Windows 11 separates sleep, display shutoff, automatic locking, and sign-in. For a temporary task, use Microsoft PowerToys Awake; for a lasting change, adjust Settings > System > Power & battery. If the computer must keep working after you lock it, configure the locked-console display timeout instead—PowerToys Awake does not operate on the Windows lock screen.
Choose the narrowest change that solves your problem. Keeping a PC awake does not, by itself, remove the lock screen or stop Windows from requiring authentication.
First, identify what Windows is doing

Windows uses separate display timers for an unlocked session and the locked screen. Microsoft identifies these as VIDEOIDLE and VIDEOCONLOCK, respectively (Microsoft documentation).

Stop Windows 11 from sleeping
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select System, then Power & battery.
- Expand Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Set the screen and sleep values for both On battery power and When plugged in.
- Choose Never only for the condition and period you actually need, or select a longer interval.
Laptops have independent battery and AC settings. Changing only the plugged-in value will not prevent sleep when the charger is disconnected. Settings labels can move slightly between Windows 11 releases and device types.

This change keeps Windows from automatically entering sleep under the selected conditions; it does not necessarily prevent a screen saver, Dynamic Lock, sign-in policy, hibernation, lid action, firmware protection, or administrator rule. Microsoft recommends sensible sleep intervals and requiring sign-in after waking (Microsoft security guidance).
Keep the display on—or let it turn off
If a rendering job or download only needs the computer awake, leave the display timeout in place and change only the sleep timeout. This saves power and avoids leaving a static image on an OLED panel.
If a presentation, kiosk, monitoring dashboard, or remote demonstration must remain visible, set the relevant display timeout to Never in the same Power & battery page. A display timer and a sleep timer are separate controls.

Use PowerToys Awake for a temporary session
PowerToys Awake is Microsoft’s free, reversible option for an active, unlocked session. It holds the computer awake without permanently changing the selected Windows power plan (Awake documentation). Install PowerToys from the official project (GitHub), then:

- Open PowerToys Settings.
- Select Awake and turn on Enable Awake.
- Choose Keep using the selected power plan, Keep awake indefinitely, Keep awake for a time interval, or Keep awake until expiration.
- Turn on Keep screen on only if the display must remain lit.
- Use the PowerToys tray icon to change or disable the mode when finished.
Awake prevents normal sleep while the user session is active, but it can still be overridden by manually selecting Sleep or Hibernate and by hardware, thermal, battery, firmware, or administrator behavior. Most importantly, Microsoft states that Awake does not work once the Windows lock screen is displayed because that screen runs in a separate security context.
Stop Windows from locking automatically
Check Dynamic Lock
If Windows locks when you walk away with a paired phone, open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Dynamic lock and disable the option that allows Windows to lock when the Bluetooth device leaves range. Availability and wording can vary by configuration.
Check the screen saver
Go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Screen saver. Review the Wait period and the On resume, display logon screen option. Clearing the logon-screen option changes that screen-saver behavior only; it does not remove other Windows authentication or policy requirements.

In Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options, review when Windows requires sign-in after you have been away or after waking. A work- or school-managed device may hide or enforce this setting. Avoid disabling authentication on portable, shared, or sensitive computers.

To secure the session while leaving applications and files open, press Windows + L (Microsoft account-access guidance).
Keep the computer active while it is locked
PowerToys Awake cannot solve this case. If the issue is that the monitor powers off soon after pressing Windows + L, expose Windows’ hidden console-lock display setting from an Administrator Command Prompt:
powercfg.exe -attributes SUB_VIDEO 8EC4B3A5-6868-48c2-BE75-4F3044BE88A7 -ATTRIB_HIDEThen open the advanced settings for the current power plan and look under display settings for Console lock display off timeout. Microsoft documents a default locked-screen display timeout of about 60 seconds on relevant configurations, but the value is not an immutable rule for every device (Microsoft troubleshooting documentation).
You can also set the unlocked and locked display timers from an elevated Command Prompt:

<seconds>with the desired timeout. These commands control display power-off, not every form of system sleep or hibernation.
The PC can remain locked and secure while applications continue running, subject to its separate sleep, hibernation, firmware, thermal, battery, and administrator policies.

There is no universal Disable lock screen switch in the normal Windows 11 Settings app. Settings primarily controls sleep, display timers, screen-saver behavior, Dynamic Lock, and when sign-in is required.
Policy-based controls may affect the lock screen, but they are edition- and administrator-dependent. gpedit.msc is generally available on Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions rather than standard Home installations; a managed computer may ignore or overwrite such a policy. Registry and Group Policy workarounds are therefore advanced, version-sensitive options—not a general fix for sleep.
Removing authentication weakens physical security. Do not do it on a work, school, shared, portable, or otherwise accessible device when simply keeping the display or system awake would meet the need.

Power, heat, and security trade-offs
- Battery: “Never” can drain a laptop quickly, especially with the display on.
- Heat and fans: sustained rendering or processing can keep the system warm; thermal protection may still intervene.
- OLED panels: a static image left on-screen for long periods can increase image-retention risk.
- Physical access: an awake, unlocked computer exposes open sessions and data. Lock it with Windows + L when you leave.
- Managed devices: organization policies, Modern Standby, lid settings, critical-battery actions, drivers, BIOS settings, and scheduled maintenance can override or supplement these controls.
Restore normal behavior
- Return screen and sleep timers to their previous battery and plugged-in values.
- In PowerToys, turn off Enable Awake or close the active keep-awake mode.
- Re-enable screen-saver sign-in, Dynamic Lock, or sign-in-after-wake protections you previously changed.
- To hide the advanced console-lock setting again, run this command as administrator:
powercfg.exe -attributes SUB_VIDEO 8EC4B3A5-6868-48c2-BE75-4F3044BE88A7 +ATTRIB_HIDE - Restart Windows if a policy or power-plan change is not reflected immediately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does PowerToys Awake work at the lock screen?
No. Microsoft says Awake works in the active user session, not in the separate security context used by the Windows lock screen.
Does setting sleep to Never disable the lock screen?
No. Sleep, display timeout, screen saver, Dynamic Lock, and sign-in requirements are separate controls.
Why does the monitor turn off after I press Windows + L?
The locked-console display timeout, exposed as `VIDEOCONLOCK`, can be shorter than the normal unlocked display timeout.
How do I stop Dynamic Lock?
Open Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options > Dynamic lock and turn off the option that locks Windows when the paired Bluetooth device leaves range.
Can Windows 11 Home remove the lock screen?
Windows 11 Home does not generally include the Group Policy editor used for some policy-based lock-screen controls, and managed policies can override changes on any edition.
How do I keep downloads running while the laptop is locked?

Is it safe to leave a laptop awake overnight?
