To make a poll on Discord, open the message composer, select +, choose Poll, enter a question and answers, set the duration and voting type, then select Post. Discord’s built-in polls work on desktop and mobile, but they are not anonymous.
Make a poll on Discord desktop
- Open the text channel, voice-channel text chat, direct message, group message, or announcement channel where you want the poll.
- Select the + beside the message field. This is the composer button, not the server or channel menu.
- Choose Poll.
- Enter your question and add answer choices. You can add up to 10 answers and optionally assign an emoji to a choice.
- Choose how long the poll will stay open and whether voters may select more than one answer.
- Select Post.

Make a poll on Discord mobile
- Open the Discord app and go to the channel or conversation.
- Tap the + beside the message field, then tap Poll.
- Enter the question and answers, choose a duration, and set whether multiple answers are allowed.
- Tap Post.
Discord recommends mobile app version 221 or higher for the best Polls experience; that wording is a recommendation, not a stated minimum supported version. If the option is missing, update the app and check the permissions below.

Choose the poll settings
- Question and choices: Keep the question specific and make the choices easy to distinguish. The user-facing feature allows up to 10 answers.
- Duration: The standard interface offers 1 hour, 4 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, or 1 week. The creator can also end an open poll early. Discord’s developer API documentation describes a separate maximum duration of up to 32 days; that is not a normal duration choice in the app.
- Single or multiple answers: Leave multiple-answer voting off when people should choose just one option, such as a preferred meeting day. Turn it on when people may select every applicable choice, such as games they want to play. In a multiple-answer poll, percentages may not add up to 100%.
- Emojis: You can add an emoji to an answer to make choices easier to scan.
For a poll people will treat as a decision, say who should vote and when it closes. A Discord poll is an informal community vote, not necessarily a representative survey.

How to vote
Select one or more answers, as allowed by the poll, then select Vote. On mobile, tap the choice and then tap Vote. Look for the confirmation check mark: choosing an answer is not always the same as submitting your vote. While the poll is open, you can remove your vote and vote again, so you can change your selection.
End, pin, or delete a poll
- End: The poll’s creator can end it early. This stops further voting while keeping the message and results.
- Pin: Pinning the message can make the poll easier to find, but it does not extend the voting period.
- Delete: Deleting a poll means deleting its entire message. Discord says there is no separate restore or archive function for a deleted poll.
Discord’s developer documentation says a poll message cannot be edited after posting. If you need to correct the question or choices, delete the message and post a new poll.
Why is the Poll option missing?
A missing option does not always mean the same thing. Check these causes in order:
- Look in the right place: Open the message composer and select the +. Poll is in that menu, not the server or channel menu.
- Check the client: Update Discord, then try the desktop/web client or mobile app. The interface and availability can vary by client or change over time.
- Check message access: In a text channel, Discord says users need permission to send messages to create a poll. Being able to read and vote does not necessarily mean you can create one.
- Ask an administrator about Create Polls: Server owners and administrators can manage this permission for roles and channels. In server settings, open Roles, select a role, and review Create Polls. Channel-specific overrides can also affect access; check the channel’s settings and Permissions.

Are Discord polls anonymous?
No. Discord’s built-in polls do not offer anonymous voting. Do not use one for sensitive feedback, complaints, reports, or personal questions where voters expect confidentiality. Use an external anonymous survey or a Discord app that explicitly supports anonymous voting, and check how it handles data before using it.
Can you make a poll with /poll?
Not with Discord’s native Polls feature: it is created through the + menu, not a native /poll command. A server may have a third-party app that provides a slash-command poll; in that case, the command belongs to the app.

Built-in poll or third-party app?
For a quick vote, Discord’s built-in feature avoids installing another app or granting it permissions. Consider a third-party app or an external survey only when you need something the native poll does not provide, such as anonymous voting, role-restricted participation, scheduling, recurring polls, custom durations, or more advanced survey controls. Discord’s App Directory includes apps such as EasyPoll and RT Pollmaster; their listed features are claims from their developers, not native Discord features.

Before adding an app, inspect the permissions it requests and its privacy policy. A poll tool may request access to messages, members, roles, or channel-management functions—more than a one-off poll needs. For confidential voting, verify exactly what “anonymous” means for that app rather than assuming voters’ identities are hidden.
