Steam is free to install. Download it from Valve’s official Steam page, then run the installer for your computer: Windows users open the downloaded installer, Mac users move Steam into Applications, and Ubuntu users can install Valve’s official .deb package. Sign in or create an account after setup. Steam is already integrated into SteamOS on Steam Deck, so Deck owners normally do not install the desktop client separately.
The Steam client is Valve’s storefront, game launcher, update service, and community platform. Installing the client costs nothing, but games and other content may cost money. Installing Steam does not install a game automatically, and a game’s availability and performance depend on its operating-system support and system requirements.
For safety, start at store.steampowered.com/about and select Install Steam. Avoid third-party download sites, ads, unofficial mirrors, and modified installers. Use the platform-specific download offered by Valve rather than relying on an installer filename, which may change.

- A Windows PC, Mac, or supported Linux computer.
- Internet access to download and update Steam and, later, to download most games.
- Permission to install applications on the computer. On a managed work or school device, an administrator may need to allow it.
- Free storage for the client and substantially more for games. Game sizes vary; check each game’s store page.
- A Steam account to sign in, or an email address to create one. You do not need to buy a game just to install the client.
Keeping the operating system and graphics drivers current can help with games, but it does not guarantee that every Steam game will run. Check the individual game’s listed platform support and requirements before downloading it.

Install Steam on Windows
- Open Valve’s Steam download page and select Install Steam.
- Download the Windows installer, then open it from your browser’s downloads list or the folder where it was saved.
- If Windows displays a security or User Account Control prompt, verify that you downloaded the installer from Valve’s official page before approving it.
- Follow the setup wizard: choose a language, select an installation location or accept the suggested one, and select Install.
- When setup finishes, launch Steam. Sign in to an existing account or choose the account-creation option and follow the prompts.
- Let Steam download any client updates. When the Store and Library pages load, installation is complete.
If you cannot install to the suggested location, you may be able to choose another folder where your account has permission. Otherwise, ask the device administrator rather than trying to bypass the restriction.
Install Steam on macOS
- Visit the official Steam page and select Install Steam to get the Mac download.
- Open the downloaded disk image. If the installer presents the Steam app and an Applications folder, drag Steam into Applications.
- Open Steam from Applications or Launchpad. If macOS presents a security prompt, proceed only after confirming the download came from Valve’s official site.
- Sign in or create an account, then let the client update.
Mac support is game-specific. Some titles on Steam support Windows but not macOS, and Intel and Apple silicon Macs can have different compatibility behavior. Check the game’s store page rather than assuming that a Mac can run every Steam title.
Install Steam on Linux
Valve’s clearest documented desktop installation route is for Ubuntu or Ubuntu LTS, using its official .deb package. Visit the Steam download page and download the Linux package. Valve’s Linux instructions describe the package as steam_latest.deb; package names or download details can change.
Graphical installation on Ubuntu
- Open the downloaded
.debfile. - Allow Ubuntu Software Center to install it and complete any prompts.
- Launch Steam from the application menu, allow it to update, and sign in or create an account.
Terminal installation with gdebi
If the downloaded file is in your Downloads folder, Valve documents using gdebi this way:

sudo apt install gdebi-core
gdebi steam_latest.debRun the final command from the directory containing the package, or provide its full path. The system may prompt for your password or confirmation to install dependencies.
Valve’s Steam for Linux README lists Ubuntu or Ubuntu LTS with a 64-bit kernel as the supported baseline. Its listed client prerequisites include an x86-64/AMD64 processor supporting CMPXCHG16B and SSE3, at least 512 MB RAM, 5 GB available storage, an internet connection for initial installation, 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers and glibc, and glibc 2.31 or newer from August 15, 2025 onward. These Linux client requirements are not Windows or Mac requirements, and the 5 GB figure is not a recommendation for a game library.
Other Linux distributions may offer Steam through their own package managers or packaging formats; instructions and support can differ. Do not assume that the Ubuntu package is the right choice for every distribution. If you use SteamVR on Linux, Valve specifically recommends the native Ubuntu .deb package because unsupported Snap or Flatpak packages can interfere with VR features; that advice is about SteamVR in particular.
Sign in and install a game
- Open Steam and sign in. If you are new, select the account-creation option and complete the account setup and email verification prompts.
- Select Store and search for a game.
- On its store page, check whether it supports your operating system and review its system requirements. For Linux, compatibility may depend on Proton; on Steam Deck, check the game’s Deck rating.
- Purchase or claim the game if needed, then select Install.
- Choose a library location, confirm, and wait for Steam to download and install the files.
- Open the game from your Library and select Play.
The default library location is usually simplest. If the system drive is nearly full, a secondary internal drive may be useful. External drives can work, but connection reliability, power, filesystem, and performance can affect the experience. Do not unplug a drive while Steam is downloading or writing game files. Steam installations can also involve substantial CPU and disk work, so displayed network speed may fall while files are being unpacked or installed; there is no single reliable installation time.

What if you have a Steam Deck?
Steam is normally already installed on Steam Deck as part of SteamOS. You do not need to install the Windows, Mac, or Ubuntu desktop client. If SteamOS is damaged or has been replaced, use Valve’s SteamOS recovery instructions, not the ordinary desktop installer. Recovery choices such as factory reset, erasing user data, rollback, and re-imaging are different; some can erase local data. Read the selected option carefully and back up important files or saves where possible.
Deck game compatibility is title-specific. Valve’s Deck Verified program uses four labels: Verified (works well out of the box), Playable (may need manual adjustments), Unsupported (currently not functional on Deck), and Unknown (not yet reviewed). Ratings can change. The Steam Deck supports microSD cards and formats them for use; card write speed can affect installation time.

The download is the wrong file or came from an unfamiliar site
Do not run it. Return to Valve’s official download page and select the installer for your operating system. Delete a suspicious or incorrect download. A supposed Steam installer that promises cracked games or bypassed sign-in is not a legitimate alternative.
The installer will not open or finish
- Confirm that the download completed, then download it again from Valve.
- Restart the computer and retry.
- Check that there is enough free space and that your account is allowed to install applications.
- Check operating-system compatibility and whether security software is blocking the installer. Verify its source before allowing it; do not disable protection permanently or indiscriminately.
If it still fails, use Steam Support rather than downloading repair utilities from an unknown site.

Steam installs but will not update or connect
Check your internet connection, available disk space, and whether a firewall, proxy, or managed network is blocking Steam. University networks and proxies can block ports Steam needs. Valve’s network troubleshooting guidance covers these restrictions; on a school or work network, ask its administrator instead of randomly changing network settings. Restart Steam and the computer after checking these basics.
Steam is stuck installing or updating
Check for disk activity in Task Manager on Windows or Activity Monitor on Mac. If the drive is actively working, give Steam time; installations can be CPU- and disk-intensive. Also check free space and, if using a separate library drive, confirm it is connected and writable. Restart Steam or the computer if progress remains stalled. Avoid interrupting Steam while it is actively writing files unless it is clearly frozen.
A game will not launch
A working Steam client does not guarantee that a particular game will run. Confirm its operating-system support and requirements, update the operating system and graphics drivers, and use Steam’s game-file verification option if appropriate. Valve’s launch troubleshooting guide also recommends checking for conflicting software. Linux users should distinguish a client dependency problem from a game or Proton compatibility issue.
Linux reports missing dependencies or graphics-driver errors
Check that the distribution and version are supported, that the system is 64-bit, and that both 64-bit and 32-bit graphics drivers and the required glibc are available. Older Ubuntu releases may cease to work with later Steam client requirements. Follow the distribution’s documented package and driver instructions rather than mixing packages from unrelated sources.
