To join a Telegram channel, open it in Telegram and tap Join or Subscribe. Find a public channel by searching its username or opening a t.me/username link. A private channel requires an invitation link or an administrator adding you, and some links require approval before you can enter.
What a Telegram channel is
A channel is a broadcast feed: administrators publish posts, and subscribers primarily read them. Posts appear under the channel’s name rather than an individual administrator’s name. Telegram says channels can have unlimited subscribers and new subscribers can see available message history, though deleted or otherwise unavailable posts cannot be assumed to remain visible. A channel is not necessarily a place to chat. Reactions, comments through a linked discussion group, and direct messages to channel owners are optional features controlled by the channel’s setup.
What you need before joining
- You need a Telegram account to subscribe. Telegram accounts are tied to a mobile number; Telegram says landlines are not supported. You can use Telegram on a phone, tablet, desktop, or web client. See Telegram’s FAQ and its official site.
- You do not need to know the owner personally. Public channels can be found by username; private ones require an invitation or an administrator adding you.
- Joining does not ordinarily show your phone number to channel subscribers. Phone-number visibility depends on your Telegram privacy settings. A public username can make you discoverable in search without automatically revealing your number. Telegram explains username and number privacy here.
Join a public channel by searching Telegram
- Open Telegram and tap or click the Search field or magnifying-glass icon.
- Enter the channel’s exact username, with or without the
@symbol, or search its name. - Check the results and open the channel that matches. A username is more precise than a display name, which may be shared by unofficial or impersonating channels.
- Review the profile, description, and any official website or social account linked by the organization.
- Tap or click Join, Subscribe, or the equivalent control in your app’s language.
Public channels have usernames and can appear in Telegram search. Search can still return lookalikes, so do not rely on a familiar display name alone. Telegram’s channel FAQ describes public channels and search.

Join using a public link
- Tap or click the channel’s
t.me/usernamelink. - If prompted, choose Open in Telegram. If the app is not installed, use Telegram Web or install Telegram from its official site.
- Check the channel name and profile to make sure the link leads to the channel you intended.
- Select Join or Subscribe.
Telegram describes t.me/username links as links that open the relevant Telegram destination. Public channel content may also be viewable in a browser without an account, but viewing it is not the same as subscribing. See Telegram’s FAQ and channel tour.
Join a private channel
- Ask the channel owner or an administrator for an invitation link. Private channels normally do not appear in public search.
- Open the invitation link, often formatted as a private
t.me/+...ort.me/joinchat/...link. - Check the destination and choose Join if access is immediate.
- If Telegram offers Request to Join or similar wording, submit the request and wait for an administrator to approve it.
Private links can be revoked, expire, have a usage limit, or require approval. These controls are reflected in Telegram’s invite-link interface strings and Bot API documentation. A private channel requires an owner’s addition or an invite link, according to Telegram’s channel FAQ.
How to confirm you joined and manage the channel
After joining, the channel should appear in your chat list, and the initial join control should no longer be shown. Open it to read available posts and history. New posts may trigger notifications unless you mute them.
To mute or restore notifications, open the channel and look in its profile/header or overflow menu for the notification control. To leave, use the channel menu and choose the leave or unsubscribe option. Exact icons and labels vary across Android, iPhone and iPad, Desktop, Web, app language, and version.

Public channels and public groups can both be discoverable, but they serve different purposes. Check the destination before joining; a group invitation is not a channel invitation. Telegram’s FAQ and channel FAQ describe the distinction.

Check a channel before trusting it
A public listing or invitation link is not proof that a channel is legitimate. Before subscribing, compare its username and link with the organization’s official site, and look for signs of impersonation. Treat requests for Telegram login codes, passwords, banking details, or crypto wallet seed phrases as dangerous. Be cautious with urgent payment demands, malware links, and promises of unrealistic financial returns. Joining is a way to receive posts, not an endorsement of their accuracy.
For privacy, remember that a public username can make your account searchable and contactable. Phone-number visibility is governed separately by your settings; reactions, comments, profile details, and direct-message features may also affect what other people can see.
