You can build a lightweight, Git-based publishing workflow with Metalsmith and deploy its generated static site through Cloudflare Pages. Your content and metadata live in repository files; a build turns them into HTML and assets. This is not, by itself, a browser-based editing interface or a database-backed content API.

What this setup does—and what it does not

Metalsmith describes itself as “an extremely simple, pluggable static site generator for NodeJS.” It reads source files, passes them through a plugin pipeline, and writes transformed files to a destination directory. Markdown conversion, front matter, collections, permalinks, and layouts are among the documented building blocks. Metalsmith’s getting-started guide explains the basic model.

That makes this a CMS in the sense of a content-management workflow: contributors edit files, track changes in Git, and publish by building the site. Metalsmith does not supply a graphical authoring screen, user roles, or a database content API in this setup. Those would require separate components.

Choose who builds and deploys the site

There are two sensible ways to connect the repository to Cloudflare. With Pages Git integration, Pages watches the repository, runs the build command you configure, and publishes the output directory. With GitHub Actions, a workflow can explicitly install dependencies, build the site, and invoke Cloudflare deployment tooling. Pick one deployment path for a given commit rather than configuring both to publish the same changes.

Workflow Who controls the build Useful when
Cloudflare Pages Git integration Pages runs the configured build command and publishes the configured output directory. You want Cloudflare to handle repository-triggered builds and branch previews with minimal workflow configuration.
GitHub Actions with Cloudflare deployment tooling Your workflow defines the install, build, and deployment steps. You need explicit CI workflow steps or gates and are prepared to configure deployment credentials and target settings.

Cloudflare says, “You do not need a framework to deploy with Cloudflare Pages.” Its Git integration guide describes connecting GitHub or GitLab, selecting a production branch, configuring a build command and output directory, and using preview deployments for non-production branches. The Pages build command and directory must match what your Metalsmith project actually uses.

Set up the Metalsmith project

  1. Create a Git repository. Keep your source content, templates, assets, Metalsmith configuration, and package metadata together. A typical project separates source files from generated output, but choose directory names that match your configuration rather than relying on a framework preset.
  2. Add content and metadata. Write pages in Markdown or another format supported by your chosen plugins. Where appropriate, use front matter for per-file metadata such as a title or date; plugins can read and modify file contents and metadata.
  3. Configure the build pipeline. Set the source directory, destination directory, and ordered plugin chain. A common pattern is to convert Markdown, organize pages into collections, apply permalinks, and render layouts. The exact plugins depend on the site you are making.
  4. Run the build locally. Confirm that the command in your package scripts produces the intended HTML and assets in the destination directory. Check a representative page and its links before configuring deployment.

Metalsmith’s getting-started documentation covers the source/destination and plugin model, while its deployment guidance discusses publishing builds.

Deploy with Cloudflare Pages Git integration

  1. In the Cloudflare dashboard, create a Pages project and connect the GitHub or GitLab repository containing the Metalsmith project.
  2. Select the production branch. Pages can create previews for other branches, so contributors can review a branch build without making it the production deployment.
  3. Set the build command to the command that runs your Metalsmith build, such as the package script you verified locally.
  4. Set the build output directory to the exact destination directory Metalsmith generates. If the paths differ, Pages will not publish the site you expect.
  5. Save the configuration and push a change. Check the build log and deployed preview or production site to confirm that the build completed and the expected files were published.

Cloudflare’s Pages Git integration guide documents the repository connection, branch handling, build command, and output-directory settings. Do not assume that a framework preset knows Metalsmith’s output path.

Use GitHub Actions when you want explicit workflow control

An Actions-driven deployment separates the CI sequence into steps: check out the repository, install its dependencies, run the Metalsmith build, and deploy the generated result. Cloudflare’s current Static Assets and Workers guide describes deploying with Wrangler from CI/CD systems.

Be precise about the destination product before adapting a deployment command. Cloudflare Pages Git integration and Workers static-asset deployment are distinct workflows; the fact that both can serve static files does not make their setup interchangeable. Confirm whether your intended target is Pages or Workers static assets, then follow the corresponding current Cloudflare instructions for output configuration and authentication. Store credentials as repository secrets or use an appropriate short-lived authentication method. Exact secret names and workflow syntax depend on the selected deployment route, so use its current vendor documentation rather than copying an unverified YAML template.

Check the publishing path when a deployment fails

  • The build succeeds but the site is empty or missing files: compare Metalsmith’s destination directory with the output directory configured in Pages or the deployment workflow.
  • Content changes do not appear: check that the edited files are in the configured source directory, that the expected plugins run, and that the commit was pushed to the branch whose deployment you are viewing.
  • A branch preview does not appear: confirm that the repository is connected to Pages and that the branch is not being mistaken for the selected production branch.
  • An Actions deployment fails at authentication or publish time: verify that the credentials and deployment command correspond to the intended Cloudflare product and that the workflow is targeting the generated output.

When a static Git workflow is not enough

This approach works well when editing files in a repository and publishing a generated site fit your team’s process. If editors need a browser-based interface, role-based permissions, or a content API, those capabilities are outside the documented Metalsmith-plus-static-deployment setup and must be added separately. Likewise, a static site deployed to Cloudflare is not automatically a dynamic CMS running on Workers.
