Target the element that actually carries the contenteditable attribute, make it focusable, click it to establish the caret, and then call .type() on that same element:
cy.get('[contenteditable="true"]')
.click()
.type('Hello, World')
The most common mistake is selecting a descendant such as .editor p. Cypress supports contenteditable controls, but the subject of .type() must be the editable host itself, not one of its child nodes.
Why Cypress .type() fails on contenteditable controls
A rich-text editor often renders a tree like this:
<div class="editor" contenteditable="true">
<p>Existing text</p>
</div>
The div is the editing host. The paragraph is only content inside it. Calling cy.get('.editor p').type('new text') gives Cypress a node that is not itself editable, so the command can fail or type into the wrong place. Select the host instead:
cy.get('.editor[contenteditable="true"]')
.click()
.type('new text')
If your application uses contenteditable without a value, use [contenteditable]; if it marks editable elements explicitly, use [contenteditable="true"]. Scope the selector to the intended editor when a page contains more than one editable region.

The reliable test pattern
1. Inspect the rendered DOM
Use the browser’s developer tools or Cypress’s command log to find the element with the actual contenteditable attribute. Do not assume the element that visually contains the text is the editing host. Frameworks may add wrappers, toolbars and nested paragraphs.
2. Select the host directly
cy.get('[contenteditable="true"]')
Prefer a stable application selector if one exists:
cy.get('[data-cy="message-editor"][contenteditable="true"]')
A dedicated selector avoids accidentally matching a hidden editor, a search field, or a second editor mounted elsewhere on the page.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →3. Click before typing
Clicking the host makes it focusable in the test and places the caret according to the editor’s normal browser behavior:
cy.get('[data-cy="message-editor"]')
.click()
.type('Hello, World')
To append at the current end, click the location your users would click, or use the editor’s supported selection mechanism. A click alone does not guarantee a particular offset in every rich-text implementation.
4. Assert the application state
For a plain contenteditable host, inspect its text or the value your application stores. The right assertion depends on the editor:

cy.get('[data-cy="message-editor"]')
.should('contain.text', 'Hello, World')
Many rich-text editors maintain a model separate from the DOM. In that case, assert the visible result or the application’s serialized output rather than assuming a particular paragraph structure.
Focusability and Cypress actionability
.type() performs Cypress actionability checks before sending keys. The subject must be found, visible and actionable, and Cypress also checks properties such as readonly state. A command can therefore time out even when the selector is correct.
- Wait for the editor to be mounted before querying it.
- Remove or close a modal, overlay, loading screen or disabled state that intercepts the click.
- Confirm the host is not readonly and that the application has not temporarily disabled editing.
- Use the command log to see which actionability check is waiting.
If the page renders an editor asynchronously, let Cypress retry the query and state assertion instead of adding an arbitrary sleep:
cy.get('[data-cy="message-editor"]', { timeout: 10000 })
.should('be.visible')
.click()
.type('Ready')
Only increase the timeout when the application genuinely needs longer to render. A longer timeout cannot fix a selector that points to a child node or a readonly host.
Choosing the right selector
One editor on the page
cy.get('[contenteditable]').click().type('Text')
This is a useful diagnostic pattern, but a product test should normally use an identifier owned by the application.
Several editors
cy.get('[data-cy="title-editor"][contenteditable="true"]')
.click()
.type('Release notes')
cy.get('[data-cy="body-editor"][contenteditable="true"]')
.click()
.type('Details')
If the attribute is on a wrapper, inspect the DOM and target that wrapper. Do not chain to find('p') merely because the paragraph contains the visible text.

Attribute values and inherited editability
HTML can use different contenteditable values and nested regions. Match the markup your application actually emits. If a parent is editable but a nested element is marked non-editable, target the correct editable host and verify the intended region before typing.
Rich-text editors need editor-aware selection
CKEditor, Quill, Draft.js and ProseMirror can manage selection and document state beyond the browser’s simple DOM. Cypress documents support for contenteditable elements, but it does not make every editor’s selection model identical.
When a click is enough
For a user-like workflow, click the editor where a user would place the caret and type:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
cy.get('[data-cy="composer"]')
.click()
.type('A sentence')
This is usually the best starting point because it exercises the editor’s normal focus and selection behavior.
When the editor’s API is the better boundary
If typing changes the DOM but not the editor’s model, or if the caret jumps between blocks, consult that editor’s documented testing or state API. Use Cypress to drive the supported public interaction where possible, and assert the serialized value or visible output. Avoid reaching into private framework objects unless the editor explicitly documents that integration.
Preserving formatting and special characters
Keep text entry and formatting actions separate. Type the text with .type(), then test toolbar buttons or keyboard shortcuts as distinct user actions. This makes a failure clear: insertion, selection or formatting.

.type() versus cy.press()
| Need | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Insert ordinary text | .type() |
Designed for text entry into inputs, textareas and supported contenteditable hosts. |
| Move the caret with Arrow, Home, End or similar keys | cy.press() |
Cypress recommends it for navigation keys. |
| Verify native keyboard-event behavior | cy.press() |
Use it when the test specifically needs native keyboard events rather than text insertion. |
For example, type content first, then test navigation separately:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchescy.get('[data-cy="editor"]')
.click()
.type('First line')
cy.press('END')
Use the key name and behavior documented for your installed Cypress version. Do not replace all text entry with navigation-key commands; they test different behavior.
Typing speed and Cypress versions
The current Cypress API reference lists .type()‘s default delay as 0. Its history records that the default changed from 10 milliseconds to 0 in Cypress 16.0.0. The Cypress releases page reports 16.0.0 on September 1, 2026. Because behavior is version-sensitive, check the API reference against the version installed in your project.
Set a delay explicitly when the application or test needs slower simulated typing:
cy.get('[data-cy="editor"]')
.click()
.type('Human-paced text', { delay: 25 })
A delay can expose race conditions in an editor, but it also makes tests slower. Prefer waiting for a documented UI state or asserting the model after typing rather than adding delay to every test.

Common failures and precise fixes
“Element is not editable” or typing does nothing
- Cause: the selector matched a child such as
p,spanor a formatting node. - Fix: inspect the DOM and select the element that owns
contenteditable.
// Fragile when p is only a child
cy.get('.editor p').type('Text')
// Target the editing host
cy.get('.editor[contenteditable="true"]')
.click()
.type('Text')
Timed out waiting for the element to become actionable
- Cause: the editor is hidden, covered, detached, disabled or still rendering.
- Fix: wait for the editor to be visible and mounted, remove the covering state, and verify that the host is not readonly.
The text appears in the wrong editor
- Cause: a broad selector matched multiple contenteditable elements.
- Fix: scope the query with a stable
data-cy, role, container or editor-specific class, and assert the match is unique where appropriate.
The caret starts in an unexpected position
- Cause: the editor controls selection, or the click landed in a different block.
- Fix: click the intended location, use the editor’s supported selection API, or split the test into explicit navigation and text-entry steps.
The DOM changes but the saved value is empty
- Cause: a rich-text editor’s internal model was not updated through the path your test used.
- Fix: interact with the public editor surface and assert the serialized application value after the editor’s normal update event.
Typing is flaky only in CI
- Cause: timing-sensitive rendering, an overlay, or an editor that has not completed initialization.
- Fix: wait on a meaningful ready state, keep selectors stable, avoid arbitrary sleeps, and capture the command log or a screenshot at the failure point.
A complete Cypress example
describe('message editor', () => {
beforeEach(() => {
cy.visit('/messages/new')
cy.get('[data-cy="message-editor"]', { timeout: 10000 })
.should('be.visible')
.and('have.attr', 'contenteditable', 'true')
})
it('enters text in the editable host', () => {
cy.get('[data-cy="message-editor"]')
.click()
.type('Hello, World')
.should('contain.text', 'Hello, World')
})
it('uses a navigation key separately', () => {
cy.get('[data-cy="message-editor"]')
.click()
.type('First line')
cy.press('END')
})
})
The assertion on contenteditable documents the contract your selector relies on. If the application changes its markup, the test fails at the contract check instead of producing a misleading typing failure.

Practical checklist
- Locate the actual element with
contenteditable. - Target that host, not a nested paragraph or formatting node.
- Confirm it is visible, focusable and not readonly.
- Click to establish focus and caret position.
- Use
.type()for text andcy.press()for navigation or native key behavior. - For rich-text editors, verify the editor model or serialized value, not only incidental DOM markup.
- Set
delayexplicitly only when slower typing is part of the behavior under test.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use force:true with a contenteditable editor?
The documented solution is to target the editable host and satisfy Cypress’s normal actionability checks. Forcing an interaction can hide an overlay, focus or readonly problem, so correct the page state and selector first.
Should I use cy.get(‘[contenteditable]’) in every test?
Use it to diagnose the DOM or when the page has one clearly defined editor. Stable, application-owned selectors are safer when several editable regions can exist.
Why does a rich-text editor need a different assertion?
Editors such as CKEditor, Quill, Draft.js and ProseMirror may keep a document model separate from their child nodes. Assert the visible result or the application’s serialized value according to that editor’s supported behavior.
