On a computer, sign out of all Google accounts, sign in first with the Gmail account you want as the default, then add your other accounts. Google often treats the first account signed in as the default, but the behavior is not guaranteed across every Google service. On a phone, account behavior depends on the app and operating system; there is no single setting that makes one Gmail account the universal default.
“Default Gmail” can also mean the mail app that opens when you tap an email link on an iPhone or iPad. That is a separate setting, covered below.
Choose what you want to make the default

Make a Gmail account the default on a computer
- Open Gmail or another Google page.
- Click your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Sign out of all accounts. This resets the sign-in order; merely switching accounts usually changes the active account for that service or tab, not which account Google treats as the default.
- Sign in first with the Google account you want to use as the default.
- After signing in, click your profile picture or initial and choose Add account.
- Sign in to your other Google accounts. The preferred account is now first in the sign-in order.
Google says the default is often the account signed in first, and that settings from it may be used when Google cannot tell which account should apply. This is a common behavior, not an absolute guarantee: products can handle multiple accounts differently. See Google’s instructions for signing in to multiple accounts.

Then visit the Google service where you want that account active and check its profile menu as well. The account shown as active in a particular service may differ from the default sign-in context.

Before signing out: make sure you can complete any required verification, such as a passkey or two-step verification prompt. Signing out affects all Google accounts in that browser, and you may need to sign in again to each one.
Switch accounts in Gmail without changing the default
If you only need to read or send mail from another account, you do not need to reset the sign-in order.
- Gmail on the web: click the profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner, then select the account you want to use.
- Gmail app: tap the profile picture, then choose an account. To add one, tap Add another account, choose Google (or the relevant provider), and complete sign-in and any verification prompts.
Google’s current Gmail app help says you can add up to five email addresses. The app can also show messages from multiple added accounts in All inboxes. That combined view does not merge accounts or set a new default. Details are in Google’s guide to adding another email account in Gmail.

If you use separate work and personal accounts every day, separate browser profiles are often easier and safer than repeatedly changing which Google account signs in first. A Chrome profile keeps browser information such as bookmarks, history, passwords, and settings separate.
- In Chrome, open the profile control.
- Choose Add Chrome profile (the wording may vary slightly by version).
- Name the profile and choose a color or image so it is easy to recognize.
- Sign in with the Google account intended for that profile, then open Gmail there.
Use the work profile for work Gmail, Drive, and other work services, and the personal profile for personal services. A Chrome profile is a separate browser environment, not a change to Google’s account order everywhere; take care to open the right profile. See Google’s Chrome profile guidance.
Make Gmail the default mail app on iPhone or iPad
If you want Gmail to open when you tap an email address or mail link, change the device’s default mail app—not the default Google account.
- Install Gmail if it is not already on the device.
- Open the iPhone or iPad’s Default Apps settings.
- Choose Mail or Email, depending on the wording on your device.
- Select Gmail.
Google’s current help says this feature requires iOS or iPadOS 18.0 or later. It determines which app handles mail links; it does not choose which Gmail address is active inside Gmail. See Google’s default apps instructions.

If Gmail keeps opening the wrong account
- Check the active address. Open the profile menu and read the email address, rather than relying on the account name or profile image.
- Check the browser and profile. Account order can differ between browsers and Chrome profiles. Open Gmail in the profile where you intend to use it.
- Reset the web sign-in order. Sign out of all Google accounts, sign in first to the intended default, then add the others.
- Check the Gmail bookmark. A saved URL containing a numbered path such as
/mail/u/1/can point to a particular account slot. Open the base Gmail address or select the account from the profile menu instead. - If only one Google app is wrong, switch accounts in that app. A browser-wide reset may not be necessary.
- For work or school accounts, check with the administrator. Organization policies can affect available sign-in options or account behavior.
- Use private browsing only for temporary access. A private window has a separate sign-in state; it is not a lasting default-account change.
Clearing cookies is not usually the first fix: it can sign you out of other sites and remove useful sign-in state. Consider it only if the simpler steps fail and you are prepared to sign in again.
What changing the default does—and does not do
Changing the sign-in order does not combine or transfer accounts. It does not move messages, forward email, change an address, delete an account, or change account ownership. It also does not automatically make that address the sender for every message. Each account remains separate, although Google may use the default account’s settings when it cannot determine which signed-in account applies.
If you want to send from another address, configure Gmail’s send-from or alias options separately; changing the default account is not the same thing. If you only want a unified view on a phone, use All inboxes in the Gmail app rather than trying to change the account order.

Removing an account from a browser’s sign-in page is different from deleting the Google Account. On the web, sign out of all accounts, choose Remove an account on the sign-in page, then select Remove beside the account. This removes it from that browser’s sign-in list; you may need to repeat the process in other browsers.
In the Gmail app, tap the profile picture, choose Manage accounts on this device, select the account, then choose Remove from this device. That removes its sign-in from the app/device, not the underlying Google Account. See Google’s account sign-in help and Gmail app account guidance.

Can I change the default Gmail account without signing out?
You can switch the active account from Gmail’s profile menu, but that does not reliably change Google’s default sign-in order. To reset the web default, sign out of all accounts and sign in first with the account you want to use.
Does changing the default Google account change Gmail on my phone?
Not necessarily. Google says default-account behavior can vary by operating system and app. Choose the account in the Gmail app, or use separate browser profiles where available.
Can I have two Gmail accounts open at once?
Yes. Google supports signing in to multiple accounts and switching from the account menu, though some Google products handle multiple accounts differently.
