Use Zapier’s native Screenshot API app first. Build a Zap that receives a website URL, runs Take a Screenshot (or Scrolling Screenshot), then passes the returned file, URL, or other output to storage, email, a database, or an image-processing step. If the native action lacks a setting you need, call the provider through API by Zapier or Webhooks by Zapier after checking that provider’s current API contract.

What the integration does

A typical workflow has three parts:

  1. Trigger: an event supplies a target URL, such as a new form submission, database record, or CMS item.
  2. Capture: a screenshot service loads that URL and returns an image or related result.
  3. Destination: another Zap step stores, sends, labels, analyzes, or publishes the result.

The exact trigger and destination are independent of the screenshot app. Your first decision is whether Zapier’s native Screenshot API action already provides the capture mode and output you require.

Route 1: the native Screenshot API app

Add the trigger

  1. Open the Zap editor and create a Zap.
  2. Choose the event that contains the website URL.
  3. Test the trigger and confirm that the URL is present in the sample data. Normalize it to a complete https:// address if your source can provide partial URLs.

Add the screenshot action

  1. Add an action and search for Screenshot API.
  2. Select Take a Screenshot for a standard capture, or Scrolling Screenshot when the page must be captured while scrolling.
  3. Connect the provider account requested by the live editor.
  4. Map the incoming URL into the action’s URL field.
  5. Set the output format and any capture controls exposed by the current action. The directory listing establishes URL and output fields plus optional controls; labels and available fields can change, so use the editor’s current names rather than copying an old screenshot of the interface.
  6. Run the test. Record whether the result is a file, a URL, or another representation.

Send the result onward

Add the destination action only after inspecting the test output. A file can usually be uploaded or attached; a URL can be written to a record or passed to a notification. Do not hard-code a field name until the test confirms it, because the app-directory listing does not define a universal response schema.

When a direct API request is better

Use a direct request when the native action lacks a required option, the provider has no suitable Zapier app, or you need a provider-specific endpoint. Before configuring anything, verify the provider’s current documentation for its base URL, HTTP method, authentication placement, required and optional parameters, output format, synchronous or asynchronous behavior, response fields, errors, rate limits, and image-retention policy. “Screenshot API” is not a universal protocol.

Zapier route Best fit Important caveat
Native Screenshot API action The listed action and controls match your capture. Confirm the live editor’s output shape and provider account requirements.
API by Zapier An API-key or OAuth2 request when no suitable native action exists. Zapier’s help guidance positions it for these authentication methods; connections can be reused across workflows and teammates.
Webhooks by Zapier action A request using Basic Auth or no authentication, or a webhook-style payload. Credentials entered in step fields are visible to people who can access the Zap. Zapier documents a 5 MB maximum action payload and says rate limits apply.
Webhooks by Zapier trigger An external screenshot service must start the Zap. Catch Hook parses request data; Catch Raw Hook preserves raw data and headers and has a documented 2 MB maximum request.
GetScreenshot app An alternative app with website or element screenshot actions. Its directory listing includes plan qualifications; verify current availability and requirements.

Configure API by Zapier

  1. Add an action and choose API by Zapier.
  2. Select the request method and enter the provider URL from its official documentation.
  3. Create or select the required API-key or OAuth2 connection.
  4. Map the trigger’s URL into the documented request parameter and add output, viewport, full-page, or other provider-specific fields only when supported.
  5. Test with a real representative page, then map the response into the next action.

Zapier describes API Request actions for supported public apps as beta. API by Zapier is the documented choice for API-key and OAuth2 calls when an app integration is unavailable.

Configure Webhooks by Zapier

Outbound request

  1. Choose Webhooks by Zapier as an action.
  2. Select GET, POST, PUT, or Custom Request, matching the provider’s documentation.
  3. Enter the endpoint, authentication, headers, query parameters, and body format exactly as documented.
  4. Use Custom Request for PATCH or DELETE, nested JSON arrays, empty values, or highly customized headers.
  5. Validate JSON and keep the complete action payload under Zapier’s documented 5 MB maximum.
  6. Test, inspect the response, and map the confirmed output to your destination step.

Inbound callback

If the screenshot provider calls Zapier after an asynchronous job, add a Webhooks trigger. Choose Catch Hook when you want Zapier to parse fields. Choose Catch Raw Hook when you need the unmodified request and headers; its documented maximum is 2 MB. Give the provider the generated hook URL, send a test callback, and map the parsed or raw fields in later steps.

ScreenshotNeo: skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL in one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie and consent banners are accepted and 60-plus known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing result in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

For a Zap, use the provider URL in a Webhooks action or call it from your own intermediary. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for current parameters.

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, 12 device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, selector waits, delays, network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of 100 URLs per call, a usage API, an OpenAPI specification, and familiar parameter names for easier migration. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Testing and reliability checklist

  • Test a fast public page and a slow, script-heavy page.
  • Include a page that requires scrolling if you use a scrolling or full-page mode.
  • Check pages with cookie consent, authentication, redirects, and lazy-loaded images where relevant.
  • Inspect the actual output type before mapping it downstream.
  • Test timeout, failed-load, CAPTCHA, and oversized-payload behavior.
  • Watch provider and Zapier rate limits, retries, and task consumption.
  • Remove or protect credentials; do not place secrets in fields visible to unnecessary Zap users.

Troubleshooting

The URL field is empty

Retest the trigger and map the field containing the complete URL. If the source provides a record ID instead, add a lookup step before the screenshot action.

The native app lacks a needed option

Confirm the live action’s current fields. If the setting is provider-specific or absent, switch to API by Zapier or Webhooks and follow the provider’s documentation.

The request is rejected

Check method, endpoint version, authentication location, content type, required parameters, and URL encoding. Compare the Zap request with a known-good provider example.

The output cannot be stored

Inspect the test response. Map a returned file as a file, or download a returned URL before sending it to a destination that requires binary data.

The Zap exceeds a payload limit

Zapier documents 5 MB for a Webhooks action payload and 2 MB for Catch Raw Hook input. Reduce metadata, avoid embedding unnecessary data, or pass a URL instead of raw image bytes.

An asynchronous job never reaches the next step

Use the provider’s documented callback mechanism, configure Catch Hook or Catch Raw Hook as appropriate, and retain the job identifier so the callback can be matched to the originating record.

Choosing the right design

  • Choose the native action for the shortest setup and standard captures.
  • Choose API by Zapier for reusable API-key or OAuth2 connections.
  • Choose Webhooks for Basic Auth, unauthenticated requests, custom payloads, or inbound callbacks.
  • Choose ScreenshotNeo first when clean captures, transparent billing outcomes, broad capture controls, or MCP access matter; it also has the lowest paid plan listed here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one Zap capture several URLs?

Yes. Feed each URL through a loop or line-item workflow, subject to the screenshot provider’s and Zapier’s task and rate limits.

Should I use Catch Hook or Catch Raw Hook?

Use Catch Hook for parsed fields. Use Catch Raw Hook only when preserving the original request and headers is necessary.

Is a screenshot API’s 5 MB limit universal?

No. The 5 MB figure documented here is Zapier’s Webhooks action payload limit, not a universal image or provider limit.
