To make SelectPdf resemble the ASPX page users see in a browser, reproduce the browser’s conditions: convert the same URL, use the same authenticated session, set the internal viewport to the page’s real layout width, keep Screen CSS unless print styling is intentional, select Blink or Chromium for modern front-end code, and wait for deferred controls, images and scripts. Then verify that every stylesheet, font, image and API request is reachable by the converter.
Why an ASPX page changes when SelectPdf renders it
SelectPdf does not copy the pixels from your desktop browser. Its internal browser requests the ASPX URL, evaluates HTML and JavaScript, applies responsive breakpoints and loads referenced resources before producing a PDF. A different viewport, rendering engine, CSS media type, cookie set or load deadline can therefore change spacing, controls and content.
SelectPdf’s documented default internal width is 1024 pixels. That is often different from the width at which your Web Forms page was designed or tested. Responsive CSS may switch navigation, grid columns or form layouts at that breakpoint. The converter also has different JavaScript and CSS capabilities depending on its engine.

Use a configuration sequence that mirrors the browser
1. Convert the URL, not an incomplete HTML fragment
When the page is available at a URL, use ConvertUrl(url). SelectPdf can then request linked CSS, JavaScript, images and fonts in the same way a browser does. If you must supply an HTML string, use ConvertHtmlString(html, baseUrl); the base URL is required for relative references such as ~/Content/site.css-style output that has already been resolved to relative paths.

2. Match the layout viewport
Set WebPageWidth to the width that produced the desired browser layout. Use the page’s CSS breakpoints and the browser’s measured content width, not automatically the physical paper width. Set WebPageHeight only if the design depends on a fixed viewport height; otherwise, an artificial height can alter scripts that inspect window.innerHeight.
For example, a page captured at 1440 CSS pixels should start with WebPageWidth = 1440. Compare the resulting PDF with a browser screenshot at the same CSS viewport before changing margins or fonts.
3. Select an engine that supports the page
WebKit is SelectPdf’s default and supports traditional CSS and ES5 JavaScript. Use Blink for modern CSS and ES6 JavaScript. Chromium is the appropriate choice when the page depends on current HTML5/CSS3 behavior or ES2020+ JavaScript; SelectPdf documentation describes Chromium as tracking a current Chromium release and supporting authenticated pages with LoginOptions.

4. Keep Screen media unless print CSS is the target
The normal browser view uses screen styles. Set CssMediaType to CssMediaType.Screen for that appearance. Enable use_css_print or the equivalent CssMediaType.Print only when the PDF is intentionally defined by @media print. Print rules commonly hide navigation, change colors, remove backgrounds or alter widths, so enabling them can make a correct conversion look unlike the browser.
5. Give deferred work time to finish
ASP.NET Web Forms controls may populate after the initial response through JavaScript, callbacks or data binding. Images can be lazy-loaded, and charts may be drawn after a timer. Increase MinPageLoadTime so SelectPdf does not convert immediately after the first document load, and set MaxPageLoadTime high enough for server and browser work. The API reference documents a one-second default minimum, a 30-second default maximum and an allowed maximum of 120 seconds.
For deterministic pages, prefer a post-load script or an explicit startup/manual signal when your installed package supports it. A fixed delay is a useful fallback, but it should be long enough for the slowest expected data request rather than chosen from a fast local run.

The following pattern combines the main fidelity controls. Property and enum names can vary by SelectPdf package generation; check the SDK reference installed in your project.

pdf.Close();The two-second minimum and 60-second maximum are starting values, not guarantees. SelectPdf’s published conversion-delay example uses a two-second minimum and 30-second maximum. Measure your page’s actual data and image latency, then tighten the values once the output is stable.
Preserve ASP.NET Forms Authentication
A page can load its main ASPX response while its child resources remain unauthorized. Copy the ASP.NET Forms Authentication cookie into converter.Options.HttpCookies, as shown above, and ensure that the cookie is valid for the host and path used in url.
CSS, JavaScript, images and fonts must also be reachable. SelectPdf’s authentication guidance warns that external resources “must be placed into a location where anonymous access is granted, otherwise they will have the same authentication problems and they will not be rendered.” In practice, either allow the converter’s authenticated session to request protected assets or expose only the required static assets through an appropriate access policy. A missing font or stylesheet can create a spacing difference even when the page itself appears authenticated.
Make resource URLs and deployment architecture reliable
Relative paths and base URLs
If you convert an HTML string without a base URL, relative CSS, image and script references have no reliable origin. Use ConvertHtmlString(html, baseUrl), where baseUrl is the page directory or absolute site URL from which those resources can be fetched.

Process architecture
A 32-bit/64-bit mismatch between the application process and the installed SelectPdf package can produce BadImageFormatException. Align the process architecture, native SelectPdf package and deployment target. Confirm this on the server, not only on a development workstation.
Network and certificate access
The conversion host must resolve the site name, connect to its HTTPS endpoint and retrieve every required resource. Internal DNS names, firewall rules, client-certificate requirements and development-only certificates can make the converter see a different page than your desktop browser.
How to diagnose a mismatch in the right order
- Freeze the input. Use the exact URL, query string, user identity and data state that you compared in the browser.
- Compare viewport widths. Capture the browser at the same CSS pixel width as
WebPageWidth. Check responsive breakpoints before changing PDF page size. - Check the engine. If modern JavaScript, CSS Grid, newer selectors or HTML5 elements fail, switch from WebKit to Blink or Chromium.
- Check media. Confirm that Screen is selected unless the expected design is explicitly the print stylesheet.
- Check authentication. Verify the Forms Authentication cookie and independently test protected CSS, script, font and image URLs.
- Check timing. Increase
MinPageLoadTime, inspect deferred network calls and use a post-load or manual signal where possible. - Check deployment. Resolve architecture, DNS, TLS and outbound firewall problems on the conversion server.

Performance, reliability and cost considerations
Wider viewports, Chromium and long waits can increase CPU time and memory use. Reusing a stable converter configuration and avoiding unnecessary fixed delays helps throughput. Do not reduce the wait merely to improve averages if it causes occasional missing controls; a deterministic completion signal is more reliable.
There is no published independent fidelity percentage for SelectPdf, so “pixel-perfect” is not an evidence-based promise. Validate the specific ASPX page with its real fonts, images, scripts, authentication and data state. The meaningful acceptance test is a browser capture and PDF comparison at the intended viewport and engine, including slow and logged-out failure paths.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing PDF paper size fix a responsive ASPX layout?
Usually not. Responsive layout is selected by the internal browser viewport, so set WebPageWidth first; paper size controls the output page after rendering.
Should every page use Chromium?
No. Chromium is useful for modern HTML5, CSS3 and ES2020+ JavaScript, while simpler legacy pages may render adequately with WebKit or Blink. Test the specific page.
Can a longer timeout guarantee complete JavaScript rendering?
No. It only gives work more time. A post-load script or explicit completion signal is more deterministic when the page supports one.
