Microsoft Edge can use Google instead of Bing for searches entered in the address bar. Open Settings and more (…) → Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Search and connected services → Address bar and search, then select Google under Search engine used in the address bar. To make the large search field on a new tab follow the same choice, set Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar to Address bar.
Change Edge’s address-bar search engine to Google
These labels describe the current desktop Edge settings path. Microsoft’s support instructions cover Windows 11, Windows 10 and Windows 8.1; Google documents the same process for Microsoft Edge 79 and later. See Microsoft’s instructions and Google’s Edge guidance.
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Select Settings and more (…) in the upper-right corner, then choose Settings.
- Open Privacy, search, and services.
- Expand Search and connected services.
- Select Address bar and search.
- Under Search engine used in the address bar, choose Google.
The address bar (sometimes called the omnibox) is the field at the top of the browser. This setting controls searches submitted there; it does not remove Bing from Edge.

On many builds, entering edge://settings/search in the address bar opens the same settings page directly. Internal URLs and labels can change, so use the visible menu path if the shortcut does not work.

Make searches from a new tab use Google
Edge’s New Tab page has a separate, large search field. If that field is configured to use Search box, it can continue sending searches to Bing even after Google is selected for the address bar.
- Remain in Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Search and connected services → Address bar and search.
- Find Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar.
- Select Address bar.
With this choice, a query entered in the New Tab field is routed through the provider selected for the address bar. Choosing Search box preserves Edge’s New Tab search experience but may continue using Bing. Google recommends the Address bar option for users who want Google to handle New Tab searches.

Test both search routes
- Click the top address bar, type a query and press Enter. The results should open on Google.
- Open a new tab, type a different query in its search field and press Enter. It should also open on Google after you select Address bar for New Tab searches.
If the first test opens Google but the second opens Bing, the default provider is set correctly; only the New Tab routing choice still needs changing.
Search engine, Home button and startup page are different settings

Set Google as the Home button destination (optional)
This does not change the search provider. In Edge, open Settings and more (…) → Settings → Start, home, and new tab page. Enable Show home button on the toolbar, choose the option for a custom site, enter Google’s homepage and save. Labels can vary by Edge build; the procedure is illustrated by Pureinfotech’s current Windows guide.

Set Google as the startup page (optional)
In Start, home, and new tab page, find the startup behavior controls, choose the option to open a custom page, add Google’s homepage and save. This changes what opens at launch, not which provider processes address-bar searches.
If Google is not listed
Edge can discover compatible websites that support OpenSearch. Microsoft says the provider may appear after you use it for a search, so opening Google’s homepage alone may not be enough.

- Visit Google in Edge.
- Use the address bar to perform a Google search.
- Return to Settings → Privacy, search, and services → Search and connected services → Address bar and search.
- Recheck Search engine used in the address bar and select Google if it now appears.
If it is still missing, restart Edge and search Settings for search or address bar and search; wording differs between releases. Do not install a search-fixer utility or edit profile files as a first step.
If Edge keeps switching back to Bing
Check New Tab routing
Confirm that Search on new tabs uses search box or address bar is set to Address bar. A Microsoft Q&A response describes this as a common reason New Tab searches continue opening Bing: Microsoft Q&A.

Check the active Edge profile
Edge profiles can have separate settings. Make sure you changed the profile you actually use, then close and reopen Edge and verify the selection again.
Consider organizational management
On a work or school computer, an administrator may enforce a search provider. If Google repeatedly disappears or Bing returns after every change, contact your organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to bypass the policy. The Microsoft Q&A discussion references policies such as DefaultSearchProviderEnabled and DefaultSearchProviderSearchURL, but that community response is not a definitive policy diagnosis.
Can you use another search engine?
Yes. Edge supports compatible websites that expose OpenSearch metadata. Search with the provider from the address bar first, then revisit Address bar and search and choose it when Edge lists it. The same method can be used for providers such as DuckDuckGo when they are available in your build. Manually constructing a search URL is normally unnecessary.
Platform and extension limits
The documented menu path is for desktop Edge, with Microsoft listing Windows 11, Windows 10 and Windows 8.1 and Google specifying Edge 79 or later. Do not assume identical labels on macOS, Linux, Android or iPhone without checking that platform’s current Edge release. An extension is not required for the standard change.
