Installing Falcon is a tenant-specific security deployment, not a generic antivirus download. You need an authorized CrowdStrike Falcon tenant or trial, a supported Windows release, administrator rights, the correct sensor package, and the CID or installation/provisioning token required by that tenant. After setup, verify registration in Falcon host management; a completed installer window alone does not prove that the device enrolled.
Choose the right installation method

Check prerequisites before downloading
Falcon access and credentials
- An active Falcon subscription, trial, or customer tenant.
- A console account allowed to download sensors and manage hosts.
- The correct customer ID (CID), when the tenant uses CID enrollment.
- An installation or provisioning token when the tenant requires one. Current console instructions override older CID-only instructions.
- The tenant’s Falcon cloud region and, for API deployment, a sensor-update policy and appropriately scoped API credentials.
- A maintenance token later if uninstall protection is enabled.
Windows and network requirements
- Local administrator or equivalent elevation.
- A supported Windows edition and architecture. CrowdStrike’s live compatibility list includes Windows 11 25H2, 24H2, 23H2, 22H2 and 21H2; Windows 10 22H2, 21H2, 1809, 1607 and 1507; Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 7 Embedded POSReady; and listed 64-bit Server 2025, 2022, 2019, 2016, 2012/R2 and 2008 R2 SP1 editions, plus Azure Local. ARM64 support is listed separately. Check the current list because support depends on sensor version: CrowdStrike Deployment FAQ.
- Outbound Internet or correctly configured proxy access to the tenant’s CrowdStrike cloud, DNS and TLS connectivity.
- Permission to run an executable and create services, drivers, files and registry entries.
- A change and rollback plan for production servers and golden images.
Windows Home, embedded systems, ARM devices, Server Core and domain controllers can have separate requirements or feature limits. CrowdStrike says identity-protection functionality requires domain controllers to run a 64-bit server operating system.
Existing endpoint security
CrowdStrike’s trial guidance recommends removing or disabling other endpoint-security products for optimal trial operation: trial guidance. Do not treat that as a universal production rule. Defender mode and coexistence should follow your security architecture and policy.

Download the correct Windows sensor
- Sign in to the organization’s Falcon console.
- Open the tenant’s host-management or sensor-download area.
- Select the Windows sensor package matching the target release and architecture.
- Copy the CID if the package requests it, and retrieve the installation or provisioning token if enforced.
- Transfer the installer securely to the endpoint.
Do not obtain a random WindowsSensor.exe from a third-party site. Names vary by cloud; CrowdStrike’s repair guide gives examples such as WindowsSensor.exe (US-1), WindowsSensor.MaverickGyr.exe (US-2), WindowsSensor.LionLanner.exe (EU-1) and WindowsSensor.GovLaggar.exe (GOV-1). Treat these as examples, not permanent filenames: repair guide.
Install interactively on one Windows device
- Copy the installer to a local folder on the computer.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Accept the displayed license and privacy terms.
- Enter the CID, installation token or provisioning token requested by this sensor and tenant.
- Select Install and allow setup to finish.
- Wait for cloud provisioning, then verify the host in Falcon.
Field names differ between Falcon offerings and sensor generations. CrowdStrike’s customer guide documents the CID-copy and paste workflow, while its installation video shows setup and console verification: customer installation guide and installation video.
Verify enrollment, not just installation
In Falcon host management
- The expected hostname appears in the correct tenant.
- Operating system and sensor version are correct.
- Last-seen/check-in time is recent.
- The expected sensor-update policy, group and tags are applied.
- You are not confusing an old or duplicate host record with the new device.
On the endpoint
- The Falcon service is present and running using your approved Windows administration method.
- The installed version matches the rollout target.
- Installation logs contain no unresolved error.
- Firewall and proxy rules permit required CrowdStrike connections.
- No other security product has blocked or isolated the sensor.
Do not use live malware merely to test enrollment. Use console status, built-in test detections or an approved isolated validation procedure. CrowdStrike’s trial workflow describes viewing test detections: trial materials.
Deploy with CrowdStrike’s PowerShell script
The official script uses Falcon APIs to select the version assigned by a Windows Sensor Update Policy, download it and install it locally. Run it in an elevated PowerShell session.

Its default provisioning wait is 1,200 seconds (20 minutes); the documented log location is the Windows system temporary area, shown as WindowsTempInstallFalcon.log. Protect client secrets, access tokens, provisioning tokens and maintenance tokens. Do not place them in source control, screenshots, tickets or reusable command history; use your deployment platform’s secret store.
Scale deployment safely
Microsoft Intune
- Package the tenant-approved installer as a Win32 application.
- Use the silent command supplied by the current Falcon console instructions; do not assume one universal
/quietsyntax. - Run in system context and create detection logic for the approved service, file or registry state.
- Assign a pilot ring before production, and configure retries and exit-code handling.
- Keep reusable tokens and secrets out of the package.
SCCM/MECM and Group Policy
Use the current tenant installer and parameters in SCCM/MECM. CrowdStrike’s repair guide specifically discusses automated SCCM repair. A Group Policy startup script should account for network availability, Local System execution, idempotence, central logging, token protection and reboot policy.

Ansible
CrowdStrike’s Ansible collection provides a falcon_install role with Windows variables for CID, install arguments, retries, retry delay, temporary directory, elevation and SYSTEM execution. Documented defaults include 10 retries, a 120-second delay and /norestart: Ansible installation role.

Troubleshoot common failures
Installer succeeds but no host appears
- Confirm the installer came from the intended tenant and cloud.
- Recheck the CID and installation/provisioning token.
- Test proxy, DNS, firewall and outbound TLS access.
- Allow the documented provisioning period to elapse.
- Search host management by hostname, serial number and IP.
- Review the local installation log before attempting another install.
Access denied or immediate failure
Elevation, application control, endpoint-security blocking or an inaccessible network share are common causes. Run from an elevated shell using a locally stored installer. CrowdStrike explicitly requires administrator rights for the PowerShell script: script documentation.
Provisioning timeout
Investigate Internet access, proxy settings, TLS inspection, DNS, cloud selection, expired tokens and filtering. The PowerShell script supports proxy parameters and a configurable provisioning wait.

Unsupported or conflicting system
Recheck the live compatibility list, edition and architecture. For another antivirus, follow the approved coexistence design; trial guidance is not a blanket production mandate.

Use the installer that matches the tenant cloud and an authorized maintenance token. CrowdStrike’s documented silent pattern is:
C:Temp<installation_file.exe> MAINTENANCE_TOKEN=<maintenance_token> /repair /silent /forcedowngrade /norestart/forcedowngrade is repair-specific and should not be added casually to an ordinary installation. Uninstall only with authorization
Sensor removal is normally protected. In Falcon, open host management and setup, then sensor downloads and tool downloads; obtain the relevant operating-system tool and the target host’s maintenance token. CrowdStrike’s trial guide documents this workflow: free-trial guide.

Removing software from Windows is separate from deleting or hiding its Falcon host record; CrowdStrike recommends host-retention policies instead of automatic deletion by deployment automation.
Operational cautions
- Pilot on representative hardware and server roles before broad assignment.
- Record sensor version, tenant, policy, cloud region and deployment parameters.
- Do not clone a machine after it has been improperly registered; follow CrowdStrike’s image-preparation guidance.
- CrowdStrike describes routine updates as requiring no reboot, but a particular install, repair, Windows policy or competing driver may behave differently. Follow the installer result and your change policy.
- Falcon is a commercial platform. CrowdStrike advertises Falcon Go, Pro and Enterprise, while trial availability and device limits can change; see pricing and trial options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Falcon be installed without a Falcon account?
No. The sensor must be associated with an authorized Falcon tenant, trial or customer environment so it can obtain the correct package and enrollment credentials.
How long does registration take?
The installer can finish before cloud enrollment. Allow the tenant’s provisioning period, then check Falcon host management for a recent last-seen time.

Does installing Falcon always require a reboot?
Not necessarily. CrowdStrike describes routine updates as requiring no reboot, but the specific installer, repair operation, Windows policy or competing driver can produce different behavior.

It can depend on Defender mode, the Falcon bundle and your security architecture. Use the organization’s approved coexistence configuration rather than disabling Defender automatically.
