To make sad lo-fi music with AI, prompt for a restrained instrumental built around warm, slightly worn keys, soft drums, mellow bass and a melancholy chord progression. Then edit the result by removing busy parts and keeping the mix spacious. The tools below can generate or shape music, but their supplied feature details do not confirm a dedicated sad lo-fi genre setting, so check each tool’s current options before relying on one.

Build The Track In Steps
- Describe the feeling and scene. Start with an instrumental prompt such as: “Sad lo-fi instrumental for a quiet rainy evening; intimate, reflective and warm, with a slow unhurried feel.” Treat “sad lo-fi” as a creative direction, not a guaranteed preset.
- Name the musical parts. Add specific roles: “soft, slightly dusty drum beat; mellow bass; warm electric-piano chords; a sparse, wistful melody; subtle tape-like texture.” These are prompt ideas. Check whether the tool offers those instruments or textures before expecting them in the result.
- Keep the arrangement restrained. Ask for space between phrases, gentle dynamics and no dramatic drop or dense percussion. If the first result feels too cheerful, try wording such as “more introspective harmony, fewer bright melodic notes, softer drums.”
- Generate an instrumental. Choose instrumental mode where available, or state clearly that you want no vocals. InsMelo lists an instrumental mode; the other tools’ supplied details do not establish a specific vocal-off control, so check their current settings.
- Listen for the mood, not just the label. On phone speakers, listen for whether the melody and chords feel subdued, the drums stay gentle, and the bass does not crowd the keys. If a part distracts, revise the prompt to make it quieter, simpler or less frequent.
- Refine parts when the tool supports it. In Beat Shaper, use the listed piano-roll editing and mood or energy controls to adjust generated elements. In Soundverse AI Beat Maker, use its browser multitrack studio and exported stems or MIDI for further editing. The supplied details do not confirm that either tool has a lo-fi-specific effect, so check for texture controls in the product.
- Export for your next step. Choose an export format that matches what you plan to do with the track: Beat Shaper lists MIDI, WAV, MP3, stems and DAW project options; Soundverse lists WAV mixes, stems and MIDI; InsMelo lists MP3, WAV, MIDI and stems. Confirm which formats your chosen plan currently allows.
Prompt Variations To Try
- More lonely: “Sparse sad lo-fi instrumental, soft keys playing a wistful melody, gentle dusty drums, mellow bass, lots of space, no vocals.”
- More comforting: “Melancholy but warm lo-fi instrumental, mellow electric-piano chords, brushed-feeling soft beat, rounded bass, intimate and calm, no vocals.”
- More minimal: “Quiet reflective lo-fi beat, simple minor-sounding keyboard motif, understated drums, soft bass, restrained arrangement, no big transitions, no vocals.”
These are wording suggestions, not verified presets or guaranteed results. If a generator ignores a detail, try a shorter prompt that names the mood, the main instruments and the arrangement in plain language.
