Windows 11 24H2 can still be installed on some unsupported PCs, but the workaround does not make the hardware officially compatible. For an in-place upgrade that preserves applications and files, use Microsoft’s official ISO, add the MoSetup registry value, and run setup.exe from inside Windows. For a clean installation, create USB media with the official ISO and Rufus.
Important: As of August 18, 2026, Windows 11 25H2 is Microsoft’s current release. Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro are scheduled to stop receiving updates on October 13, 2026. Install 24H2 only if you specifically need that release; otherwise, prefer 25H2.
Before you begin: unsupported means unsupported
Microsoft does not support Windows 11 installations on devices that fail its hardware requirements. Such PCs may experience compatibility problems, may not receive updates, may show a “system requirements not met” watermark, and are not entitled to Microsoft support. Microsoft also says damage caused by incompatibility is not covered by the manufacturer warranty. See Microsoft’s unsupported-device guidance.

Microsoft’s published minimum requirements include:
- A compatible 64-bit processor running at 1 GHz or faster with at least two cores
- At least 4 GB of RAM
- At least 64 GB of storage
- UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability
- TPM 2.0
- DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver
- A display larger than 9 inches with at least 720p resolution
- An internet connection; Windows 11 Home and personal-use Pro require a Microsoft account during initial setup

Which installation method should you use?

If the computer only fails because of an unsupported CPU or TPM check, try the in-place method first. If TPM, Secure Boot, or UEFI is merely disabled, enabling it in firmware is safer than bypassing it.

Readers searching for “24H2 RTM” may mean the original 24H2 release media or simply the 24H2 feature update. It is not Microsoft’s newest Windows 11 version: Microsoft identifies 25H2 as current.
For lifecycle planning, Microsoft lists these dates:
- Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro: updates end October 13, 2026.
- Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise and Education: support remains until October 12, 2027.
These dates come from Microsoft’s 24H2 release-health information and its July 2026 servicing notice. For a normal new installation, use the latest official ISO instead of deliberately choosing 24H2 unless a compatibility or testing requirement makes 24H2 necessary.

Check whether the PC is actually missing a requirement
“Unsupported” can describe several different problems:
- An unsupported processor generation or model
- TPM missing, disabled, or below version 2.0
- Secure Boot disabled or unavailable
- Legacy BIOS or CSM boot mode instead of UEFI
- Less than 4 GB of RAM
- Less than 64 GB of storage
- Incompatible graphics hardware or missing drivers
- A mismatch between the Windows edition, architecture, language, or installation media
Enter firmware setup and look for Intel PTT, AMD fTPM, TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, UEFI Boot, and CSM/Legacy Boot. A disabled TPM or Secure Boot feature is preferable to bypassing a missing one.
Do not blindly switch Legacy/CSM to UEFI. Windows installed on an MBR disk may stop booting when firmware is changed to UEFI. In Windows, open System Information and check BIOS Mode, or inspect the disk in Disk Management. An experienced user may validate a conversion with:
mbr2gpt /validate /allowFullOS
mbr2gpt /convert /allowFullOSBack up first, confirm the correct disk, check OEM recovery partitions, suspend BitLocker, and verify that the motherboard supports UEFI. This is not a casual one-click fix.
Back up and prepare recovery media
- Back up documents, browser profiles, password databases, activation information, and recovery keys.
- Create a full disk image if possible. A disk image is more useful than relying only on Windows’ rollback option.
- Open Settings > System > About or run
winverto record the current edition, version, and architecture. - Make sure the edition and language of the ISO match the current installation for an in-place upgrade.
- Keep at least 20–30 GB of free space for a practical feature upgrade, despite the formal 64 GB storage requirement.
- Disconnect unnecessary external devices and connect a laptop to AC power.
- Keep a second PC available to recreate installation media if necessary.
Microsoft recommends backing up before installing or reinstalling Windows. Its media-creation process requires a blank USB drive of at least 8 GB and erases the USB’s contents. See Microsoft’s installation-media instructions.
Download official Windows media
Download the ISO or Media Creation Tool only from Microsoft’s Windows 11 download page. Do not use modified ISOs, unofficial mirrors, “pre-bypassed” images, cracked activators, or UUP packages from unknown sources.

- Media Creation Tool: Creates standard bootable USB media.
- Rufus: Writes the official ISO to USB and offers selected Setup bypasses for a clean installation.
Method 1: Perform an in-place upgrade with the official ISO
Use this method when the current Windows installation boots normally and you want to retain applications, personal files, and settings. It is principally useful when the failure involves an unsupported CPU or TPM configuration.
1. Add the MoSetup registry value
Open Windows Terminal, Command Prompt, or PowerShell as administrator and run:
reg.exe add "HKLMSYSTEMSetupMoSetup" /v AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /fThis creates or changes AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU to 1. Microsoft Community guidance documents this workaround, but it is not an official Microsoft-supported bypass. It principally applies to an in-place upgrade and does not necessarily bypass every check in every installation path.
2. Run Setup from inside Windows
- Download the official Windows 11 ISO.
- Right-click the ISO and select Mount.
- Open the mounted drive in File Explorer.
- Run
setup.exe. - Accept the license terms.
- At the retention screen, select Keep personal files and apps.
- Continue through Setup and allow the PC to restart several times.
At the “Ready to install” screen, verify the retention choice before proceeding. Do not boot from the USB when your goal is to preserve programs and files; booting installation media starts the clean-install path.
After signing in, open Settings > Windows Update, check for updates, and confirm the result with:

Method 2: Create a clean-install USB with Rufus
Use Rufus when the existing Windows installation is corrupted, Setup refuses the in-place route, or you want a fresh system. A clean installation removes installed applications and can erase personal data, so verify the backup before selecting partitions.

Rufus is a free, open-source USB-writing utility. Its official FAQ documents bypasses for TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot by adding BypassTPMCheck and BypassSecureBootCheck to the boot image. Rufus does not make RAM and storage bypasses easy because those limitations can cause poor performance, crashes, and update problems. Its documentation also says there is no concrete evidence that a supposed BypassCPUCheck key works reliably.
Rufus procedure
- Download the official Windows 11 ISO from Microsoft.
- Download Rufus from rufus.ie.
- Insert a blank USB drive. A 16 GB or larger drive is a practical choice; Microsoft’s minimum is 8 GB.
- Open Rufus and select the USB drive and ISO.
- Choose GPT for a modern UEFI system.
- Choose MBR with BIOS or UEFI-CSM only when the machine genuinely requires legacy booting.
- Start writing the image. The USB’s contents will be erased.
- When Rufus displays Windows User Experience options, select only the bypasses actually needed.
- Boot the target PC from the USB.
- Select the correct edition and installation target.
- For a clean install, delete or format only the intended Windows partitions after checking the backup and disk identity.
- Complete Windows Setup, then install manufacturer chipset, storage, network, and graphics drivers.
Rufus-created media is most appropriate for a clean installation. It does not guarantee that an in-place upgrade will work.

If booted Windows Setup still blocks a clean installation, a commonly documented workaround is to add TPM and Secure Boot values from Setup.
- Boot from Windows installation media.
- At Windows Setup, press
Shift + F10. - Type
regeditand press Enter. - Go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMSetup. - Create a key named
LabConfig. - Inside it, create DWORD values named
BypassTPMCheckandBypassSecureBootCheck. - Set each value to
1. - Close Registry Editor and continue Setup.
Microsoft Community answers have also mentioned BypassRAMCheck and BypassCPUCheck, but they should not be treated as reliable or officially supported. Rufus specifically says it has no concrete evidence that BypassCPUCheck works and avoids automatically bypassing RAM and storage requirements. Procedure and behavior can vary between Windows builds.
Troubleshooting
Setup still says the PC is unsupported
- Confirm the registry path is
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMSetupMoSetup. - Confirm the value is exactly
AllowUpgradesWithUnsupportedTPMOrCPU. - Confirm its data is
1. - Restart Windows.
- Mount the ISO and run
setup.exefrom inside Windows. - Do not expect the MoSetup value to bypass RAM, storage, graphics, firmware-mode, or architecture failures.
The upgrade fails or rolls back
- Disconnect unnecessary peripherals.
- Update storage, chipset, and graphics drivers from the computer manufacturer.
- Temporarily remove third-party antivirus and system-tuning utilities.
- Free additional disk space.
- Review Setup logs in
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanther. - Restore the disk image if Windows becomes unstable.
The PC will not boot after firmware changes
Restore the previous UEFI/Legacy setting, verify that the correct Windows Boot Manager is selected, and avoid switching between MBR/Legacy and GPT/UEFI without preparation. Keep the installation USB available and use Windows Recovery Environment or Startup Repair only after securing important data.

Updates stop working
Microsoft does not guarantee updates on unsupported devices. An installation may complete successfully while later security updates, drivers, or feature updates fail. A watermark or Settings warning is also expected behavior on an unsupported installation, not necessarily an installation error.
How to return to Windows 10
After an upgrade, check Settings > System > Recovery > Go back. Microsoft normally makes this option available for 10 days. If it has disappeared, returning requires a disk image or a fresh Windows installation. This is why a full backup should be created before starting rather than treating rollback as the only recovery plan.
When you should not bypass the requirements
Do not proceed casually if the PC has less than 4 GB of non-upgradable RAM, less than 64 GB of storage, extremely old processor or graphics hardware, unavailable drivers, unsupported proprietary security software, or a role in critical work without a tested recovery image. In those cases, upgrade the RAM or SSD if practical, keep the existing supported system temporarily, install a supported Linux distribution, or move sensitive work to a supported Windows 11 PC.

Final recommendation
For a PC that boots reliably and mainly fails on CPU or TPM eligibility, the least destructive route is the official ISO, the documented MoSetup registry value, and setup.exe run inside Windows. For a rebuild, use Rufus with Microsoft’s ISO and treat partition selection as destructive. Before bypassing anything, check whether Intel PTT, AMD fTPM, Secure Boot, or UEFI can simply be enabled.
Choose 25H2 for general use unless you have a specific reason to install 24H2. Whichever version you choose, an unsupported installation remains unsupported and may lose update or driver compatibility later.
