On iPadOS 26, touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen, tap Edit, choose Customize, then tap Large Apps. This switches between the standard and larger icon presentations. In large mode, app names disappear.
If the entire display is enlarged or only part of the Home Screen is visible, use the Accessibility Zoom fix instead.
Make iPad Home Screen icons bigger
- Go to the iPad Home Screen.
- Touch and hold an empty area between the icons until the icons jiggle.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Customize.
- Tap Large Apps.
Apple’s current iPad documentation describes this as a standard-versus-large presentation control, not a slider. Large mode makes the icons more prominent, but it also removes the app-name labels beneath them. See Apple’s iPad Home Screen customization guide.
Make the icons smaller again
Repeat the same steps:
Home Screen > touch and hold the background > Edit > Customize > Large Apps

Tap the Large Apps control again to return to the standard presentation, where app names are shown. On iPad, Apple’s documentation refers to the control as Large Apps; it does not necessarily display a separate button labelled “Small.”
Can you choose an exact icon size?
Not through Apple’s documented iPad Home Screen control. It switches between the standard and larger presentation, rather than offering a percentage slider or several precisely adjustable size levels. Do not expect to set each icon to a different size.
Why did my iPad icons suddenly become huge?
There are two different possibilities:
- Large Apps is enabled: Icons remain arranged normally, are fully visible, and app labels disappear. Change the setting through Edit > Customize > Large Apps.
- Accessibility Zoom is enabled: The entire display is magnified, icons may look extremely large, and only part of the Home Screen may be visible.
For accidental magnification, double-tap the screen with three fingers to zoom back out. Then open Settings > Accessibility > Zoom and turn Zoom off. Apple documents this recovery gesture and the Zoom setting in its Zoom troubleshooting instructions.

Accessibility Zoom is different from the Home Screen icon-size control. Zoom magnifies the display, while Large Apps changes the Home Screen’s icon presentation.
What if Customize is missing?
Try these checks:
- Touch and hold an empty background area, not an app icon.
- Wait until the icons jiggle before tapping Edit.
- Swipe to another Home Screen page and try again if there is little empty space.
- Check Settings > Accessibility > Zoom if the screen is clipped or unusually magnified.
- Lock and unlock the iPad, or restart it, if the Home Screen editor does not appear.
- Confirm that the iPad is running a recent iPadOS release that supports the current customization interface.
Menu names and feature availability can vary by iPad model, software version, language, country, or region. A work- or school-managed iPad may also have restrictions. Apple’s iPad personalization documentation notes that availability can vary.
If you cannot open Settings because of Zoom
First use the three-finger double-tap to zoom out. Once the interface is usable, go to Settings > Accessibility > Zoom and disable Zoom.

If that still is not possible, Apple also documents configuring accessibility settings through Finder on a Mac, or through iTunes on older Mac and Windows setups. Treat that as a fallback; most accidental Zoom activations can be reversed with the three-finger gesture.
Does changing icon size enlarge widgets?
Not necessarily. The Large Apps option primarily changes app icons and their labels. Widgets have their own available formats and are resized or rearranged separately. The current Home Screen customization screen also includes visual treatments such as light, dark, clear, and tinted appearances, but those options are distinct from widget layout.
Other ways to make the Home Screen easier to use
If the real problem is finding apps quickly rather than seeing larger icons, reorganizing the Home Screen may help:

- Move frequently used apps to an easy-to-reach position.
- Place important apps in the Dock.
- Keep fewer apps on a page to reduce visual clutter.
- Use separate Home Screen pages for work, entertainment, or other tasks.
- Move widgets and apps into arrangements that leave useful empty space.

If the layout is disorganized, you can use Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout. However, this is not an icon-size setting. It removes created folders and alphabetically arranges downloaded apps after the built-in apps. Use it only if you are prepared to rebuild your Home Screen organization.

Large Apps, text size, and Zoom are different settings
Large Apps changes the Home Screen icon presentation. Text-size settings affect readable text in supported areas and apps. Accessibility Zoom magnifies the display. If labels or text are hard to read everywhere, changing icon size alone may not address the underlying problem.

Why did my app names disappear?
That is expected when Large Apps is enabled. Return to the standard presentation through Home Screen > Edit > Customize, then tap Large Apps again.
Will resetting the Home Screen make the icons smaller?
No. Reset Home Screen Layout reorganizes apps and removes created folders; it is not an icon-size control.
Do these steps work on every iPad?
The documented menu path applies to current iPadOS, including iPadOS 26. Older software, iPad models, regions, languages, and managed devices may show different options.
