You can install P3X OneNote on Ubuntu 18.04 or 16.04 with Snap: sudo snap install p3x-onenote. It is an unofficial Electron desktop wrapper for Microsoft’s online OneNote, not a native Microsoft Linux application.
Important: Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04 are obsolete releases in 2026. Treat these steps as a legacy-system workaround, not a reason to keep an internet-connected computer on an unsupported Ubuntu release. Upgrade to a currently supported Ubuntu version when possible.
What you are installing
Microsoft does not provide a native Linux desktop version equivalent to OneNote for Windows. P3X OneNote is an independent, open-source Electron application that displays OneNote online in a separate desktop window. The project says it supports personal and corporate Microsoft accounts and can cache data, but it is not a complete local implementation of the Windows application. See the P3X OneNote project and its Snap Store listing, which identifies the package as MIT-licensed.

What you need before installing
- An Ubuntu desktop session and a working internet connection. This is a graphical application, not a terminal-only tool.
- A Microsoft personal, work, or school account that can access the notebooks you need.
- An account with
sudoprivileges and enough disk space for Snap and application data. - A compatible processor architecture. Check it with
uname -m; do not assume a current package supports 32-bit Ubuntu.
Snapcraft lists Ubuntu 16.04 and later as releases where Snap support is normally ready to use, but that does not guarantee that a current P3X build will run on every old system. Outdated libraries, graphics drivers, certificate stores, or repositories can prevent installation, launch, or sign-in. See the Snapcraft Ubuntu installation instructions.
Install P3X OneNote with Snap
Check for Snap
Open Terminal and run:
snap versionA working installation prints version information for Snap and snapd. If the command is unavailable, install Snap support:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install snapdIf you have just installed snapd, log out and back in or restart Ubuntu before continuing. On an unmodified Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04 desktop, this step is usually unnecessary.

Install the application
Run the canonical Snap installation command:
sudo snap install p3x-onenoteAfter installation, launch P3X OneNote from the Ubuntu application menu by searching for P3X OneNote, or run:
p3x-onenoteSign in and check that it works
- Open P3X OneNote from the application menu or terminal.
- Wait for the OneNote sign-in page or embedded web interface to load.
- Sign in using the Microsoft account associated with your notebooks. Complete any multifactor authentication or organization-specific security checks.
- Choose a notebook and confirm that its content loads. Microsoft may change the labels and layout of its sign-in screens.
To verify that Snap installed the package, run:
snap list p3x-onenoteThe package should appear in the output. If needed, check whether its launcher is available with which p3x-onenote. A listed package confirms installation, but a working graphical window and accessible notebook are the practical checks for launch and sign-in.
Update or remove P3X OneNote
Update
Snaps normally update automatically. To request an update for this application manually, run:

sudo snap refresh p3x-onenoteTo inspect installed revisions, use snap list --all p3x-onenote. An update does not guarantee that a newer build remains compatible with Ubuntu 16.04 or 18.04.
Remove
Remove the application with:
sudo snap remove p3x-onenoteRemoving the package and deleting all associated user data are not necessarily the same operation. Before using any separate data-cleanup command, check what Snap data you want to keep; do not delete hidden directories blindly.
Troubleshoot common problems
Terminal says “snap: command not found”
Install snapd with sudo apt update followed by sudo apt install snapd, then log out and back in or restart. If the command is still unavailable, try enabling the socket:

sudo systemctl enable --now snapd.socketSnap cannot communicate with the server
Check the daemon and restart it if necessary:
systemctl status snapd
sudo systemctl restart snapd
sudo snap install p3x-onenoteA stopped or incomplete snapd installation, network or DNS trouble, proxy or certificate issues, or stale system state can cause this error. A historical Snapcraft support discussion documents this type of failure; it is a troubleshooting example, not a guarantee of compatibility.
Installation fails on an old Ubuntu system
Collect basic system details and retry after checking the system’s package and Snap state:

snap version
sudo snap refresh
sudo snap install p3x-onenoteCheck whether the computer is 64-bit, whether Ubuntu is fully updated, and whether other Snap packages install. That helps distinguish a P3X-specific problem from a broken Snap service or legacy system issue. Do not bypass package-signing checks or fetch repackaged installers from unknown download sites.

The application installs but will not open
Launch it from a terminal so any error is visible:
p3x-onenoteSave the error output, then try sudo snap refresh p3x-onenote. A graphics-driver or compositor problem, desktop-environment incompatibility, corrupted application data, unsupported architecture, or obsolete system library may be involved. A successful install alone does not establish that the graphical application can run on a particular old machine.
OneNote shows a blank window or repeats sign-in
- Confirm that internet access works in a normal browser and check that Ubuntu’s date and time are correct.
- Try signing in to OneNote online in a browser. If that also fails, the issue may be the account, network, or Microsoft sign-in flow rather than P3X.
- Work or school accounts may require security challenges, redirects, or multifactor authentication that do not complete properly in an embedded window.
- If the browser works but P3X does not, update the application and try again.
Alternatives if Snap or P3X does not suit you
Use OneNote in a browser
OneNote online avoids installing a third-party client and is a useful control test when troubleshooting. The trade-off is that you use a browser tab and its profiles and cookies rather than a dedicated application window.
Choose another P3X package format
The project also lists Flatpak, AppImage, .deb, and .rpm distributions, in addition to Snap. Check the project’s official releases for current options rather than relying on third-party download portals. AppImage requires managing executable permissions and updates; Flatpak requires its tooling and a compatible runtime; a .deb may require more manual update management than Snap.
Upgrade Ubuntu or choose a different notes app
For long-term use of online accounts, plan an upgrade or a clean installation of a currently supported Ubuntu release. If you are considering a Linux-native notes app such as Joplin, Obsidian, Standard Notes, Xournal++, or a Markdown-based tool, compare notebook import/export, syncing, collaboration, encryption, handwriting, and file-format support first. These products are not interchangeable with OneNote, and migration may involve compatibility trade-offs.
Security and support expectations
P3X OneNote is maintained independently of Microsoft. Obtain it through Snapcraft or the project’s official GitHub repository, and do not treat the Microsoft sign-in inside the app as Microsoft endorsement or support for the client.
