Install wkhtmltopdf from the package listed for your exact Linux distribution release and CPU architecture on the official downloads page. There is no reliable, universal Linux binary: the right package depends on the server’s OS, architecture, runtime libraries, fonts, and whether your application needs features from wkhtmltopdf’s patched Qt build. After installation, check wkhtmltopdf --version and test the rendering behavior your application actually uses.
Before installing: identify the server and required features
Do not choose a package just because its filename contains “Linux” or the version you want. First identify the distribution and release, CPU architecture, package format, and rendering features your application depends on. A package for Ubuntu 22.04 is not automatically the right choice for Debian 11, and an x86_64 package is not an arm64 package.
Record the distribution release and architecture
On the server, inspect the OS release information and architecture using the tools available in that environment. For example, cat /etc/os-release commonly reports the distribution and release, while uname -m reports the machine architecture. Treat these as identification aids, not as a package-selection command: compare their results with the official package listing, including the naming used for the package’s architecture.
Also confirm whether the server uses glibc or musl and what runtime libraries and fonts are installed. This matters in particular for minimal containers and Alpine Linux. The project says its generic Linux binaries have not worked reliably on Alpine, which uses musl.

Check the features your application needs
Some wkhtmltopdf behavior depends on the project’s patched Qt. Builds compiled without those patches may not behave identically. If the application relies on a feature such as headers or footers, confirm that the exact package you plan to install includes the needed behavior; do not infer feature parity from the executable name alone.
Choose a package from the official matrix
The project’s downloads page lists distribution-specific Linux packages for the releases and architectures shown below. This is the project’s published package list, not a guarantee of support for every newer release, derivative, or server configuration. Check the live listing before installing because package availability and filenames can change.

If the exact distribution release or architecture is absent, do not assume a nearby package is compatible. Investigate compatibility in a disposable environment or choose another approach rather than putting an unverified binary into production.
Install the matching package
Download the package selected for the exact server release and architecture from the official downloads page, then use the distribution’s native package workflow and package manager. The project does not provide one command sequence that applies across Linux distributions, so the package format determines the install command.

Debian or Ubuntu package workflow
If the official listing provides a Debian package for your exact release and architecture, install that downloaded package using the system’s package manager. On a compatible Debian-family system, a local package can commonly be passed to apt by its path, for example:
sudo apt install ./wkhtmltox_PACKAGE_VERSION.debReplace the filename with the actual downloaded package filename. This is an example of the local .deb workflow, not a claim that a particular package exists for every Debian or Ubuntu release. Review the package manager’s proposed dependency changes before confirming. If dependencies are unavailable or the package targets another release, stop and recheck the selection rather than forcing installation.
Other package formats
For RPM-based distributions, openSUSE, or Arch, follow the package format and native package-management instructions appropriate to the selected download. The exact filenames and commands depend on the current official package and operating system; the project page should guide that choice. Avoid converting a package to another format or using a package from a different distribution release as a shortcut unless you have independently established compatibility.
If direct package installation is not possible
The project notes that a package may sometimes be extracted instead of installed. Extraction does not make the program self-contained: required system dependencies still need to be installed, and library compatibility still applies. Use this route only when you understand how the extracted executable will find its libraries and fonts, and test it under the same runtime environment as the production service.

Install dependencies and fonts
“Static” does not mean “runs without system dependencies.” The project’s explanation says its static builds link Qt in a particular way, while other system packages may still be required. Runtime compatibility can depend on system libraries, glibc versus musl, fontconfig, and freetype2. Install dependencies through the target distribution’s package manager based on the selected package’s requirements; do not assume another distribution’s dependency list is interchangeable.
Fonts matter as well as shared libraries. A command can run successfully while the resulting PDF uses fallback fonts, changes line wrapping, or omits glyphs. Make sure the fonts needed by the application are installed in the environment where wkhtmltopdf runs, and test representative text including non-Latin characters if relevant.
An April 2021 report concerning Amazon Linux 2 mentions fontconfig, freetype, X11 libraries, and fonts for that historical environment. It is an environment-specific report, not a current supported installation recipe. Use the target package’s current requirements and validate them on the actual server instead of copying old commands from the issue report.
Verify the executable and the actual output
Check that the binary is callable
After installation, run:
wkhtmltopdf --versionThe documented -V or --version option prints version information. A successful result confirms that the shell can invoke the executable; it does not prove that fonts, patched-Qt features, remote resources, or your production rendering case work correctly. The command-line usage documentation is available in the project’s usage reference.
Run a representative conversion
Test with a representative HTML document and the same execution account and environment your service will use. Verify page size, page breaks, headers or footers if required, expected fonts, images, and any CSS or JavaScript behavior the application depends on. Compare the resulting PDF with the intended output rather than treating process exit status as proof of visual correctness.
Security: do not process untrusted HTML casually
The project warns: “Do not use wkhtmltopdf with any untrusted HTML – be sure to sanitize any user-supplied HTML/JS, otherwise it can lead to complete takeover of the server it is running on!” This is a serious server-security warning, not merely a concern about malformed PDFs.
If users can submit HTML or JavaScript, sanitize and constrain that input before conversion. Consider the converter’s execution context, filesystem access, network access, and the privileges of the account running it. Do not run arbitrary submitted content as a privileged service, and do not assume that a successful installation makes untrusted rendering safe.

The downloads page identifies 0.12.6 as the stable series and gives its release date as June 11, 2020; it describes older archive versions as obsolete and recommends the latest stable release. The main GitHub repository is archived and read-only. These are published project facts, not an assurance of ongoing maintenance, security updates, or compatibility with later Linux releases. If your deployment depends on wkhtmltopdf, account for that status in your security and upgrade planning.

For a broad installation background, there is no evidence-based basis to call every 0.12.x package interchangeable. Select the build for the system and behavior you require, then validate it. Installing “0.12.0 or later” does not itself establish that an older archived build is suitable for a new production server.
Troubleshoot common installation and rendering failures
