The simplest way to install Google Gemini on Windows 11 is to add gemini.google.com as a Progressive Web App (PWA) through Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome. This gives you a resizable Gemini window, a Start-menu entry and Taskbar support without repeatedly opening a browser tab.
It is not a conventional native Windows program or downloadable .exe. The app-like window is powered by the browser and still requires an internet connection, Google’s online service and any account or regional eligibility that applies to Gemini.
What you need before installing Gemini
- Windows 11.
- An up-to-date Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome installation.
- An internet connection.
- A Google Account if you want saved Gemini activity and additional account-specific features.
Google supports Gemini’s web app in browsers including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Opera and Edgium. Availability can vary by country, language, age, account type and product rollout. Personal access generally requires you to be at least 13, or the applicable age in your country. Family Link-managed accounts may be restricted, while work and school accounts can require administrator approval. Google says work-account access requires users to be 18 or older. Install Gemini as a PWA with Microsoft Edge
Edge is the clearest choice if you want Microsoft-documented Start-menu, Taskbar and app-management controls.

- Open Microsoft Edge in a normal browsing window.
- Visit
https://gemini.google.com/. - Sign in if you want to use your Google Account.
- Look for an App available message or install icon in the address bar.
- Select the icon, then choose Install.
- When Edge offers shortcuts, select the options you want, such as Start, Taskbar or Desktop.
Microsoft documents the same installation flow in its Edge PWA documentation. If the address-bar icon is missing, use the menu fallback: Settings and more (…) → More tools → Apps → Install this site as an app. Labels can vary slightly by Edge version and Windows language.
After installation, open Start and search for Gemini. Launch it from there, or use the Taskbar shortcut if you created one.
Install Gemini as a PWA with Google Chrome
- Open Google Chrome.
- Go to
https://gemini.google.com/. - Sign in if desired.
- Open Chrome’s three-dot Customize and control Google Chrome menu.
- Choose Cast, save, and share, then select Install page as app or the equivalent install command.
- Confirm the app name and select Install.
Chrome’s wording and menu location can change. Look for Install page as app, Install Gemini or an install icon in the address bar. A browser bookmark or ordinary desktop shortcut is not necessarily a PWA; use the explicit install command if you want a separate app-style window.

Pin Gemini to Start or the Taskbar
- Open Start and search for Gemini.
- Right-click the result.
- Choose Pin to Start or Pin to taskbar, if available.
You can also open the installed Gemini app, right-click its Taskbar icon and select Pin to taskbar. Edge PWAs can appear in the Start menu, Taskbar and Alt+Tab switcher. The installed app is associated with the browser profile used during installation, not with a separate Google identity.

What a Gemini PWA does—and does not do
A PWA packages a website in an app-style window. It can feel like a normal Windows application, but Gemini remains the web experience running through Edge or Chrome.
- It requires an internet connection to use Gemini’s cloud service.
- It does not turn Gemini into an offline Windows AI model.
- Features can vary by browser, account, region, language and rollout.
- Browser cookies, permissions, extensions and profile settings still apply.
- Clearing browser data can sign you out or reset the app.
Installing the PWA also does not make Gemini more private than using a browser tab. Review Gemini activity and your Google Account privacy settings separately from Windows app settings.
Gemini PWA versus a browser tab versus Gemini in Chrome

Gemini in Chrome is not the same as installing the Gemini website as a PWA. You can use one without installing the other.

How to uninstall the Gemini PWA
Remove it from Edge
Use any of these routes:
- Open the Gemini app, select its three-dot menu, choose App settings and select Uninstall. If Edge offers to clear associated data, choose the option you prefer.
- In Edge, enter
edge://apps, find Gemini, select Details and choose the uninstall command. - Open Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps, search for Gemini, select its three-dot menu and choose Uninstall.
Remove it from Chrome
Open the installed Gemini app and use its app menu to choose Uninstall or Remove from Chrome. Depending on the Chrome version, installed apps may also appear at chrome://apps. Confirm whether you want to delete associated browsing data. Chrome’s app-management labels and locations can change between releases.

Fix common Gemini PWA problems
The install icon is missing
- Reload Gemini after the page finishes loading.
- Update Edge or Chrome, then restart the browser.
- Use a normal window rather than Incognito or another private mode.
- Try the browser’s menu fallback instead of the address-bar icon.
- Check that you are installing from the intended browser profile.
The site may not currently be detected as installable, or an organization policy may block app installation. A VPN, region, language or account-eligibility issue can affect Gemini access even when the browser itself works. Google’s availability and account guidance explains additional restrictions.
Gemini opens in a normal browser tab
You probably created a bookmark or shortcut rather than installing the site as a PWA. Reopen Gemini in Edge or Chrome and use Install this site as an app, Install page as app or the address-bar install icon. A shortcut alone is not equivalent to a PWA.
The app is missing from Start
Search Start for Gemini, check Settings → Apps → Installed apps, or—in Edge—open edge://apps. If it is not listed, reinstall it from the browser profile that should own the Gemini session.

A work or school account cannot access Gemini
Your organization may not have enabled Gemini, or its Google Workspace edition may not qualify. Contact the administrator. You can try a personal Google Account only when doing so complies with your organization’s policies; installing the PWA does not bypass administrator controls.

Family Link or age restrictions block access
The PWA may install successfully but still refuse sign-in or limit features. Installing a website cannot bypass Google’s age, Family Link or regional requirements.
The app disappears after logging out of a virtual desktop
Microsoft documents that PWAs installed in FSLogix environments can disappear after logoff and logon. On a managed virtual desktop, a centrally managed web shortcut or ordinary browser bookmark may be more reliable than a locally installed PWA. See Microsoft’s PWA documentation.
Do you need a Google AI subscription?
No. Installing the Gemini PWA does not require a paid Google AI plan. Google lists a free Gemini option, although usage limits and features vary by account, region and current product policy. Paid plans can add higher limits, advanced features or Google One benefits, but they are not required simply to create the Windows app-like shortcut. Check Google’s current Google AI plans page for local pricing and benefits before subscribing.

Usually not. Edge and Chrome can create an official browser-managed Gemini PWA without a third-party wrapper, registry tweak or unknown download. Unofficial desktop wrappers add another vendor, permissions and update mechanism to evaluate and can lag behind Gemini’s web interface.
