To add image generation to a web app, have the browser send the user’s prompt to your server, then call OpenAI from the server with a secret API key. Use the Images API for a single generation or edit; use the Responses API when image creation is part of a conversation or a multi-step workflow. Build for slow responses, validate requests, review moderation signals before delivery, and decide deliberately what your application stores.
Choose the API that matches the interaction
For one prompt that produces one image—or one image-edit request—the Images API is the direct route. OpenAI’s image-generation guide says, “If you only need to generate or edit a single image from one prompt, the Image API is your best choice.” For a conversational experience in which users revise an image over multiple turns, choose the Responses API image-generation tool: it can work with image inputs in context.

Keep provider credentials on your server
Do not place a reusable OpenAI API key in frontend JavaScript, HTML, a mobile bundle, or any code delivered to users. Anyone who can inspect that code could extract the key and use it. Instead, let the browser call an authenticated route on your application server; the server validates the request and calls OpenAI with a key loaded from an environment variable or secret store.

- Browser: submit the prompt and any permitted settings to your own backend route.
- Application server: authenticate the user, validate inputs, enforce your application’s limits, and select the allowed operation.
- OpenAI: make the request using a server-held credential and the appropriate Images or Responses API flow.
- Application server: interpret the result and moderation information, then return the output or a safe status to the browser.
OpenAI’s JavaScript quickstart documents server-side SDK use with Node.js, Deno, or Bun and environment-based API-key configuration. The example below uses Node.js and the Images API for a single generation. Keep the model and options aligned with the current official image-generation guide rather than copying a model name from an old example.
Build a server-side generation route
Install and configure the SDK
Install the OpenAI JavaScript SDK in the server project and provide its credential through your deployment’s secret manager or a local environment variable. Do not expose that variable through frontend build-time configuration.

Example: Express route for a one-off image
This example accepts a JSON prompt, asks the Images API for an image, and returns a data URL. It deliberately omits framework-specific authentication and storage: add your own session checks, allowed settings, quotas, and persistence policy before deploying. Confirm the currently available image model and output options in OpenAI’s documentation.

If the feature is conversational, call the Responses API with the image-generation tool instead of trying to simulate a multi-turn conversation as unrelated one-off calls. The official guides describe the relevant request structures; keep the client response narrow and avoid returning internal diagnostics or credentials.
Validate prompts, uploads, and settings
OpenAI’s documentation does not prescribe universal application-side prompt lengths, upload limits, or per-user quotas. Choose values that fit your product, hosting limits, expected costs, and abuse risk, then enforce them on the server rather than trusting the browser.

- Require a non-empty prompt and reject input that exceeds your product’s documented limit.
- For edits, allow only supported file types and sizes, inspect the upload server-side, and reject malformed or unexpected content before making a provider request.
- Expose only settings your interface can explain and your server permits. Generation options include size, quality, format, and compression; the Responses tool also supports an action setting.
- Apply user or account rate limits and any product quota before calling the provider. This prevents a client from bypassing UI controls by sending direct requests to your route.
- Keep server request-body limits appropriate for image uploads; the small JSON limit in the example is for prompt-only requests, not image-edit uploads.
Design for latency and failures
OpenAI’s current image-generation guide says complex prompts can take up to two minutes. A browser spinner alone is not enough if your hosting platform imposes a shorter request timeout. Choose a synchronous request only when the end-to-end path can accommodate the wait; otherwise, use an application job or other asynchronous pattern that fits your stack. The exact queue, polling, or notification design is an application choice.

- Pending: show that generation is underway and disable or guard the submit action to reduce accidental duplicate requests.
- Success: show the output only after the moderation review and any product-specific checks are complete.
- Recoverable failure: explain when a user can retry and avoid silently submitting the same paid request again.
- Request identity: record provider request IDs where available so you can investigate failures without logging secrets or unnecessary prompt and image content.
Retry only failures that may recover
OpenAI distinguishes transient rate-limit and server failures from quota problems and user-correctable generation failures. Retry transient failures with backoff, using a bounded retry policy and clear user feedback. Do not automatically retry quota errors; resolve the account or billing issue first. For invalid, rejected, or otherwise user-correctable input, explain what needs to change rather than sending the same request again.
Triage common errors

Moderate before showing or using an image
Do not assume a generated result should immediately appear in a public feed or trigger another automated action. OpenAI documents standalone moderation and moderation scores returned alongside generation. Review the available signals against your application’s own content policy before display, publication, or downstream processing. Give users an understandable status if content is held or rejected; do not expose raw internal moderation details as a substitute for a product decision.

Moderation is a decision point in the delivery pipeline, not merely a logging feature. Keep it between the provider response and any user-visible or consequential action, and define what happens when review indicates that the output should not proceed.

Separate your own data-retention policy from OpenAI’s API-side data controls. If your app saves prompts, uploaded images, generated files, or conversation history, tell users where that data is kept, how long it remains, and how they can request deletion. Avoid logging full prompts or image contents unless there is a clear need and a suitable access and retention policy.
OpenAI’s data-controls documentation says retention depends on endpoint, model, and organization controls. It lists image models eligible for Zero Data Retention, and notes that image and file inputs are scanned for CSAM; potential matches may be retained for manual review even when specified retention controls are enabled. Therefore, do not describe a retention mode as meaning no processing or no exception handling. Check the current data controls documentation for the applicable endpoint, model, and organization.

Ship the feature with explicit boundaries
A dependable integration is more than a successful API call: the browser never holds the provider key, the server owns validation and request limits, the chosen API fits the interaction, and output reaches users only after the appropriate checks. Keep model and parameter choices tied to the current OpenAI documentation, then make latency, retries, moderation, and data storage visible parts of the product design rather than hidden implementation details.
