Let the browser download the screenshot bytes you already generated: turn them into a Blob, create a temporary blob: URL, and put that URL on an anchor with a useful filename. If a backend or hosted renderer creates the image, return it from a same-origin download route with the correct media type and Content-Disposition header. The HTML download attribute is only a hint, so browser settings can still save, prompt, or open the file.
Choose the download path that matches where the screenshot is made

Also decide whether the result is same-origin or cross-origin, which format you will deliver, how filenames are sanitized, whether users must choose a display surface, and how private URLs or credentials are protected.
Download a screenshot generated in the browser
1. Produce a PNG Blob
A canvas can encode its pixels as a PNG Blob. The following example keeps the current object URL so a second click can reuse it, and revokes the previous URL when a new capture replaces it.

});Keep the URL valid until the download action has had a chance to start. Revoke it when the screenshot is replaced or when the page no longer needs it. The MDN Element Capture example follows this pattern and also cleans up capture tracks and bitmaps.

2. Use a descriptive, safe filename
Use the extension that matches the actual bytes, such as .png, .jpg, or .webp. Remove path separators, control characters, and user-supplied markup from names. For example, convert a page title to a short slug and append a timestamp if users may download several captures.
3. Treat download as a hint
According to MDN’s anchor documentation, download works with same-origin URLs and with blob: and data: URLs. The browser can prefer a server’s Content-Disposition filename, the URL path, or the media type, and user settings determine whether it saves, prompts, or opens the resource.

Return a server-generated screenshot as a download
Use an application-controlled route
When a renderer creates the image, have your own endpoint authenticate the request, obtain the bytes, and return them. This avoids exposing capture credentials and gives you control over cross-origin delivery.

<PNG bytes>If you generate JPEG or WebP, change both the media type and filename extension. For private captures, authorize the requesting user and avoid putting long-lived provider URLs in public page markup. A same-origin response also avoids relying on download for a cross-origin URL.

When the source service is cross-origin
Do not point an anchor directly at an unrelated screenshot host and assume the attribute will force a download. Fetch the image through an approved server route, or use a provider’s documented download response and authentication flow. Configure CORS only when the browser truly needs to read the bytes and the policy can be safely restricted.
Render a remote page before offering its file
Hosted browser APIs can capture a URL or supplied HTML, then return image bytes. Cloudflare Browser Run’s documented /screenshot endpoint accepts a URL or HTML and supports viewport control, selector capture, and full-page capture; it can be called with a REST API token or a Workers Binding. Its /snapshot endpoint can return a screenshot alongside other page representations. These capabilities describe those endpoints, not every screenshot provider, so verify authentication, retention, regional availability, and pricing before adopting one.

If you prefer a library in your own runtime, capture-website documents saving a capture to a file or returning screenshot bytes as a buffer, with output type and dimensions options.

The Screen Capture API asks the user to choose a display surface. MDN’s Screen Capture API documentation notes that permission is requested even when policy allows capture, and the specification requires recent user interaction. Permissions Policy can restrict display capture as well. Use this route when the user explicitly wants their own tab or screen; use server-side rendering when you need a repeatable screenshot of a remote URL without showing a browser picker.
