Create a poll in Google Forms by starting a blank form, adding a question, and choosing Multiple choice for a one-answer vote. Set access and response options, publish the form, then share its responder link. The steps below also explain how to keep a poll anonymous, limit repeat submissions, and read the results.
Create a Google Forms poll
These steps describe the desktop browser workflow. Menu labels can vary slightly by language, account type, and Google’s rollout.
- Go to Google Forms and select Blank form. Google’s form-creation guide describes the blank-form starting point.
- Give the form a clear name, such as “Team Lunch Poll.” Add a description if respondents need context, a deadline, or an explanation of how their answers will be used.
- Click Add question, enter the question, and select Multiple choice from the question-type menu.
- Add one answer option per choice. Select Add option for more choices. Add Other only if a written alternative will be useful.
- Turn on Required if respondents must choose an answer before submitting. Google documents required questions in its question and form editing help.
- Review the form’s settings for identity, repeat submissions, and response editing before sharing it.
- Click Publish, set who can respond, publish the form, and copy the responder link. An unpublished form cannot be completed by respondents, even if they have its link; see Google’s publishing and sharing instructions.
- Open the preview to check how the poll looks to respondents. Test the responder link in a private browser window if access needs to work for people outside your account.
Choose the right question type
The question type determines what a vote means. For a conventional poll with one choice per person, use Multiple choice.

Google’s answer-validation and grid guidance explains grid behavior and checkbox rules. A multiple-choice grid can require an answer in each row and can optionally limit one response per column. Grids can be awkward on small screens; if there are only a few choices, separate questions may be clearer.

Use checkboxes only when multiple answers are allowed
Checkboxes do not create a single-choice vote. If respondents may select several answers but you need a cap, use the question’s response validation options, such as Select at most or Select exactly. For a one-answer vote, change the question type to Multiple choice.
Set response and identity controls
Answer selection and submission control are separate decisions: the question type sets what people can choose; form settings affect who can respond and what identifying information is collected.
Limit submissions to one per signed-in account
To enable this control, open the form, go to Settings, expand Responses, and turn on Limit to 1 response. Google requires respondents to sign in to a Google Account when this setting is on. Their usernames are not automatically recorded unless you also configure the form to collect email addresses. See Google’s response-limiting help.
This setting reduces repeat submissions; it does not prove that each response came from a different person. Someone may use multiple accounts, people may share an account or device, and Google notes that simultaneous submissions can sometimes be accepted despite a response limit. It may also prevent people without Google Accounts from voting.
Choose whether to collect email addresses
Google Forms offers verified email collection and responder-entered email collection. Verified collection associates a response with a signed-in account; responder-entered collection depends on what the respondent types. Collecting email addresses means the poll is not anonymous from the organizer’s perspective. Google describes these response options in its response-management help.
If you want a less identifiable preference poll, avoid collecting email addresses and explain that choice to respondents. That makes it harder to discourage repeat submissions. If the poll requires both a secret ballot and strong one-person-one-vote controls, use a purpose-built voting system rather than treating a Google Form as an election system.
Allow edits or send a response copy when useful
Allow response editing when people may need to change availability or correct an answer. It is usually a poor fit for a vote intended to be final. You can also offer respondents a copy of their response; email delivery can be affected by spam filtering or anti-abuse measures, so do not promise that every receipt will arrive. These options are covered in Google’s response-management documentation.
Publish and share the poll
Google Forms now uses a publish step and responder-access controls. Depending on the account and form configuration, access can be granted to individuals, Google Groups, target audiences, or people with general link access. For a personal poll, choose only the audience that should be able to respond; for a work or school poll, organization policies may restrict external access.

- Click Publish in the upper-right corner.
- Click Manage to review who can respond. Select the intended audience or general link access, if available.
- Click Publish to make the form available, then copy the responder link.
- Share the link by email or social platform, or embed the form on a website or blog if that suits the audience.
- Open the responder preview and check the question, options, required setting, and access from a respondent’s perspective.
Some forms cannot be embedded directly in an email, including forms with file-upload questions, rating questions, images in questions or options, or secured quizzes. Google’s publishing help explains sharing options. If an older form’s access behavior differs from an old tutorial, Google says the transition to its newer form version was completed for older forms in December 2025, and trusted-domain access through the old settings model was removed on September 8, 2025; see Google’s access-change notice.
View, analyze, and close poll results
Read the built-in summaries
Open the form and select Responses. The Summary view shows aggregate charts, Question focuses on answers to each question, and Individual lets you inspect submissions separately. The Summary view appears after at least one response has been submitted. Google explains these views in its response-summary help.
Use Summary to see a quick result. Before announcing a winner, close the poll at the stated deadline and report the response count alongside the outcome. If respondents could submit more than once, describe the total as submissions rather than a count of unique voters.

To work with the data, select the Sheets icon in the Responses area or choose a response destination to link the results to a spreadsheet. Sheets is useful for sorting, filtering, counting, calculating percentages, or making a custom chart; it takes more spreadsheet work than the built-in summary. See Google’s instructions for viewing and managing responses.

Stop accepting responses
When the deadline arrives, open Responses and turn off acceptance of responses. Edit the closed-form message so late visitors know the poll is closed. Google documents this control in its response acceptance help.
Make the vote clear and fair
- Ask one question at a time, and specify whether people should choose a preference, their availability, or every option they would accept.
- Keep choices mutually exclusive when respondents may choose only one, and make the options exhaustive where practical.
- Avoid leading wording. “Which date works best?” is clearer than wording that nudges respondents toward a preferred date.
- Use “Other” or “None of these” only when those answers are meaningful; free-text answers can be inconsistent to group later.
- State whether responses are anonymous, whether people can vote once, when voting closes, and how the result will be used.
- Decide the counting rule before collecting responses. A simple multiple-choice poll usually uses the option with the most selections; checkboxes instead count approvals and do not necessarily identify a single winner.
- Do not call a result final while the poll is still open.
Fix common Google Forms poll problems
People say the link does not open
Check that the form is published, that responder access includes the people you invited, and that you copied the responder link rather than an editor or collaborator link. Work or school settings may restrict access to the organization. Review Publish or Share, then Manage, and test the responder link in a private browser window. Older trusted-domain settings may no longer work under Google’s changed access model; details are in its access-change notice.
Respondents can submit without choosing an option
Turn on Required for the poll question. This prevents a blank answer to that question, though it does not control repeat submissions.

The question is likely set to Checkboxes. Change its type to Multiple choice when each respondent must choose only one answer.

People submitted more than once
Check whether Limit to 1 response is on. If it is off, respondents can submit repeatedly. If it is on, the control still operates at the account level, not as proof of one human per response, and it can be affected by shared accounts or simultaneous submissions.
The Summary tab or expected results are missing
The Summary tab does not appear until at least one response arrives. For very high response volumes, Google documents thresholds at which some views or synchronization features may stop appearing or working normally: over 50,000 responses for the summary, over 100,000 for Sheets synchronization, and over 10,000 for some CSV ordering and question or individual views. The result does not produce a fair single winner
Overlapping answer choices, a mismatch between “favorite” and “available,” inconsistent “Other” entries, multiple-selection settings, or an open poll can make a result hard to interpret. Define the question and counting rule before sending the form, then report the number of responses with the result.
When another tool is a better fit
For an informal poll, a classroom choice, or a basic team preference, Google Forms is usually enough, especially when you want simple charts or spreadsheet analysis. Consider a specialized voting platform for stronger election controls, or a survey product when branding, research features, respondent management, or integrations justify the extra setup.
- SurveyMonkey is more survey-oriented and may suit research, templates, collectors, and analysis needs; its paid plans and response limits may be unnecessary for a casual vote.
- Typeform emphasizes a conversational, branded respondent experience and features such as video questions, follow-ups, and integrations; it may be more than a quick internal poll requires.
Neither a polished design nor a spreadsheet automatically makes a poll election-grade. Choose a tool based on the identity, privacy, counting, and access controls the vote actually needs.
