Discord has a built-in Soundboard: join a voice channel on the desktop app or in a browser, open Soundboard, choose Add Sound, and upload a clip. You need the server’s Create Expressions permission to add sounds; members need Use Soundboard to play them. Discord’s mobile app can play available sounds, but its current guide directs users to desktop or browser to upload custom ones.
What you need
- A Discord account and access to the server where you want the sound.
- The desktop app or Discord in a browser to upload a custom clip.
- Permission to join a voice channel and the relevant server permissions: Create Expressions to add sounds and Use Soundboard to play them.
- An audio file accepted by Discord’s upload dialog. Discord’s public guide does not specify a definitive format, maximum duration, or Soundboard-specific file-size limit, so rely on the current upload dialog rather than assuming a particular limit.
Discord requires uploaded sounds to follow its Terms of Service, Community Guidelines, and intellectual-property rules. Use audio you have permission to share.
How to add a custom sound
- Open Discord in the desktop app or a browser and select the server.
- Join the voice channel where you want to use the sound.
- Open the Soundboard panel from the voice-channel interface. Its icon or placement can vary between Discord versions and layouts.
- Select Add Sound.
- Choose the audio file, then fill in the fields Discord presents, such as a sound name and emoji. Review the volume control if it appears.
- Save or upload the sound. Confirm it appears in that server’s Soundboard list.
- Play it once and ask someone in the channel to confirm the level is clear.
Discord’s documented flow is to open Soundboard and select Add Sound on desktop or in a browser. The upload process does not require installing a bot or routing audio through a virtual microphone.
How to play a sound
Join the voice channel, open Soundboard, and select the sound’s play control. On desktop, hovering over a sound may reveal its controls. Discord also offers a preview control so you can listen privately before playing it to the channel, and a star control for favoriting sounds. Participants who can hear the voice channel can hear a sound played there.

On mobile, join voice and open Soundboard to tap an available sound. The mobile app is useful for playback, but Discord’s current guide says custom uploads are made on desktop or in a browser.
Set who can play, add, or manage sounds
These permissions control different actions:
- Use Soundboard: allows members to play sounds. It can be controlled across the server or for an individual voice channel.
- Create Expressions: allows members to add custom sounds.
- Manage Expressions: allows members to edit or remove custom sounds.
For server-wide role permissions, open Server Settings → Roles → select a role → Permissions, then adjust the relevant permission. For a channel-specific rule, open Edit Channel → Permissions for the voice channel and adjust the role or member’s access there. To manage uploaded sounds, go to Server Settings → Soundboard. Labels and layout can vary, but the permission names identify the controls.
If someone can play sounds but cannot upload one, check Create Expressions before assuming they need Nitro. If they cannot edit or delete a sound, check Manage Expressions.

Do you need Nitro?

Discord’s plan comparison lists cross-server Soundboard access with Nitro, not Nitro Basic. If you only want a collection for one server, Nitro is not the reason to buy a subscription.
How many sounds can a server store?
Discord’s listed Soundboard capacity depends on server level. The limits below are from Discord’s caps information available on August 18, 2026:

These are sound slots, not file-size or duration limits. See Discord’s server caps and Server Boosting FAQ for the published limits. If the server is full, remove unused sounds or consider whether more slots are worth boosting for the whole server.

Prepare a clip that sounds good
- Trim silence from the start and end so playback feels immediate.
- Keep it short and recognizable; there is no need to add long audio for a simple sound effect.
- Normalize uneven levels lightly and avoid clipping or distortion.
- Use a short, descriptive name so members can find the sound.
- Test in a quiet or low-traffic voice channel before building a large collection.
An audio editor such as Audacity can help trim or normalize a clip, but it is optional. Do not treat Discord’s general file-sharing limit as the Soundboard’s own specification; the public Soundboard guide does not state definitive accepted formats, duration, or a dedicated file-size cap.
Troubleshoot Soundboard problems
The Soundboard button is missing
- Make sure you have joined a voice channel.
- Look for Soundboard in the voice-channel interface; its placement may differ by client layout.
- Ask an administrator to check whether you have Use Soundboard permission in that channel.
- If it is still missing, update or restart the desktop app, or compare with Discord in a browser.
“Add Sound” is missing or unavailable
Use the desktop app or browser, join a voice channel, open Soundboard, and check that you have Create Expressions. Also check whether the server has reached its sound-slot limit and whether you are in the intended server. Nitro is not the first thing to check.
Discord rejects the file
Read the error shown in the current upload dialog. As a practical retry, export a shorter, smaller clip in a common audio format, use a simple filename, and try the desktop app and browser in turn. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed Discord requirements: the public guide does not publish a definitive format, duration, or Soundboard-specific size limit. General account upload limits and Soundboard validation are separate issues.

The sound plays, but someone cannot hear it
- Confirm you used the channel-play control, not only the private preview control.
- Ask the listener to check whether they are deafened and whether their Soundboard volume is at zero.
- Check the listener’s voice output and channel access, and make sure the clip is not silent or extremely quiet.
- Confirm you are testing in the server and voice channel that contain the sound.
Listeners can adjust their own Soundboard level at User Settings → Voice & Video → Soundboard → Soundboard Volume. Discord says this setting syncs across devices; at 0%, the listener will not hear Soundboard sounds. A deafened user will not hear playback.
Optional: entrance sounds and a Windows shortcut
Nitro users can configure a sound to play when they join a server voice channel under User Settings → Voice & Video → Soundboard, including a default or per-server choice. Discord notes that a deafened user will not hear an entrance sound.

When an alternative makes sense
For a shared collection of short clips inside one Discord server, the native Soundboard is usually the simplest option: it needs no bot and plays through the voice interface. Consider a bot, hotkey utility, virtual audio device, or streaming/audio-routing tool only if you need automated commands, personal hotkeys across voice apps, longer or continuous audio, or more advanced mixing. Those setups solve a different problem and may require extra permissions, software, and audio configuration.
