The fastest way to connect Slack and WordPress is a Zapier workflow: install and activate Zapier for WordPress, connect both accounts, choose a WordPress event such as a new post or comment, and send the selected fields to a Slack channel. For custom payloads or developer-controlled events, use a webhook plugin such as RT Connect Webhooks. If you only need downtime or routine alerts, a focused notification plugin may be simpler than either approach.

Option 1: Connect WordPress and Slack with Zapier

Zapier is usually the lowest-effort choice when the required event and Slack action already exist. Its documented WordPress triggers include new posts, updated posts, comments, media, and users. Slack actions include sending channel messages and direct notifications. Zapier also documents reverse workflows that create WordPress posts from Slack messages.

Prerequisites

  • Install and activate the Zapier for WordPress plugin.
  • Use a launched WordPress site served over SSL. A site that is still in a private or unlaunched state cannot complete the normal connection flow.
  • On WordPress.com, plugin installation requires the Business plan or higher.
  • Connect an account with Editor or Administrator access, as recommended by Zapier for the WordPress connection.
  • Have permission to install apps or authorize integrations in the Slack workspace and target channel.

Send new posts, comments, or users to Slack

  1. Install and activate Zapier for WordPress from the WordPress dashboard.
  2. In Zapier, create a new Zap and select WordPress as the trigger app.
  3. Choose the event that matches your workflow, such as New Post, Updated Post, New Comment, or New User.
  4. Connect the WordPress site and complete the requested authentication and permission checks.
  5. Select Slack as the action app and choose Send Channel Message or another appropriate notification action.
  6. Map useful fields into the Slack message: post title, author, status, site URL, comment text, or user name. Keep the message concise enough for a channel to scan.
  7. Test with a non-critical post or comment. Confirm that the destination channel, links, formatting, and permissions are correct.
  8. Enable the Zap only after the test produces the expected message.

Create a WordPress post from a Slack message

A reverse workflow can turn a message in a designated Slack channel into a WordPress post. Use a dedicated channel and an explicit message format rather than allowing every conversation to publish automatically.

  1. Create a Zap with a Slack channel-message trigger.
  2. Restrict the trigger to the channel and, where available, the message pattern or authorized users you intend to use.
  3. Select WordPress’s Create Post action.
  4. Map the Slack message into the post title and content, and set the intended status.
  5. Start with Draft status so an editor can review formatting, links, media, taxonomy, and sensitive information.
  6. Test with a disposable message, inspect the resulting draft in WordPress, and add editorial safeguards before considering automatic publication.

Zapier limitations to account for

  • Zapier task limits and plan features affect how often workflows can run and should be checked against your current plan.
  • A successful connection does not grant editorial permission that the WordPress account does not already have.
  • External automation adds another service to monitor; use Zapier’s task history when a message does not arrive.

Option 2: Use webhooks, REST, or custom PHP

Choose a webhook-based design when you need to control the JSON payload, expose integration management through REST, retain delivery logs, or fire an event from custom PHP. RT Connect Webhooks is documented for Slack-compatible webhook or JSON connections and provides a REST namespace at /wp-json/rtcw/v1/.

Typical webhook setup

  1. Install and configure the webhook plugin on the WordPress site.
  2. Define the WordPress event that should produce a notification, such as publication, update, comment, or a custom application event.
  3. Specify the receiving webhook or automation endpoint and map the JSON fields you want to send.
  4. Use payload filtering to remove unnecessary content, personal data, or internal fields.
  5. Send a test event and inspect both the receiving service and the plugin’s delivery logs.
  6. Monitor failed deliveries and adjust the endpoint, authentication, or payload mapping as needed.

Custom PHP events and administration

RT Connect Webhooks documents an event-dispatched action and a manual PHP trigger, allowing custom code to send an event when a built-in WordPress hook is not enough. Its REST route can be used for integration management, subject to the authentication and permissions configured on the site.

Keep webhook URLs, signing secrets, and API tokens out of post content, theme templates, screenshots, and public repositories. If a secret is exposed, revoke or rotate it at the receiving service and update the WordPress configuration.

Option 3: Install a focused Slack notification plugin

A dedicated plugin can be preferable when the requirement is operational awareness rather than a multi-step content workflow.

WP Down Slack Alert

WP Down Slack Alert is aimed at notifying a selected Slack channel when a WordPress site goes down and when recovery information is available. Its setup documentation includes a Slack API-token configuration wizard. It is a recovery and availability alert, not a general-purpose post automation system.

Ping Me On Slack

Ping Me On Slack is designed to send WordPress notifications to Slack. The exact events, fields, compatibility, maintenance status, and configuration options should be confirmed on its current plugin listing before installation.

What to check before installing any alert plugin

  • The plugin’s tested WordPress and PHP compatibility.
  • Recent maintenance activity and support responses.
  • Required Slack scopes, tokens, or channel permissions.
  • Whether it sends the specific event you need and whether delivery attempts are logged.
  • How it handles duplicate alerts, failures, and credential changes.

How to design useful Slack notifications

Include enough context to act

A practical post notification normally includes the event type, title, author, status, timestamp, and a direct WordPress URL. A comment alert should include the commenter’s name, a short excerpt, moderation status, and a link to the moderation screen. Avoid sending the full content of private posts, drafts, or comments to broad channels.

Separate audiences and urgency

Use different channels for editorial activity, moderation, and infrastructure alerts. A publishing channel can receive routine post updates, while downtime notifications should reach the people responsible for site operations. This prevents important failures from being buried in routine activity.

Prevent loops and accidental publishing

If Slack messages create WordPress posts and WordPress posts are also sent back to Slack, define a marker or dedicated channel so one event cannot trigger an endless cycle. Keep Slack-to-WordPress actions in draft mode until the workflow has been proven with test messages.

Troubleshoot a failed integration

No WordPress events arrive in Zapier

  • Confirm the Zapier for WordPress plugin is active and the site is launched and using SSL.
  • Reconnect the WordPress account if credentials or permissions changed.
  • Check that the selected trigger matches the event: an update is not the same as a new post, and a comment may require moderation or approval before it qualifies.
  • Review Zapier task history for authentication, filtering, or rate-limit errors.

The Zap runs but Slack shows nothing

  • Verify the selected workspace and channel.
  • Confirm the Slack app or connection still has permission to post in that channel.
  • Check whether a filter or conditional step stopped the action.
  • Send a test message to a channel where you have confirmed posting permission.

Webhook deliveries fail

  • Inspect the plugin’s logs and the receiving endpoint’s response code.
  • Validate the JSON structure, content type, authentication header, and destination URL.
  • Check whether the endpoint blocks requests by IP, signature, or rate limit.
  • Rotate exposed secrets and update every dependent connection.

Slack-to-WordPress publishing is unsafe

Change the action to create drafts, restrict the trigger channel, limit authorized senders, and require editorial review. Do not allow an unrestricted public or general-purpose Slack channel to publish directly to a production site.

Which option should you choose?

  • Choose Zapier for the quickest standard workflow, such as notifying a channel about posts or comments, or creating reviewed drafts from Slack.
  • Choose webhooks or custom code when payload shape, REST control, PHP-triggered events, and detailed logs matter more than minimal setup.
  • Choose an alert plugin when you need a narrow operational notification, such as downtime or recovery, and do not need bidirectional content automation.
