To let readers follow a particular WordPress author, link to that author’s RSS feed. That delivers new posts to an RSS reader, not an email inbox. For email, Jetpack Newsletter documents site-wide and category subscriptions, but its documented options do not let visitors choose an author. If you need email alerts for selected authors, verify a plugin that explicitly supports author-level preferences or build a custom integration.

Choose the kind of subscription readers need

“Subscribe to an author” can mean two different things: follow that author’s posts in an RSS reader, or receive email when the author publishes. WordPress documents a direct author-specific route for RSS. Email subscriptions require a separate setup, and the documented Jetpack controls are not author-specific.

Option Scope Delivery Content covered
Author RSS feed One author RSS reader Author feed; see WordPress’s author_feed_link reference
Jetpack Newsletter Site-wide, with category subscriptions available Email New standard posts; pages and custom post types do not trigger the documented notification, according to Jetpack’s Newsletter documentation
Author-filtered email plugin or custom integration Must be verified as author-specific Email Depends on the plugin or implementation; the cited sources do not establish a complete feature comparison

How to offer an author’s RSS feed

WordPress developer documentation identifies author feeds and the author_feed_link hook; it lists RSS2 and Atom feed types. Add a clearly labeled link such as “Follow [Author] via RSS” to the author’s archive or profile. The WordPress Feeds handbook explains that feeds provide content updates.

Readers need an RSS reader to follow the link. A feed is not an email signup form, and you should not assume the active theme displays an author-feed link automatically. Place the link where visitors can find it and test that it opens the intended author’s feed.

How to set up email subscriptions with Jetpack

Jetpack Newsletter provides a Subscribe Block for a post, page, or widget area, and its documentation also describes a shortcode. Follow the current Jetpack Newsletter setup instructions to enable the feature and add the form. The documented setting says: “Let visitors subscribe to this site and receive emails when you publish a post.”

Jetpack’s documented new-post notifications apply to standard posts. Publishing a page or custom post type does not trigger the notification described in its setup documentation. Check that this matches the content your site publishes before relying on it.

Use categories for topic choices, not author choices

The Jetpack Subscribe Block documentation describes subscriptions to selected newsletter categories. That lets readers choose topics, but the cited documentation does not describe selecting individual authors. Do not present category subscriptions as an author-specific email feature.

What to verify before choosing an author-email plugin

If visitors must choose one or more authors and receive email only when those authors publish, confirm the feature in the plugin’s current documentation before promising it. Generic wording such as “post notifications” does not establish author-level selection.

  • Readers can select individual authors, rather than only categories or the whole site.
  • There are confirmation and unsubscribe controls, plus a way to manage subscriber preferences.
  • The plugin supports the post types your site uses.
  • Its documentation explains how messages are delivered and what setup that requires.
  • It is maintained and compatible with the WordPress version and other relevant components on your site.

The sources cited here do not establish a particular maintained plugin with all of these properties. If no suitable plugin can be verified, treat author-selected email as a custom integration requirement rather than assuming a standard WordPress or Jetpack setting provides it.

Implementation and testing checklist

  1. Decide whether readers need RSS, email, or both.
  2. For RSS, expose the author feed on that author’s archive or profile and label it as an RSS-reader option. WordPress’s author_feed_link reference documents the author-feed route.
  3. For site-wide or category email, enable Jetpack Newsletter and place and configure its Subscribe Block. Confirm that its standard-post notification behavior fits your site.
  4. For author-selected email, verify a suitable plugin’s author-level controls or arrange a custom integration before advertising the feature.
  5. Test with a non-admin visitor account and a newly published standard post. If pages or custom post types matter, check those separately rather than assuming they send Jetpack notifications.

WordPress.com also documents email and Reader blog subscriptions, with subscriber notification choices, in its blog subscription guide. That describes a WordPress.com experience; it does not establish an author-specific email preference control for a self-hosted WordPress site.
