Make one to ten flattened JPEG, JPG, or PNG images at a pixel size Apple accepts for your app’s platform and display class. In App Store Connect, open the app version, choose a language, and drag the screenshots into the App Previews and Screenshots area. If the interface is the same across device sizes and localizations, Apple says you can provide only the highest-resolution required screenshots and let App Store Connect scale them down.
Exact dimensions depend on platform, device class, and orientation, so check Apple’s current screenshot specifications before exporting. App previews are optional.
Choose the platform, display class, and orientation
First decide which platform the app supports: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, Apple Vision Pro, or Apple Watch. Then decide whether the app should be shown in portrait, landscape, or both. Screenshots must match the relevant display class and orientation; a single generic size chart is not reliable across device generations.
Apple’s current table lists multiple accepted dimensions even within a display class. For example, its listed iPhone sizes include:

These are examples from Apple’s table, not a complete compatibility list. Check the full current specification for the exact size required for your target device class, including iPad, Mac, TV, Vision Pro, and Watch.
Capture screens that explain the app
Capture from a supported device or simulator, or render the screens in a design workflow. The end result—not the capture method—must meet Apple’s file and dimension requirements. Show the app’s real core experience with clear, representative UI states. Avoid exposing real account information or other private data.
Plan the sequence before exporting
- Lead with the app’s clearest value proposition.
- Show the main workflow in a natural order.
- Use later images for features that distinguish the app or answer likely buyer questions.
- Keep the sequence consistent across localized versions.
App Store Connect presents screenshots in the order you upload them. If you add an app preview, Apple places previews before screenshots. Review the order and the actual product-page presentation before submitting.
Export files that App Store Connect accepts
Apple accepts one to ten screenshots per supported device display size and language. Each image must be a JPEG, JPG, or PNG, and it cannot have an alpha channel or transparency. Export flattened images, then verify their pixel dimensions, orientation, and format against Apple’s specification table.

- Use the exact pixel dimensions Apple lists for the relevant platform and display class.
- Check that portrait images are portrait and landscape images are landscape.
- Confirm that PNG files do not retain transparency and that all images are flattened.
- Keep each device-size and language set within the one-to-ten screenshot limit.
Do you need a separate set for every iPhone and iPad?
Not necessarily. Apple’s guidance says: “If your app’s user interface is the same across multiple device sizes and localizations, provide only the highest resolution screenshots required. They automatically scale down to smaller device sizes.” This can reduce duplicate uploads when the interface genuinely looks the same at smaller sizes. If layouts or content differ across devices or languages, prepare the appropriate sets instead. For an iPad app, consult Apple’s current table for the required 13-inch class when the app runs on iPad.
Upload screenshots in App Store Connect
- Sign in to App Store Connect and open Apps.
- Select your app.
- Open the app version under the platform you are preparing.
- Choose the language for the screenshots.
- Drag the screenshot files into the App Previews and Screenshots wells in the intended order.
- Open View All Sizes in Media Manager if you need other device sizes, iMessage or watchOS assets, or additional localized sets.
- Check the displayed assets and order before submitting the version.
Apple documents screenshot uploads for app-version statuses that include Prepare for Submission and several rejection states; available actions depend on the version’s current status. See the upload guide for the current workflow.
Use Apple’s scaling or provide more device-size sets
The simplest approach is to upload the highest-resolution screenshots required when the app’s UI is consistent and let App Store Connect scale them down. This avoids maintaining near-duplicate sets. Use additional sizes when the interface changes materially on a different display, or when you need to control precisely how the listing appears for that display size.
Localization is a separate decision from device sizing. Choose the language in App Store Connect before adding the relevant images, and use the same narrative sequence in each language. Media Manager is where you can access additional localized sets and sizes.

Add app previews only if video helps
An app preview is optional; screenshots alone are valid. Apple permits up to three previews for each supported device size and language. Accepted containers include MOV, M4V, and MP4 with Apple-supported codecs. You choose a poster frame, and processing can take up to 24 hours. Check Apple’s upload guide for the supported video and processing details before producing a preview.
Automate uploads with the App Store Connect API
For repeated releases, many locales, or numerous display targets, Apple’s API represents screenshots as sets tied to a locale and display target. The documented workflow is not a single file upload: create or use the appropriate set, reserve an asset, upload the reserved asset (potentially in multiple parts), commit the upload, then verify that Apple processed it.
- Identify the locale and display target for the screenshot set.
- Create or locate that screenshot set through the API.
- Reserve an asset and obtain the upload instructions for the file.
- Upload the data, splitting it into parts if the returned instructions require that.
- Commit the upload to complete the asset transfer.
- Verify processing status and confirm the asset appears in the expected set.
Apple warns that missing required assets can cause an error at submission time. Its App Screenshot Sets API and asset-upload documentation describe the relevant resource and upload sequence. Automation should check processing results rather than assume that a successful transfer means the screenshot is ready for submission.

App Store Connect rejects the image or does not accept the drop
Check file type, transparency, orientation, and exact pixel dimensions first. The accepted formats are JPEG, JPG, and PNG, and images cannot have alpha channels or transparency. Compare the image against the correct platform and display-class entry in Apple’s specification, rather than relying on an older size guide.
A required screenshot is missing at submission
Review the app’s platform and required display targets in App Store Connect, then check the relevant size sets in Media Manager. Apple’s API documentation warns that missing required assets can trigger a submission-time error; confirm each expected locale and display-target set has processed assets.

The screenshot appears under the wrong language or size
Return to the app version’s screenshot area, select the intended language, and inspect the sets through View All Sizes in Media Manager. Verify that each image was added to the correct locale and display target.
An app preview is still processing
Preview processing may take up to 24 hours. Confirm that the container and codec are supported, that a poster frame is set, and check the processing state again after Apple’s stated window.
A transferred API asset is not visible or usable
Follow the full reservation, upload, commit, and verification sequence. A successful transfer alone does not establish that Apple has processed the asset; check its processing state and that it is associated with the intended screenshot set.
