To install WordPress on Windows with WampServer, first get WAMP’s Apache, PHP and database services running, then put the WordPress files in WampServer’s web root, create a database in phpMyAdmin and open the local WordPress installer. This setup is for local development—not a secure way to publish a public website.
Check WordPress and WampServer requirements first
WampServer provides the local web-server environment; WordPress is installed separately as files connected to a database. For a new installation, WordPress currently recommends PHP 8.3 or later, MariaDB 10.11 or later or MySQL 8.0 or later, and HTTPS. Apache or Nginx is recommended, although WordPress says any server that supports PHP and MySQL can run it. These are the requirements listed on WordPress’s requirements page, checked September 30, 2026.
WordPress’s pre-install handbook lists older minimums—PHP 7.4+, MySQL 5.7+ or MariaDB 10.3+—and was last updated December 17, 2025. For a new WAMP setup, use the newer recommended requirements rather than aiming for that older baseline. Check the PHP and database versions bundled with the WampServer release you install.

Install WampServer and verify its services
- Download and install WampServer. Choose the installer that matches your Windows system architecture, run the setup wizard and launch WampServer. It bundles Apache, PHP and MySQL for Windows, as described in the Make WordPress Core local-server guide.
- Wait for the tray icon to turn green. Green indicates the services are running; orange indicates a service has an issue; red indicates Apache and MySQL are not running. Resolve any service problem before continuing.
- Check the local server. Open http://localhost/ and confirm the WampServer homepage appears. Then open http://localhost/phpmyadmin/ to check database administration. WampServer’s site and its installation guidance cover the local environment and common setup checks.
If localhost does not load, check that Windows maps localhost to 127.0.0.1 and that another program is not occupying port 80. Other local servers, WebDAV or Skype can cause port conflicts.

Put the WordPress files in WampServer’s web root
- Download WordPress from its official download page and unzip the package.
- Move the resulting WordPress folder into WampServer’s web root, commonly its
wwwdirectory. - Keep a simple folder name such as
wordpressor a project name. The folder name determines the local address: for example, a folder calledwordpressis reached athttp://localhost/wordpress/.
WordPress’s installation guide also begins by downloading and unzipping the package.
Create the site database in phpMyAdmin
- Open http://localhost/phpmyadmin/.
- Use phpMyAdmin’s database-creation option to create a new, separate database for this WordPress site.
- Note the exact database name. You will need it, along with the database username, password and host, during WordPress setup.
WordPress stores site data in MySQL or MariaDB; phpMyAdmin is a web-based tool for administering those databases. The WordPress troubleshooting documentation explains database-related installation issues.

Run the WordPress installer and connect the database
- Visit
http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php, replacingwordpresswith the folder name you chose. - Enter the database connection details when prompted. The database name must match the one you created in phpMyAdmin. Use the database username and password configured for your local WAMP database, and set the host to
localhostfor the usual local setup. - When the installer asks for site details, enter a site title, administrator username, strong password and email address, then submit the form.
The local WampServer tutorial’s example uses root as the database user and a blank password. Those are tutorial-specific local values, not safe credentials for a public site. The documented installer path is also shown in the WordPress testing guide.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEnable custom permalinks and adjust upload limits if needed
Enable Apache rewrite support
In WampServer’s Apache modules menu, enable rewrite_module. WordPress needs Apache rewrite support for custom permalink URLs; without it, pretty links may return 404 errors. Let WampServer reload Apache or restart it after changing the module. See the WampServer guidance for module controls.

Raise PHP upload limits for larger files
If a media or plugin upload exceeds the configured limit, adjust PHP’s post_max_size and upload_max_filesize together. The WampServer tutorial gives 50M as an example value, not a universal requirement. Reload or restart Apache after editing PHP settings.
Troubleshoot common WAMP installation problems
| Symptom | What to check |
|---|---|
| WampServer icon stays orange or red | Identify whether Apache or the database service failed; check for port conflicts and respond to any Windows firewall prompt. Green is the ready state. |
| WampServer homepage does not load | Check that localhost maps to 127.0.0.1 and that another application or local server is not using port 80. |
| phpMyAdmin cannot connect | Confirm the intended database service is running and that phpMyAdmin is using the correct local credentials. A no-password local account may require matching phpMyAdmin configuration. |
| Custom permalink URLs return 404 | Enable Apache’s rewrite_module and reload Apache. |
| Large uploads fail | Increase both post_max_size and upload_max_filesize, then reload Apache. |
| Installer reports “Missing MySQL extension” | Check that the active WAMP PHP build has the required MySQL/PDO extension enabled and that Apache is using that PHP build. WordPress documents this as a known installation issue in its installation documentation. |
Keep this installation local, or prepare a public site properly
A WAMP localhost installation is useful for development and testing, but the WampServer tutorial warns that this setup is not secure for exposing a blog to the public internet. Keep development local, use strong administrator credentials, and do not carry the tutorial’s blank-password database example into a public deployment. Before publishing, move the site to hosting that meets WordPress’s current PHP and database recommendations, supports HTTPS, and uses secured database credentials.
