For a one-off image, frame the location in a map service and capture the screen. For a repeatable website asset with a chosen size, marker, or route, request a static map image from an API. Either way, keep the map provider’s required attribution legible. If visitors need to pan or zoom, use an interactive map rather than a screenshot.
Choose a static image or an interactive map
A screenshot or static-map API response is a fixed image: it shows a place but does not give visitors map controls. It suits a contact page, event listing, location card, or article illustration when the essential task is seeing where something is. The OpenStreetMap Wiki describes static map images as lacking dynamic map features, and includes screenshots among the ways to make one: OpenStreetMap Wiki: Static map images.
Use an interactive map when visitors must pan, zoom, explore nearby places, or choose directions. Do not treat a static image as a replacement for those capabilities. A static image also needs useful text context: include the address or location in page text, and consider a text link to directions for visitors who need them.

Make a one-off map screenshot in a browser
- Open the map service. Search for the business, address, landmark, or coordinates. Confirm that the selected result is the intended location.
- Set the framing. Adjust zoom and position so the place and enough surrounding streets or landmarks are visible. Avoid a frame that makes the location ambiguous.
- Check labels and credits. Make sure important place labels are readable and any provider or data-source attribution remains visible. Do not crop away required credits.
- Capture the map. Use your operating system’s screenshot tool to capture the map area, then crop only excess surroundings. Screenshot shortcut keys vary across systems and versions, so use the current instructions for your device rather than relying on a shortcut that may not apply.
- Review the exported image at its page size. Check that labels and attribution remain legible on the actual page, including on a narrow screen. If the image will be enlarged, recapture at a larger size instead of relying on a blurry upscale.
This approach is quick and appropriate for a single image. Its framing and output depend on the browser view, and repeating the same composition later can take manual adjustment. The OpenStreetMap Wiki also describes share-panel and other static-image routes; it is a community-edited overview, so verify that a listed service still operates and meets your needs.

Generate a repeatable static map image with an API
A static-map API returns an image from request parameters. It is a better fit when a site generates maps repeatedly or needs controlled dimensions, zoom, markers, paths, or styling. Google Maps Static API and Mapbox Static Images API both provide standalone map images; their setup and request options differ.
| Choice | What the documented workflow supports | Setup and considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Browser screenshot | Manual framing of a visible map; crop after capture. | Useful for a one-off. Preserve the credits in the captured frame and check readability after cropping. |
| Google Maps Static API | URL-based image requests with location, dimensions, zoom, map type, and optional markers; documented output formats include GIF, PNG, and JPEG. | Requires an API key and billing enabled for the project. Use HTTPS on an HTTPS website. Google documents a 16,384-character URL limit. Review the API’s current usage, billing, and exact attribution terms. Google Maps Static API: Get Started |
| Mapbox Static Images API | Standalone images framed by center and zoom or bounds, with optional overlays such as markers and paths; dimensions and format are configurable within documented limits. | Usage is measured by requests. Check current pricing and request constraints. Cache headers can affect how quickly style changes appear. Attribution may be turned off in the image, but required credits still need to appear elsewhere. Mapbox Static Images API |
Choose based on your desired overlays and styling, image dimensions and format, account setup, attribution placement, and expected request volume. The documented information does not establish a directly comparable current price for these services; check their live pricing and terms before estimating your costs. Do not choose a provider on an assumed universal price advantage.
Google Maps Static API: request an image
Google’s API accepts URL parameters for a map image and can be used as an image source in HTML. Its setup requires an API key and a billing-enabled project. Follow Google’s current instructions to create and restrict credentials appropriately, and check the specific API’s terms for your intended use. The documentation describes GIF, PNG, and JPEG image output and a 16,384-character URL limit. Keep generated URLs within that limit, especially if you add many parameters or encoded path data.

Mapbox documents center-and-zoom framing as well as bounds framing, plus overlays such as markers and paths. Choose the framing method that matches your data: a center and zoom is direct for a known point, while bounds can fit a wider area. Confirm the supported image dimensions and format in the current endpoint documentation rather than assuming arbitrary sizes are accepted.

Mapbox’s API enables attribution by default. If you disable attribution in the returned image, that does not remove the responsibility to provide any required credit elsewhere. Mapbox says attribution for static and print maps belongs in text near the image, similar to a photo credit; the required credits depend on map content and can include Mapbox, OpenStreetMap, and other sources. See Mapbox attribution guidance.
Keep attribution visible and check the exact map terms
There is no single attribution rule established here for every map provider, product, style, dataset, or country. Follow the terms for the precise service and map content you use. Keep required credits readable and close enough to the map image that visitors can associate them with it.
For Mapbox static maps, consult its attribution guidance and account for credits required by the particular map content. For Google, do not assume that one Google policy governs every Google Maps product: the cited Map Tiles API policy applies specifically to that API and requires clear Google Maps attribution plus relevant third-party provider credits. Consult the rules for the exact Google API and use case. Google Map Tiles API policies.
For a browser capture, attribution may be part of the visible map itself. Inspect the final crop rather than assuming a credit that appeared in the full browser window will remain in the published image. When required credits cannot be kept legible in the chosen dimensions, revise the layout or use a compliant alternative instead of removing them.

Prepare the image for the page
- Match the layout. Generate or capture an image near the dimensions at which the page will display it. A map scaled too far down can make labels unreadable; scaling a small capture up can make it soft.
- Choose a useful extent. Show enough context to identify the place without making the main location too small. For several locations or a route, use an API overlay if supported rather than trying to compose the map by hand.
- Check the crop on mobile. A desktop-shaped image may be awkward in a narrow column. Verify the actual page layout and ensure the place and credits are still visible.
- Provide context outside the image. Include the address or place name in accessible page text. Do not rely on tiny map labels to communicate essential information.
- Recheck after map changes. API responses may be cached. Mapbox documents cache headers that can affect when style changes appear, so allow for caching when updating a map design.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It takes a website screenshot, not a map-data request: use it when you want to capture a map already framed in a web page, rather than generate a map with map-specific API overlays.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. For a page with a map, for example, the cURL request is:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/locations -o shot.webp
Replace the example page with the URL of the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and request options.
Before the capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

The image is blank or the wrong place
For a browser capture, confirm the selected search result and wait until the map has rendered before taking the screenshot. For an API request, check the coordinates, place identifier or framing parameters, and verify that the response is an image rather than an error response. If a map page uses a consent banner or other overlay, dismiss it before capturing or use a capture workflow that can handle the page overlay.
The labels or marker are too small
Adjust the zoom and composition, or request dimensions appropriate to the display size. Check the result at its final rendered size; a larger file alone will not fix a frame that covers too wide an area.

Required credits disappeared
Review the crop and the provider’s rules for the exact product and data. Restore any visible credits that were cropped out, or place the required text attribution near the image where the provider allows that approach. For Mapbox, turning off image attribution does not eliminate required attribution.

A Google request fails or the URL is rejected
Confirm that the project has an API key and billing enabled, then review the current Google setup guidance and request parameters. Keep the request URL within the documented 16,384-character limit. Use HTTPS for an HTTPS site.
A Mapbox style update is not visible yet
Check the response’s caching behavior and allow for cache headers before concluding that the request parameters are wrong. Consult the current Static Images API documentation for the applicable caching details.
The cost estimate does not match actual use
Mapbox documents request-based usage measurement, while Google directs developers to its usage and billing details. Review the current live terms for your account, expected request volume, and caching behavior; do not rely on an old or unverified price comparison.

Questions developers often ask
Can I use a map screenshot as the only location information?
It is better to pair the image with a written address or place name. A static image is not searchable map text or an interactive location control.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I remove the attribution if the map is only a picture?
Do not assume that a screenshot or static format removes attribution obligations. Check the rules for the exact provider, product, map style, and data, and retain required credits.
Should I use an API for just one map?
Usually a browser capture is simpler for a one-off image. An API becomes more useful when you need repeatable dimensions or parameterized locations, overlays, or styling.
