To make PDFs open in Google Chrome, set Chrome as the default app for .pdf files in your operating system. If you also want PDF links to open in Chrome tabs instead of downloading, change Chrome’s separate PDF setting. These are two different controls: making Chrome your default web browser does not automatically make it the default app for local PDF files.
Set Chrome as the default PDF reader in Windows
The quickest method works from a PDF file already on your computer:
- In File Explorer, right-click a PDF.
- Select Open with, then Choose another app.
- Select Google Chrome. If it is not listed, choose the option to find another app and check that Chrome is installed.
- Turn on Always use this app to open .pdf files.
- Select OK.
Double-click a different PDF to check that it opens in Chrome. You can also set the association through Settings → Apps → Default apps: search for .pdf, select the current app, and choose Chrome. Labels can differ slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Google’s instructions for setting Chrome as the default browser use Windows default-app settings, but browser defaults and PDF associations are distinct: Google’s Chrome default-browser help.
Choose what Chrome does with PDF links
The Windows setting controls PDFs opened from File Explorer. Chrome has a separate setting for PDF links on websites. In desktop Chrome, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Additional content settings → PDF documents. You can also try chrome://settings/content/pdfDocuments; menu labels and locations may change between Chrome releases.

- Choose Open PDFs in Chrome to view supported PDF links in a browser tab.
- Choose Download PDFs to save them first. The operating system’s
.pdfdefault then determines which app opens the downloaded file.
Some sites force a download, so Chrome’s preference cannot always make their PDFs open in a tab. Chrome’s PDF and enterprise documentation describes its built-in viewer, downloads, and administrator controls.
Set Chrome as the default PDF app on macOS
- In Finder, select a PDF and Control-click or right-click it.
- Select Get Info.
- Under Open with, choose Google Chrome.
- Select Change All, then confirm.
Choosing Chrome without Change All changes the app for that file only. Apple’s file association controls are also described in Adobe’s instructions for choosing a default PDF application.

Set Chrome as the default PDF app on Linux
The exact steps depend on your desktop environment. Usually, right-click a PDF, open Properties or Open With, select Chrome, and choose the option to make it the default for PDF files. If Chrome does not appear, check that it is installed and use your desktop’s default-app settings to associate .pdf files with it. The operating system controls this association; setting Chrome as the default browser is a separate step.

ChromeOS may open PDFs in Gallery by default. To use Chrome’s viewer, open the Files app, right-click a PDF, choose Open with → Change default, then select View. Google notes that Gallery can annotate PDFs, while Chrome PDF Viewer does not offer the same text-annotation features. If markup matters, keep Gallery as the default or open the file with Gallery when needed: Google’s Chromebook PDF help.

Test both kinds of PDF
- Open a local PDF from File Explorer, Finder, or your Linux file manager. It should launch in Chrome.
- Click a PDF link in Chrome. It should open in a tab if Open PDFs in Chrome is selected and the site allows in-browser viewing; otherwise it may download.
An attachment preview in Gmail, Outlook, or another web app may be handled by that service rather than by the operating system. Download the attachment and open the saved file to test the system-wide PDF association.
If PDFs still open in another app
- Chrome opens website PDFs but not double-clicked files: Chrome’s internal viewer is working, but the operating system’s
.pdfassociation is still set to another app. Repeat the Windows, macOS, or Linux steps above. - PDF links download: Check Chrome’s PDF documents setting and select Open PDFs in Chrome. A website can still force downloads.
- Acrobat opens downloaded files automatically: Check Acrobat’s separate auto-open preference and any Acrobat browser-extension settings. Adobe explains that these controls are distinct from the system default app: Acrobat’s PDF auto-open help.
- Chrome is missing from the app picker: Launch Chrome to confirm it is installed, then try the operating system’s default-app settings. If needed, get Chrome from Google’s official download page.
- The setting is unavailable or keeps reverting: A work or school administrator may manage the file association or Chrome’s PDF behavior. Google documents policies that can require downloads or the internal viewer in managed environments.
- A particular file will not display: Password-protected PDFs require the password; damaged files may fail to open. Scanned PDFs may be image-only, without searchable or selectable text. Complex forms, embedded media, JavaScript, portfolios, and specialized workflows may work better in dedicated PDF software.
What Chrome’s PDF viewer can—and cannot—do
Chrome is convenient for reading PDFs in the same app as web pages. Its viewer supports common tasks such as zooming, searching text, printing, downloading, page navigation, and some form interaction. Features depend on the document.

Chrome is not a full PDF editor. For dependable editing of existing text, OCR, redaction, page reordering, advanced signing, document comparison, or specialized forms and accessibility work, use a dedicated PDF application that supports the task. Chrome may also use more system memory than a lightweight standalone viewer when many tabs, extensions, or large documents are open; that is a general trade-off, not a performance benchmark.
If you handle sensitive documents, keep Chrome updated, use trusted files, and review installed extensions. A PDF displayed in a browser is not automatically harmless, and managed devices may restrict extensions or PDF behavior.

Switch back to another PDF app
- Windows: Right-click a PDF, choose Open with → Choose another app, select Edge, Acrobat, or another installed viewer, and enable Always use this app. You can also search for
.pdfunder Settings → Apps → Default apps. - macOS: Select a PDF in Finder, choose Get Info, pick another app under Open with, and select Change All.
- Chromebook: In Files, right-click a PDF and use Open with → Change default to choose Gallery if available.
Changing the default only changes which app opens a file. It does not move, convert, or alter PDFs you have already downloaded.
