You can install wkhtmltopdf on shared hosting only when your provider permits executable files and supplies a compatible Linux environment. Before downloading anything, confirm SSH or another shell, CPU architecture, executable permissions, the required runtime libraries and fonts, and the host’s policy on user-managed binaries. A file copied into your home directory is not automatically runnable.
The official project describes wkhtmltopdf as a headless HTML-to-PDF tool that does not require a display service. Its downloads page identifies 0.12.6 as the stable series, released June 11, 2020, with packages that vary by distribution and architecture. Use those facts to choose a package, then verify it with a controlled HTML file.
What must be true before installation
Shared hosting is not one standardized environment. Your account may be a restricted shell, a container, or a user account on a server managed entirely by the host. Installation is feasible only if all of the following are true:

- You have SSH or another approved shell and can execute programs from your account.
- The provider permits user-managed executables, or the administrator will install wkhtmltopdf for you.
- The package matches the server’s Linux distribution and CPU architecture.
- The server has the runtime libraries and font configuration required by the build.
- Your application is allowed to start a child process and write the output file where you need it.

- Is the server x86_64, arm64, or another architecture?
- Is SSH enabled, and may I run an executable stored in my home directory?
- Are user-installed binaries and child processes allowed by the plan?
- Can you provide or install the runtime libraries and fonts required by the matching wkhtmltopdf package?
- Will your support team install it system-wide if my account lacks the necessary privileges?
Do not infer a universal rule from one control panel. For example, cPanel’s documentation says root access is required to install cPanel & WHM; that is a specific server-administration requirement, not proof that every shared-hosting account forbids wkhtmltopdf. Ask about your actual account and provider.
Choose a package that matches the server
Use the official wkhtmltopdf downloads and FAQ page as the package index. Its table is distribution- and architecture-specific. The project says the current stable series is 0.12.6, released June 11, 2020; do not treat an old package for one target as a generic Linux build.

“Static” does not mean dependency-free. The project explains that only Qt is linked statically; other system packages and runtime font configuration still matter. If the downloads page does not list your exact target, ask the provider for a supported build rather than guessing.
Installation paths on shared hosting
Path 1: Ask the provider to install it
This is the most reliable route when you do not control system packages. Give support the exact distribution, release, architecture, and desired wkhtmltopdf series. Ask for the absolute executable path they approve, such as a system path or a provider-managed application path. Your application should then invoke that path directly rather than assuming wkhtmltopdf is on PATH.
Provider installation also addresses permissions and shared-library ownership. If support declines, request an approved alternative environment where you can manage system packages, or use a rendering service instead of attempting to bypass the account policy.

Path 2: Extract an approved build in your home directory
Some hosts allow a user-local executable. Download the package that matches the host’s distribution and architecture, upload it through the provider-approved method, and extract it beneath a directory such as $HOME/opt/wkhtmltopdf. Keep the executable and its bundled directories together, and set execute permission only when the host permits it:

Extraction does not solve missing system libraries or fonts. If the version command reports a loader or shared-library error, stop and ask the host to provide the dependency or install the program.
Path 3: When the account cannot run it
If SSH is unavailable, executable files are blocked, child processes are disabled, or the host will not provide compatible dependencies, there is no safe user-side installation trick. Do not upload random binaries, alter permissions repeatedly, or attempt to evade an execution policy. Use provider/admin help or move the rendering job to an environment where you control the operating-system packages.
Verify the binary with a controlled conversion
Run these checks after the provider confirms the path or after a user-local extraction. Replace the example path with the path you were given:

The command should return a version string instead of a loader, permission, or “not found” error. - Create a test page you control.

Download the PDF or open it through your application and confirm that text appears and the file is not zero bytes.
For a provider-installed binary, first locate the approved path supplied by support. If your shell policy allows it, command -v wkhtmltopdf can show a command on your PATH; otherwise use the absolute path.

Integrate it without creating a server-security problem
Never pass arbitrary HTML or JavaScript from users directly to wkhtmltopdf. The project’s downloads page gives this warning: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” The project status page repeats the security concern and discusses the aging Qt/WebKit foundation; see wkhtmltopdf project status.
- Render templates and assets from a controlled allowlist.
- Sanitize user fields before they become markup, URLs, CSS, or scripts.
- Run the process under the least-privileged account available.
- Write PDFs to a directory that is not executable and is not directly exposed unless intended.
- Apply a timeout and output-size limit in the calling application.
- Do not place secrets in HTML, cookies, environment variables exposed to page content, or command-line arguments.
wkhtmltopdf is headless, as the project overview explains at wkhtmltopdf.org, but headless operation does not make untrusted content safe.
Troubleshoot in the order failures usually occur
“Exec format error” or an immediate crash
The package probably targets a different CPU architecture or operating-system family. Reconfirm the architecture and distribution with the host, then select the corresponding entry in the official package table. Do not assume an x86_64 package will run on arm64.
“No such file or directory” for an existing file
On Linux this can indicate a missing dynamic loader or runtime library, not only a mistyped path. Ask the provider to inspect the package’s dependencies and install the compatible libraries. A user-local extraction cannot replace those system components.
Font warnings, blank text, or incorrect glyphs
The server may lack the fonts or font configuration expected by the document. Ask which fonts are available and whether the host permits the required configuration. Test with a simple document containing ordinary text before troubleshooting CSS or application code.

Check that the file has execute permission and that the hosting policy permits execution from your directory. If the filesystem is mounted with execution disabled or the provider blocks child processes, only the host can change that boundary.
“Command not found”
The binary may be outside PATH. Use the absolute path supplied by support or the path under your home directory. If no approved path exists, request installation rather than copying another build.
The process times out or the output is empty
First convert the local test file. If that works, inspect the application’s URL, permissions, network access, and timeout handling. If the local test also fails, return to package compatibility, libraries, fonts, and execution policy. Keep logs of the exact command, exit status, and provider response.

There is no single shared-hosting performance or compatibility guarantee for wkhtmltopdf. Rendering time depends on the page, assets, fonts, server limits, and provider throttling. Keep conversions bounded, avoid rendering unneeded external resources, and queue work if the host limits concurrent processes. Re-test after a server OS migration because a previously working user-local binary can lose library compatibility.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install wkhtmltopdf without SSH?
Usually not as a self-managed installation. Ask the provider whether it offers an approved control-panel installer or can place a compatible binary at a documented path; otherwise use an environment with shell and package control.
Does a successful --version check prove production pages will work?
No. It proves that the executable starts. Production pages can still expose missing fonts, blocked network access, permission limits, untrusted-input risks, or timeouts, so test a representative controlled document and keep the failure path logged.

Should I use a package copied from another server?
Only if the provider confirms that its distribution, release, architecture, libraries, and fonts match. The official package table is target-specific, and a copied binary is not a dependency or policy workaround.
