WordPress’s built-in comment moderation can hold comments for approval, but it does not provide a visitor-facing button for reporting a comment that is already published. To let readers flag visible comments, install a reporting plugin such as Safe Report Comments, set its report threshold, and review flagged comments through the usual WordPress moderation screen.
How comment reporting differs from WordPress moderation
WordPress core moderation controls whether submitted comments appear on your site. You can require approval before comments are published or hold comments that meet rules you configure. The official WordPress comment moderation guide describes this as preventing comments from appearing without your express approval.

That is different from letting a visitor flag an inappropriate comment that is already visible. Core moderation and spam controls do not, by themselves, add a report link to published comments. For that reader-facing action, use a reporting plugin.
Add a report link with Safe Report Comments
Safe Report Comments is one documented option. Its WordPress.org listing says it appends a report link to comments and places it beside the reply link using the comment’s data-commentid attribute. When the configured number of reports is reached, the comment goes into moderation; a moderator decides what to do with it.
#1 Best Overall
- In your WordPress dashboard, open Plugins → Add New Plugin and search the WordPress.org directory for “Safe Report Comments.” Confirm the listing and compatibility information before installing.
- Install and activate the plugin, then inspect its current settings and inline documentation. The plugin listing does not establish a universal settings-screen path, so follow the labels shown by the version you install.
- Set the report threshold—the number of reports required before a comment is sent to moderation. Choose a value that gives you a useful signal without allowing a single accidental click or coordinated reporting to determine the outcome automatically.
- View the site as a visitor and test the report link on comments using your active theme. Test both ordinary comments and deeply threaded replies, then submit a test report and confirm what happens when the threshold is met.
The listing says the plugin is designed to work with most existing themes, but theme behavior is not guaranteed. Its placement relies on comment markup, so check the link’s visibility and position on your actual site rather than assuming the directory description applies to every theme.
Review flagged comments in WordPress
When a report sends a comment to moderation, review it in the dashboard’s comments screen. WordPress provides actions to approve, reply to, edit, mark as spam, or trash a comment. A report is a request for human review, not proof that a comment violates your site’s rules.
- Approve a comment that is acceptable and should remain visible.
- Edit it if a limited correction is appropriate under your site’s policies.
- Reply if a response is useful and safe to publish.
- Mark as spam or trash it when that is the appropriate outcome.
Other options and when to use them
| Option | What it does | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress core moderation | Holds new or suspicious comments for review; configured under Settings → Discussion. | Useful when you want approval before publication or rules that hold comments based on links or other configured criteria. Rules can also hold acceptable comments for review. See WordPress’s guide to comment spam. |
| Safe Report Comments | Adds a visitor report link and sends a comment to moderation after a configured report threshold. | Test threshold behavior and link placement with your theme and threading settings. The WordPress.org listing, accessed September 30, 2026, showed version 0.5.0, 100+ active installations, WordPress 6.4 or higher, testing through WordPress 7.0.6, PHP 7.4 or higher, and a 3/5 rating from seven ratings. These are directory metadata, not evidence of performance on your site; check the current listing for changes. |
| Zeno Report Comments | Another visitor-reporting plugin with threshold-based moderation. | Its listing notes that automatic mode can omit the report link at the last level of threaded comments. Check the plugin listing and test it against your comment depth and theme. |
You can browse the WordPress.org flagging and content moderation plugin categories for other tools, but verify that a candidate actually lets visitors report published comments before installing it.
Quick Recap
Before enabling reports on a live site
- Read the plugin’s current compatibility details and support information in the WordPress.org directory; plugin versions and directory metadata change over time.
- Test report links on the site’s real theme, including the deepest threaded replies visitors can reach.
- Confirm the configured threshold sends a comment to the expected moderation queue and that moderators can find and act on it.
- Make sure moderators treat reports as signals to assess against your comment policy, not automatic verdicts.
