If your account has Google Slides’ background-removal feature, select the image and choose Edit image → Remove background. If you don’t see that option, remove the background with an external tool, export the result as a transparent PNG, and insert it into Slides. To fade an entire image instead, use the Transparency slider—this does not remove just the background.
Choose the effect you need
“Transparent background” can mean two different things:
- Remove the background: the person, product, or other subject stays opaque while the surrounding pixels become transparent. The slide’s color or content shows through those areas.
- Fade the whole image: the subject and background both become see-through. This is useful for a watermark or a subdued photo behind text, but it does not create a cutout.
A white rectangle is not transparent. A checkerboard shown by an image editor is usually just a preview of transparent pixels, not part of the exported image.

Method 1: Remove the background in Google Slides
Google documents a built-in Remove background option for Google Slides. It requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google One AI Premium subscription, and Google says availability may depend on gradual rollout and account eligibility. It is therefore normal for some users not to see it. See Google’s instructions and eligibility details.

- Open your presentation in Google Slides on a computer.
- If the image is not already on the slide, choose Insert → Image and select or upload it.
- Click the image itself to select it. If it is grouped with other objects, you may need to ungroup it or select the image directly.
- Click Edit image in the toolbar, then choose Remove background. You can also try Format → Image → Edit image → Remove background.
- Wait for processing, then inspect the cutout against the slide. Zoom in on fine edges and check the result over both light and dark colors if possible.
AI removal can miss fine details or remove parts of a subject, particularly around hair, fur, glass, shadows, and thin structures. White objects against pale backgrounds may also be difficult to separate. A higher-contrast original or a tool with manual edge refinement may give a better result.
Protect the original first: duplicate the slide or image before editing if you may need the untouched version. Google says Reset image does not restore a removed background. If the result is wrong, use Undo promptly or recover an earlier version through File → Version history. See Google’s recovery guidance.

Why “Remove background” may be missing
- Check the selection: select an image object, not the slide, a shape, or a group. Try the toolbar’s Edit image control and the alternate Format → Image path.
- Check eligibility: Google lists eligible Google Workspace or Google One AI Premium subscriptions as a requirement. Having a Google account or a Workspace account alone does not guarantee access.
- Allow for rollout and settings: access can vary by account and region, and an organization administrator may restrict AI features. Google also documents language limitations for some generative image features; consult its Workspace Experiments information if relevant.
- Use a desktop browser: the documented workflow is for Slides on a computer. If the option is absent in a mobile app, try the desktop version rather than assuming the feature is available there.
If the control still is not available, use the PNG workflow below. Don’t buy a subscription solely for one cutout unless its other features are useful to you.
Method 2: Fade the entire image
For a background photo that should remain visible but not compete with text, adjust its overall transparency:

- Select the image.
- Right-click and choose Format options, or open the image options from the toolbar.
- Open Adjustments.
- Move the Transparency slider until the image is as faint as you want. Adjust brightness or contrast if needed.
This changes opacity across the whole image, including the subject. It is not a selective background remover. Google describes the image-adjustment controls in its image color and filter announcement.
Method 3: Use an external background remover
If Slides does not offer background removal, use a tool that can export an image with transparency. Examples include Adobe Express, Canva, and remove.bg. They are options, not guarantees of identical features, limits, or output quality.

- Upload the original image to the tool.
- Run its background-removal action and inspect the edges, including holes inside objects such as chair backs or handles.
- Download or export as a transparent PNG. PNG supports transparency when the file is exported with transparent pixels. JPEG/JPG does not preserve transparency, so transparent areas are typically flattened to a solid color.
- In Slides, choose Insert → Image → Upload from computer and select the PNG.
- Resize and position the cutout. Use Arrange → Order to place it in front of or behind other slide objects.
External services may have resolution, credit, watermark, or subscription limits. Uploading also sends the image to a third party, so don’t use a service for confidential or sensitive imagery unless your organization permits it. For private material, use an approved workflow or a suitable local editor.

Place and check the cutout in your slide
To confirm that the background is truly transparent, place the image over a strongly colored shape or another image. If a white rectangle remains, the file may have been flattened, exported as JPEG, or may contain actual white pixels. A PNG can still have a solid background; the extension alone does not prove transparency.

Look closely for halos, jagged edges, missing hair or fur, and unwanted gaps. Test against both a light and a dark background, since artifacts can disappear against one color and stand out against another. If the source is a logo, use the original transparent PNG or SVG from its owner when available; removing the background from a screenshot can leave blurry or uneven edges.
If an image was set through the slide’s Background setting rather than inserted as an image object, the object-editing controls may not apply to it. Insert it onto the slide as an image object if you need to edit or remove its background.
