On a web page, wrap the <img> element in an <a href="..."> anchor. In WordPress, Google editors, Word, or PowerPoint, select the image, choose the link command, and enter the destination. The image file itself does not become interactive; the page or document containing it does.
After adding the link, test it in the published page or the shared document, using the same viewing mode your audience will use. This catches broken URLs, edit-mode behavior, permission problems, and links that were accidentally set to open the image rather than the intended page.
Choose what the click should do
Before adding a hyperlink, decide the outcome you want. A screenshot can link to a web page, a full-size image, an attachment page, a section inside the same page, or an email address. The correct destination depends on your editor and your audience.
- Open a web page: use the page’s complete URL, such as
https://example.com/help. - Open the original image: link to the uploaded PNG, JPEG, or WebP file.
- Open a CMS attachment page: use the attachment URL when that page contains context or download controls.
- Jump within a page or document: use a unique fragment such as
#installation, or a document bookmark. - Start an email: use a
mailto:address where the editor permits it.
Do not assume that “link to image” and “link to page” mean the same thing. WordPress, for example, offers separate choices for a custom URL, the media file, and an attachment page.

HTML: wrap the screenshot in an anchor
This is the basic, portable method for a website:

</a>Replace the href value with the destination and the src value with the image URL or path. The anchor must have an href; JavaScript click handlers or a bare <div> do not provide the same dependable link semantics.
Open the destination in a new tab only when useful
If visitors need to keep the current page open, you can add target="_blank". For an external destination, also add rel="noopener":

</a>Do not add a new-tab target automatically. It can interrupt the expected back-button flow, especially on mobile.
Make the linked image accessible
Write alt text that explains the image’s purpose and, when relevant, where the link goes. Google Search Central states: “For images as links, Google uses the alt attribute of the img element as anchor text, so be sure to add descriptive alt text to your images.” Avoid repeating a surrounding caption word for word, and do not use “click here” as the only description.

For example, alt="Open the Stripe billing settings walkthrough" tells a screen-reader user what will happen. If the screenshot is purely decorative and adjacent text already names the destination, an empty alt="" may be appropriate, but do not hide an image that conveys essential information.

Preserve useful visual cues
Browsers often show a pointer cursor for links, but you can make the behavior clearer with CSS:

WordPress
Block editor
- Insert or select the Image block.
- With the image selected, use the block’s link control.
- Paste or search for the target URL and apply it.
- Open the link settings and confirm whether it should open in a new tab.
- Preview or publish, then click the image as a visitor.
WordPress can also link an image directly to its media file. Choose that only when opening the full-size screenshot is the intended result; otherwise paste the destination page’s URL.

- Insert the image and click it in the editor.
- Open the image’s link settings and inspect Link To.
- Choose Custom URL for a normal web page.
- Choose Media File to open the original image, Attachment Page for the attachment view, or None to remove the link.
- Update or publish and test the public page.
Link to a section on the same page
Assign a unique HTML anchor to the destination heading or block, then set the image link to that fragment, such as #pricing. The anchor name must be unique in that document. Test from the top of the published page, not only while editing.
Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
- Select the image or other object you want people to activate.
- Choose Insert > Link, or use the link shortcut offered by your editor.
- Enter a web URL or email address and apply it.
- In a document, you can also choose a bookmark or another internal location when available.
- Share the file with the required permissions and test the link in view mode.
Google’s interface can expose different controls for an image, drawing, or slide object. If selecting the image does not reveal a link control, try the image’s context menu or place the image in an object that supports links. A link that works for the owner may fail for readers who lack access to the destination or to the file itself.

Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
Word
- Select the picture.
- Choose Insert > Link, or right-click and choose Link.
- Enter the destination in the Address box.
- Confirm the link and save the document.
- Use the document’s normal reading mode to test it.
PowerPoint
- Select the picture on the slide.
- Choose Insert > Link.
- Enter a web address or choose a presentation location.
- Run the slide show and click the picture, rather than testing only in the editing canvas.
Menu names and shortcut behavior can vary by Office version, operating system, and whether the file is being edited in the desktop or web app. If the link disappears after exporting, test the exported PDF or presentation itself; an editor preview is not proof that the shared file retained the hyperlink.
Link text, alt text, and clarity
A linked screenshot has two communication jobs: identify what is shown and explain where activation leads. Use a nearby caption or sentence when the destination is not obvious. WordPress’s style guidance recommends: “Write detailed and expressive link text that describes where the reader will be guided to, and what the reader will see after following the link.” Avoid vague wording such as “click here,” especially when several images appear on one page.

alt="Open the account-settings tutorial"when the image links to that tutorial. - Best for a detailed screenshot: describe the meaningful screen content and the destination in surrounding text, while keeping alt text concise.
Common problems and fixes
The image opens by itself instead of the intended page
The editor is probably set to link to the media file. Change the target to Custom URL or replace the href with the destination page.
Nothing happens when the image is clicked
Inspect the published HTML and confirm that the image is inside an <a> element with a non-empty href. In a document or presentation, leave editing mode and test in reading or slide-show mode.
The link works for you but not for readers
Check sharing permissions, login requirements, VPN or intranet addresses, and URL spelling. Test in a private browser window or a separate account.

The image has no visible indication that it is linked
Add a caption such as “Open the full tutorial,” use a consistent linked-image style, and retain keyboard focus styling. Do not rely on hover alone because touchscreens and keyboard users do not have hover.
The link breaks after moving or exporting the file
Relative image paths can break when a page or asset moves. Confirm that the final document contains the destination URL and that the exported format supports hyperlinks. Re-test the exact file or URL you distribute.
An internal jump lands in the wrong place
Check that the fragment matches the target anchor exactly and that no other element uses the same anchor name. Fragment names are case-sensitive in some systems.

- The image is visibly the linked object, not merely adjacent to a link.
- The destination is the intended page, section, file, or email action.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a PNG or JPEG contain a clickable link by itself?
No. The image file stores pixels; the surrounding webpage, document, presentation, or PDF must provide the hyperlink.
Should I link a screenshot to its full-size file or to a web page?
Use the full-size file when viewers need to inspect or download the image. Use a custom page URL when the screenshot is a visual entry point to instructions, a product, or another destination.
Will a clickable image work on a phone?
Yes, provided the published page or shared file preserves the hyperlink. Test on a touch device because hover-only cues are not available there.
Why does a link work in an editor but fail after sharing?
The shared version may have different permissions, may have removed the hyperlink during export, or may be opening in an editing mode. Test the exact published, shared, or exported version your audience receives.
