If a table’s column-header row is stranded at the bottom of a PDF page, make it a repeating table header; if the stranded heading is a separate title paragraph, make that paragraph stay with the content that follows. In Microsoft Word, these are different settings. LibreOffice Writer also provides table text-flow controls for repeating headers and allowing tables to split across pages. Export the document to PDF and check the affected page boundary after making the change.
First identify what is stranded
Look at the source document, not just the PDF. A row inside the table that contains column labels needs a table-header setting. A title or explanatory sentence above the table is a paragraph and needs a paragraph-pagination setting. Treating one as the other can leave the problem unchanged: repeating a table row does not keep an outside title with the table, and keeping a paragraph with the next paragraph does not repeat column labels on later pages.
- Column labels are a table row: repeat the first row, or consecutive header rows, when the table continues across pages.
- A title above the table is alone: keep that paragraph with the next paragraph so it travels with the table or its first useful content.
- The whole table must stay on one page: use a no-split or keep-together option only if the table fits; otherwise it may create a large blank area or still need to break.
Repeat a table header in Microsoft Word
For a table that spans pages, designate its actual first row or consecutive first rows as headers. Word can then show those rows again at the top of pages reached by automatic pagination.
Recommended Free Tools
- In the document, select the first row of the table. If the table has more than one header row, select the consecutive rows at the top. The selection must include the table’s first row.
- Open Table Layout and choose Repeat Header Rows. Depending on the Word version and window width, the table layout tab may appear only when the cursor is inside the table.
- Check the table in Print Layout. If it spans pages, confirm that the column labels appear above the continued rows.
- Export or print to PDF, then inspect the page boundary in the PDF itself.
Microsoft also documents the row setting in Table Properties > Row > Repeat as header row at the top of each page. The wording and tab layout can vary by platform and Word edition; the documented instructions cover Word for Microsoft 365 and listed desktop releases, and the repeated headings are visible in Print Layout or when printing.

If the header does not repeat
Check whether a manual page break was inserted inside the table. Microsoft’s support guidance says repeating headers do not work across a manual page break within a table. Remove that break if automatic pagination is appropriate, or restructure the table and break location, then inspect the result again. Do not assume the header setting will override a manually forced break.
Keep a separate table title with the table in Word
If the stranded item is a paragraph above the table—not a row in it—select that paragraph and use Word’s paragraph pagination controls. Open the paragraph settings’ Line and Page Breaks options and enable Keep with next. This keeps the title paragraph with the next paragraph, which may be the first paragraph in the table or another explanatory line. Microsoft describes the control this way: “Keep with next prevents breaks between paragraphs you want to stay together.”
Keep lines together is a different control: it prevents the lines of a paragraph from splitting across pages. It may help when a multi-line title itself is divided, but it does not repeat a table’s header row. Use these controls narrowly. Applying Keep with next to many paragraphs can chain them together, push substantial content forward, and leave unwanted whitespace.

Set table flow in LibreOffice Writer
Writer’s table text-flow settings provide controls for whether a table may split across pages and whether a header repeats. Open the table’s properties and inspect its Text Flow settings for the split and header options. The exact interface can vary by release; LibreOffice Help’s cited guidance is its rolling “latest” documentation, so check the labels in the version you use.
For a long table, allow it to split and enable repeating headers so readers retain the column labels on continuation pages. If you disable splitting to keep the whole table together, confirm that the table fits in the available page area. A table that cannot fit may move, leave whitespace, or still need a different layout. Export a PDF and verify the actual pagination rather than relying only on the editing view.
Choose the setting that matches the layout problem
| What is happening | Use this approach | Trade-off or check |
|---|---|---|
| A table spans pages and column labels disappear after the first page | Mark the first table row or consecutive top rows as repeating headers. | In Word, a manual page break inside the table prevents repetition across that break. |
| A title paragraph sits at the foot of a page while the table begins on the next | Apply Keep with next to the title paragraph. | It is a paragraph setting, not a repeating-header setting; avoid chaining it across many paragraphs. |
| A paragraph’s lines split across a page boundary | Use Keep lines together for that paragraph. | This does not keep the paragraph with the table or repeat a table row. |
| The whole table should not split | Use the table’s text-flow or keep-together controls where available. | Only choose this when the table fits acceptably; otherwise it can create whitespace or force awkward pagination. |
For paginated documents generally, RFC Editor guidance recommends including column headings when a long table continues over page breaks and keeping a table with its title where possible. These are useful layout goals, but the practical setting depends on whether the heading is inside or outside the table.

Verify the exported PDF
- Save the document after changing the row, paragraph, or table-flow setting.
- Export or print to PDF using the same page size and layout you intend to distribute.
- Inspect the page before the break and the first page of the continuation. Confirm that a separate title has not been left behind and that column labels recur where the table continues.
- Repeat the check after editing table contents, fonts, margins, or page settings. Any of these can change pagination and move the affected boundary.
Check the PDF rather than relying solely on the editor view: the final page layout is what readers receive, and pagination can shift as the document changes.

Common problems and fixes
The table header appears only on the first page
Confirm that the row was marked as a repeating header and that it is part of the table’s first row or consecutive top rows. In Word, check for a manual page break inside the table; automatic pagination is required for repeated headers to work across pages.
The title still sits by itself
Check that the title is a separate paragraph and apply Keep with next to that paragraph. If another explanatory paragraph sits between the title and table, keeping the title with only that paragraph may not be enough; apply the setting deliberately so the title remains connected to the next relevant content without chaining an unnecessarily large block.

A large blank area appears above the table
Look for keep settings applied to a run of paragraphs, or a table setting that prevents splitting. Narrow the settings to the title or the rows that genuinely need to stay together. If the table is longer than the available page area, allowing it to split with repeated column headings is generally more useful than trying to keep the entire table on one page.
The editor looks right, but the PDF does not
Re-export after changing the settings and inspect the resulting PDF. Check that the intended paper size, margins, and page layout are in effect, and that no manual break is controlling the location. Recheck after subsequent edits because even small content changes can move a page boundary.
What these controls do not establish
The Word and LibreOffice controls described here are application-specific. They should not be treated as a universal CSS, LaTeX, or PDF-library rule: behavior in those systems depends on the particular rendering engine and its current documentation. If a document is generated programmatically, identify its engine and consult that engine’s guidance rather than assuming a Word setting has an equivalent effect.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a Word or LibreOffice PDF-pagination control. If you also need a screenshot of a webpage, a single request can capture it; this will not fix or validate the layout of a PDF exported from a desktop document editor.
For example, capture a web page as WebP with cURL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Its clean-shot process accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. An MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions
Does keeping a table title with the next paragraph make the column header repeat?
No. The title’s paragraph pagination setting and the table row’s repeating-header setting solve separate problems.

No universal rule is established here. Check the documentation for the specific layout engine generating the PDF.
