To link WhatsApp to a Windows PC or Mac, open WhatsApp Web or install the official app from whatsapp.com/download. Then authorize the computer from WhatsApp on your primary Android phone or iPhone by opening Linked devices and scanning the QR code. The computer will use the same WhatsApp account; you do not create a second account.
Before you start
- An active WhatsApp account on your primary Android phone or iPhone
- Access to that phone during the initial linking process
- An internet-connected Windows PC or Mac
- A current, supported browser or the official WhatsApp Desktop application
- Your phone passcode, fingerprint, Face ID or Touch ID if WhatsApp asks you to unlock the device
Use only the official address web.whatsapp.com. Do not scan QR codes displayed by advertisements, unsolicited messages or unknown support pages.
Fastest method: link WhatsApp Web
- On the computer, open web.whatsapp.com.
- Wait for the QR code to appear and keep it visible.
- Open WhatsApp on your phone.
- Follow the Android or iPhone instructions below.
- Scan the QR code shown on the computer and wait for your chats to synchronize.
How to link WhatsApp to a PC on Android
- Open WhatsApp on your Android phone.
- Tap the three-dot More options menu.
- Tap Linked devices.
- Tap Link a device.
- Unlock your phone if prompted.
- Point the phone at the QR code on the PC screen.
- Wait for the computer to change from the login screen to your chat list.
These labels can move slightly after WhatsApp updates, but the linking process remains under Linked devices. WhatsApp’s official device-linking guidance is available in its device-linking instructions.

How to link WhatsApp to a PC on iPhone
- Open WhatsApp Web on the computer, or open the official WhatsApp Desktop app.
- Leave the QR code visible.
- Open WhatsApp on the iPhone.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Linked Devices.
- Tap Link a Device.
- Authenticate with your passcode, Face ID or Touch ID if requested.
- Scan the QR code on the computer.
- Wait for your conversations to load.
WhatsApp Web versus WhatsApp Desktop

WhatsApp Web runs in a supported desktop browser. WhatsApp Desktop is an installed application. Both are companion sessions for the same WhatsApp account and use the phone’s Linked devices menu.

Download the desktop application only from the official WhatsApp download page or the relevant official app store. Avoid unofficial wrappers, emulators, “WhatsApp cloners” and third-party QR-login utilities.
How to link WhatsApp without scanning a QR code
Some WhatsApp Web and Windows app login screens offer Link with phone number. Select it, enter the WhatsApp phone number when asked, and follow the on-screen instructions. The computer may display an eight-character code that you approve or enter on the phone.

This option was described by Meta as a way to assist people who cannot reliably scan a QR code. It may not appear for every account, platform or app version. Confirm that the PC is linked
Do not assume linking succeeded merely because the phone scanned the code. Check both places:

- The computer has changed to the WhatsApp chat interface and conversations are beginning to appear.
- The computer, browser or app appears under the phone’s Linked devices list.
- The device name and recent activity look familiar.
WhatsApp’s current official guidance says one primary phone can have up to four linked devices. This limit applies to linked devices generally, not necessarily four computers.
How to log out of WhatsApp on a computer remotely
- Open WhatsApp on your primary phone.
- Go to Linked devices.
- Tap the computer session you want to remove.
- Tap Log out.
Use this immediately for a public, shared, lost or stolen computer. Inspect the list periodically and remove every session you do not recognize. Closing a browser window is not a substitute for unlinking a computer you no longer trust.

WhatsApp PC linking problems and fixes
| Problem | What to try first |

| QR code will not scan | Enlarge the QR code, increase screen brightness, reduce glare, clean the camera lens and hold the phone steady. Refresh the code if it has expired. |
| The scanner does not open | Confirm you are using the correct Android or iPhone menu, update WhatsApp, then close and reopen the app. |
| The QR scan succeeds but chats do not load | Check the internet connection on both devices, refresh WhatsApp Web or restart Desktop, and wait briefly for synchronization. |
| Linking remains stuck | Log out the stalled session from Linked devices, restart the browser, app and phone, and try again. |
| “Link a device” is missing | Use the platform-specific path above, update WhatsApp through the official app store and make sure you are not using an unofficial or modified app. |
| The phone camera is broken | Use Link with phone number if that option appears on the computer. |
| The site will not work on a work network | Try another supported browser or the official Desktop app if permitted. VPNs, corporate proxies, firewalls and browser extensions can interfere with login scripts, cookies or connections. |
A private or incognito window can be useful as a diagnostic test, although normal browser use may require cookies. If repeated attempts fail, check whether WhatsApp is experiencing a service problem rather than repeatedly scanning the same code.
Does the phone need to stay nearby?
The primary phone is required to register the WhatsApp account and authorize a new linked device. Do not interpret a linked session as a replacement for the primary phone. WhatsApp’s multi-device behavior and session rules can change, so avoid relying on absolute claims that the phone never needs an internet connection or that a computer session will remain active indefinitely.

Is it safe to link WhatsApp to a PC?
- Check that the address is exactly web.whatsapp.com before scanning.
- Use the official Desktop download page, not a third-party installer.
- Never scan a QR code sent by an unknown person or displayed on an unsolicited page.
- Review Linked devices and log out unfamiliar sessions immediately.
- On a public or work computer, avoid persistent sign-in and unlink the session after use.
- Remember that browser history, downloaded media and desktop notifications may remain on a shared computer.
- If an unexpected logout or unfamiliar session suggests unauthorized access, secure the account and review WhatsApp’s security settings, including two-step verification.
Special cases
A WhatsApp Business account can also use linked devices, but business tools such as catalogs, labels, automated messages and team workflows may not behave identically across phone, Web and Desktop versions.
If a computer is lost or stolen, open Linked devices on the phone and log out that session. If the phone itself is lost, secure the phone number and WhatsApp account through WhatsApp’s account-recovery process; changing a PC password does not protect the WhatsApp account.
