected a small size, used fixed HTML dimensions, or inserted text inside an image. Zooming the page or using system magnification is more dependable for reading than trying to rewrite the original message.

Plain-text mode is enabled
Plain-text mode removes rich formatting controls. Turn it off in the compose window if you need font-size choices.
Everything became too large
- On a computer, check Chrome’s Gmail-specific entry under Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → Zoom levels.
- On Android, review both Font size and Display size.
- On iPhone or iPad, review Text Size and Larger Text.
Accessibility alternatives
If larger text alone is not enough, combine page or system scaling with your platform’s magnification and screen-reader tools. Google’s Android accessibility guidance includes magnification and text-scaling options; see Gmail accessibility help for Android. Remember that system-wide display changes can affect every app, while browser page zoom can be limited to Gmail.
The practical rule
Use browser or device settings to enlarge what you see while reading Gmail. Use Gmail’s formatting controls to enlarge text you send, and use Default text style only when every new desktop message should start larger.
